and south africa's president, jacob zuma, says colonel qaddafi ready for a truce. let's get more on our top story. the state senator of south australia is calling on his country's football federation to try to recover money spent on the 2022 bid and for the bid to be reopened. he joins me on the line now. thank you very much for joining us on bbc news. how will you go about recalling the money? >> well, this is something -- australia spent $46 million on the bid. at that stage, we were aware of allegations made in the house of commons, parliamentary committee, in terms of lord trison's allegations of corruption in regards to the bid. we now have further information that's come to light where the secretary general of fifa expressed concerns about the bid, as well. i think australia is entitled to ask for its money back as should other countries and i also think that the 2022 bid ought to be reopened given the serious allegations made. >> forgive me, though, i'm wondering how you would go about betting hold of that money given that we're in a situation where an inves

jacob zuma will be looking to find a zig fied way, we're being told for moammar gadhafi to step asidelly a lot of the conversation that's being had here in tripoli. even amongst some of those within the inner circle is how can the leader step aside or step down or be found an alternate role that will allow him to save face. but still be in keeping with what the rebels want for there to be a cease-fire negotiation moving forward. zain? >> how long can gadhafi even hold out under all this bombardment? >> at the moment the sense is that the biggest threat to the libyan authority's ability to stay in power and to hold tripoli, is this issue of fuel. the sanctions are hitting fuel ships coming in. which probably sounds slightly strange. we all know that libya is a massive fuel producer. but what they do produce, because it's very high quality they refine for jet fuel, for the more expensive types of fuel. the cheaper fuel, benzene, petrol fuel, they actually import. that's what's hitting tripoli very hard. we're seeing petrol queues, but three lines deep. people telling us they're spending

more on zuma's libya trip, the question is, what kind of influence could jacob zuma bring to this in terms of the african union when mr. gadhafi is often seen as the man who has, i guess, given a lot of donations to the african -- countries of the african union? what kind of unbiased position could the au really have? >> mr. gadhafi still remains a very powerful figure on this continent. as you said, he's bankrolled many of the governments here on the african continent. and, actually, mr. zuma's party, the african national congress has received a lot of support from mr. gadhafi in the past when they were fighting against apartheid in south africa they received support. mr. zuma personally has a relationship with mr. gadhafi. you remember in 2006 when he was facing controversial rape charges, he was of course acquitted of those charges, he turned to moammar gadhafi. it's going to be very interesting to see what mr. zuma achieves in libya. of course, many of those watching including the african union are hoping these long-term links between mr. zuma's party and gadhafi will end up with

jacob zumas is planning to go to tripoli next month. mr. will meet with moammar gadhafi on monday. we have the details. >> reporter: it will be interesting to see what, if anything, the president of south africa, jacob zuma will be able to achieve in libya on monday. he was there in april and many argue he achieved absolutely nothing. now a lot has changed. the first thing is that moammar gadhafi now has an icc arrest warrant hanging over his head. so if the african union that mr. zuma will be representing during these talks with moammar gadhafi wants to negotiate some kind of exit strategy, it's going to be very, very difficult and very limited. gadhafi will want to know if he will be protected from prosecution and i don't think any of the african countries, 31 of them, who are signaturet tci signatory signatories. moammar gadhafi is kudz by the south african government of lying to them when they inquired about the whereabouts of photo journalists anton hamill. hamill disappeared in april and now the south african government has been told

one more question about jacob zuma. that he would bring up the missing south african photographer missing in libya. did he do that? >> reporter: this is something that the south african stress press has been calling for. it has been an unfortunate situation. his family released a statement saying that those journalists with him when he was killed, what we were hearing here on the ground is that they were saying to us that we have never seen him, he was never in any kind of libyan detention but his family had been told that he had been taken away safely until they spoke to those journalists. so from the south african side, there was a lot of upset that zuma was coming here to even negotiate with colonel gadhafi any way. there was a real cooling of relations between the two countries which i'm sure hampered the ability to offer gadhafi a soft landing, brooke. >> i see. perhaps that's one of the reasons that there is not quite an announcement yet. we don't know. but perhaps. live in tripoli, nima, thank you. >>> here, hund

today the embattled libyan leader met in tripoli with the south african president jacob zuma, who saidre. but neither man said anything about gadhafi stepping down, which of course is the main demand of the opposition. and zuma has not called on him to quit. the fact remains that more than three months after rebels rose up against him gadhafi is still holding on to power and it appears by any means necessary. soldiers who have deserted to the opposition allege that gadhafi's forces are using rape as a weapon of war. senior international correspondent nic robertson spoke to some of those men. >> reporter: in this makeshift rebel jail this gadhafi army deserter tells us what he saw before he fled his post. "i saw cell phone video of several soldiers raping two schoolgirls, 15 and 17 years old, over six days in tripoli," he says.
