change or corral hari sreenivasan spoke to the mission leader, fabien cousteau, grandson of jacques cousteau. >> welcome to the bottom of the sea, aquarius is the world's only undersea marine laboratory. why are we doing this? simply because it gives us the luxury of time. we're able to go into this final frontier on our living planet to explore unadulterated and unlimited by time, which is not something one can say when diving down from a boat. >> sreenivasan: tell us a little bit about what it is that you're doing when you're out there six to eight hours a day. >> well, we have a wet lab, which you have in that photo right there, and also a dry lab inside the habitat. what we're looking at are issues with climate change, or more specifically related to climate change and acidification levels as well as pollution. so, we're looking at the baseline of the underwater cities that basically dictates everything that lives in and around these coral cities. >> sreenivasan: is there anything cool that you've seen since you've been down there? >> it's just amazing. we've seen so much new behavior th

last month we interviewed jacques cousteau's grandson fabian. his expedition honored his grandfather's 50th anniversary. we are pleased to welcome fabian cousteau back, great to see you. how did it feel coming back out of the water, what's the transition been like? >> it's been a very bittersweet moment to pierce that veneer back on land. being down for 31 days was an overstimulating amazing time. and then getting back to the surface, being elated to come and see our friends and family was one thing. but then there was also a lack of stimulus. getting back into air, it was empty. there was no sound. there were just humans waiting for us and no fish. >> so there's that much more going around underwater? >> well ah conveyor -- aquarius has stayed down for almost 20 years. it is a fireworks display of life and it is wholly protected in that area. so it's the way the oceans should be. and you know, it was like a kid in a candy store. >> sounds fascinating. how was the transition physically though being cupped up in this -- cupped u cooped us laborato

fabien cousteau is the grandson of jacques cousteau.ot to dive down in the keys to visit fabien herself. what was that experience like for you? >> let me tell you, you know it's going to be an adventure any time there is a cousteau involved. but this is definitely my only report done underwater. so cool to be diving underwater to talk to fabien about the mission. this is the only underwater marine habitat which is whereas stroe knots all over the world train for premission training. >> super cool. >> we had super high seas. we had awesome navy escorts that took us out. it was about an hour and i fell like we were going to narnia in the middle of the ocean and there were string rays passing by and then you meet fabien in this habitat. incredible experience. >> i know you can only stay down there for so long. i did this google hangout with fabien not too long ago and at one point they lost air conditioning. here you have scientists huddling together and then female scientists came down from m.i.t. they were sort of nervous of -- it's a sm

that's what jacques cousteau's grandson did.periment. >> he lived underwater in this marine lab, about the size of a school bus, pretty decked out underwater school bus. hot water, air-conditioning, and internet access, still, you're underwater. i mean, you're still underwater. joining us to talk about this experience, the man himself, up for air, good, clean outdoor air. >> he didn't grow gills i said. >> good to see you both. it's almost like living in new york city, except that your neighbors are fish. >> i suppose there wasn't a lot of fish on the menu. all jokes aside, this was a big deal, you wanted to bring awareness to conservation. did you feel like you were able to succeed? >> i think we had goals of reaching 331 million people, and as of the metrics of june 159, at least as far as suppress concerned, we've reached over 500 million people. on that level, it was a success and hopefully on the science it will be, we did three years of science and data collection in just 31 days. >> amazing. >> what supervised you about b
