nbc's jacob soboroff was one of the first reporters granted access and joins us now from brownsville, texas with your first look inside. jacob, good evening. >> reporter: good evening to you, lester. i have to tell you it was a shocking and frankly overwhelming experience to go inside this former walmart called the casa padre shelter. it is more like a jail or a prison inside because these kids are incarcerated 22 hours a day they're inside, they get to go outside for only two hours. we were not allowed to bring our cameras inside this facility but we were provided with handout video from the department of health and human services. these kids are controlled by the government 24 hours a day. everything that they do in there is an increasing number of them inside this facility that have been separated from their parents at the southern border as a result of that trump administration policy. one official when we went inside asked us literally to smile at the children because they feel like they are animals locked up in gauges. those are the words she used. there are no cages. there are

itexas, whereldren separated from their parents are being held in mass detention centers, our jacob soboroff is one of the few reporters allowed inside one and he's outside the largest in the nation in texas tonight. how are these children tracked once they're inside these facilities? >> reporter: lester, the trump administration has told us that these separations are temporary, but it turns out, this administration may be creating a significant group of orphaned immigrants. we talked last night about that tear sheet, the piece of paper parents get when they leave this facility. a former i.c.e. official tells nbc news that the trump administration could create permanent separations while children are kept in this facility and parents are deported to their home countries. they don't know when or if they will ever see those children again. >> i know you've been making efforts to get inside one of the girls' facilities to look at conditions there. where do you stand on that? >> reporter: we've asked time and again that we'd like to see not only the girls, but the toddlers, where are they in the

i'm here with jacob soboroff. you have been sort of on the trail of finding where girls are being held. the initial facilities that you were able to get into, the biggest one in that brownsville in the walmart that has been decommissioned. what do we know about where girls are being held. >> not much. we know what came in and out an "associated press" report last night that there are three shellers here in the south texas area. the only other thing we know is there are 100 shelters that hhs operates around the country in 17 states. we don't know which ones of those are housing tender age children, little kids, babies, infants, toddlers. and we don't know where the girls are. we haven't been given photos of them. i asked for photos before weern able to get in to tour the shelters of where the girls are. i talked to a high level hhs officials who offered me photos from 2016, when president obama was president and before this policy was put into place. and we said no thank you. we are continuing to ask because there

but that's according to msnbc's jacob soboroff. the bottom line, david, many of these 2,000 children or so, they're still in custody right now are in limbo. as you mentioned there are more protests planned today. we were near here in mccallen where buses came in to protest outside of that ursula processing facility. there was some tense moments where they stopped a bus full of migrants coming out of the facility. certainly a lot of outrage building here but in the dhs statement the government is insisting that it knows where all the children in its custody are and it's working to reunite them with the families at that point. but many people have a lot of questions about how exactly that will happen. >> i appreciate it. tornillo, texas, northwest of hidalgo, cal perry is there. we're hearing from gabe about the protests in broad strokes. what can we expect where you're at today? >> we have seen small ones and we have seen members of congress trying to get into the compound behind me. you can see the celebrities coming out to raise t

and nbc's jacob soboroff who toured one of those detention centers earlier this week.ia, news coming in just now that so far the government has separate 2d,000 kids from their parents? >> yes. that's right. 2,000. that's just in six weeks, going back to just before this zero tolerance policy started. that's when they started to take anybody coming over the border illegally -- that means not turning themself in at a port of entry -- and taking them away from prosecution and separating them from their children. to put that in context, if we look at the past six months from october to may before that, there were just over 1,000 separations over six months. now we're seeing double that in six weeks. and even that six months was higher than you would have seen under the obama administration. so this is clearly part of their plan to try to keep family units from crossing the border together. as we know, that was a population that was becoming more increased in their numbers because they were claiming asylum. these were families fleeing violence in central american countries

nbc's jacob soboroff has more from one of the facilities housing children split from their parents. jacob, good morning. >> reporter: phillip, the this is the epicenter. this is the mcallen bor majority of the separation s are occurring. 1100 separations directly by the trump administration. we went inside there. we were the first group of journalists to get eyes on actually what is happening in there and despite all the rhetoric there's no cages, that the conditions are good, there are cages in there and there are young kids sitting in them and only an increasing number of young child migrants are being separate in that facility from their parents. and again, this is creating a massive stress not only on the children, but on the border patrol staff and the facilities in there as well. it just wasn't prepared for this policy to be put into place, including the social workers. so as these separations increase, the crisis will get worse. the manpower and the lack of it in this facility is going to create more problems that we haven't yet anticipated. we are only getting ramped up here.

this is where jacob soboroff has been. he was one of the first journalists invited to take look inside the facility. he joins us now. gadi, i think you have been listening to some of this conversation -- jacob, you have been listening to some of the conversation with gadi, who is with us, and irwin. i want to get your take on this. again, the cleanliness, the orderliness, the way in which they have built out the dorms, the fact this they have play time, food and they have got counsellors, somehow belies an underlying problem with the fact that we are warehousing children who are separate from their parents. >> yeah, and frankly it's not really the issue. as we talked about yesterday, you could separate these kids and send them to a five-star hotels. but trauma is what they are talking about here. they could be in the nicest facility in the world yet they are being separated forcibly from their parents something that hasn't been done systematically before by the u.s. government: the reality is, yes, there have been hhs facil

i want to go first to my colleague and partner, jacob soboroff. jacob, you have been here for the last week. i know you know a bit more about these tender age shelters. doctors have weighed in on this. people have been inside. walk us through it. >> so, in that detention center we've been standing out of the last few days, it's just gutting, gutting to watch these children sitting in the cages. what we've now found out, the children will go from that detention center the largest processing center where 1100 kids have been separated from their families. they are specifically designed what they call tender age kids. a little babysitting on the floor with social care workers wearing scrubs on their feet like they're in a hospital. and the only reason that child was in there is because they were separated from their parents as a direct result of this policy. it's just sickening to wrap your head around. when i was in that facility, you look at babies all standing together, sitting together, some of them not even standing up. >> you have a 2-year-old --
