nbc's jacob ward is in northern california on this jacob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis the caldor fire started over the weekend and has grown exponentially and has grown in ways cal fire has called unprecedented. it exploded, doubling in size. >> this area is extremely hard for us to get into. >> reporter: in california, 31,000 residents are under evacuation orders. two civilians were injured in the fire, which remains entirely uncontained. >> we are seeing generational destruction of forests because of what these fires are doing. this is going to take a long time to come back from. >> reporter: gusty winds and dry drought conditions creating a dangerous situation, destroying numerous homes and property. this classroom used to belong to the elementary school students here in this small town. it's a reminder that wildfires don't just touch down in remote areas. increasingly, they are sweeping through our lives. residents, racing to get out and making their way to safety. >> it's just very -- it's sad what's happening. >> it's hurting my heart right now because as i'm dri

joining me from fremont is correspondent jacob ward. jacob, good to have you with us. the reaction there to what we've all been watching unravel over the past few days and i'm sure a lot of families are still extended families are still in afghanistan and extremely worried about that. >> aymon, that's right. we've been standing with the smell of delicious bread coming from the market behind me where they bake three-foot lengths of nan all morning and people throughout afghan society have come to this place. we spoke to many, people who survived 50 years of conflict, in some cases being from four different generations who survived soviet times, the warlords, as they called them, the taliban and you know watching this happen again, they all say revived nightmares they thought they could put behind them. we spoke to the very first elected official who is an afghan woman in the united states to ask her what is it that all of this feels like, what's coming next and emotionally what's it like for her. have a listen. >> i think the biggest concern is that it's going to be a d

nbc's jacob ward is in fremont california's little kabul neighborhood. good to see both of you.many people her age, frankly, they didn't live, you know, in a time when they couldn't go to a hair salon or play an instrument or get an education. now the taliban is saying, in fact just said minutes ago at its press conference that it wants women to serve in government. are they buying it? >> yeah, it's an interesting question, chris, because you and i might remember the taliban more than a lot of the young people do. i have been speaking with young afghans in kabul in their 20s almost all day long. one said, and he didn't mean to say it this way, and he said this is my first taliban, so for him this is new. he's in his 20s. he doesn't necessarily know -- he has not experienced firsthand but he has heard all of the stories, but a lot of the young people are open to the taliban might not exact the vengeance their older family members would, and we saw many desperate to get out but they are willing to hear the taliban out, and this young woman i spoke with, she's facing a double threa

i want to go to jacob ward in san francisco. how is it going.st it. with 70% of americans having at least one shot, you could say an overwhelming majority of americans want to be in places where everyone else is safe and vaccinated. >> that's right, stephanie. as dawn breaks in san francisco, we're in the mission district. one of the places people go out to drink. san francisco has one of the largest densities of bars per capita, 3,000 bars in a city of less than a million people. you have really no better person to ask about human behavior, decisions we make, than a bartender. we spoke to the head of the new alliance that has sprung up in which 300 bar owners have come together and said you have to have a vaccine card or a negative test result to show us at the door in order to drink inside. listen to what he had to say about why they took this action. >> what really stood out from conversations is how much frustration and anger there was in the group with numb nuts not getting vaccines by choice. in the face of incredible amount of data, in th
