meteorologist jacqui jeras is leading the way. jacqui, what's going on? >> reports on the southwest side of wichita of power flashes. so that tells us that tornado is moving into the city, into the southwest part into the suburbs, going towards downtown. this is a tornado emergency. we know this tornado has been as much as between a quarter of a mile and half of a mile wide. so this is an emergency where you have to be in shelter, in your safe place right now. there's been heavy rain the last 20 to 30 minutes across wichita. the tornado itself somewhere in this area right here. if i switch this over to velocity mode, i'll have a better idea. we're talking in this area, it's getting close to the national weather service. here's wichita in the downtown area. there you can see the storm moving through. notice this just turn to that bright orange. that's some of that debris. so this is just outside of the national weather service office, which they have evacuated by the way. that has a storm shelter in the basement. we're tracking storm chasers. there are doz

jacqui jeras is watching this as well. we saw a huge funnel cloud on the ground. >> this is a large, violent tornado. this is what it looked like three minutes ago. we are tracking this live. sometimes we get spotty interception from storm chasers as they're live streaming. this tornado was reported first near genessee oh, near little river, and now it is near langley, if you know that area. elf worth, and saline county. violent tornado being tracked and moving quickly to the north and east around 45 miles per hour. this is pretty rural at this point. we haven't heard any reports of damage yellow light. we're going to continue to track this. one of my big concerns is this is moving towards salina. they are not in the warning as we speak, but it is heading your way, you need to be on big time alert for this storm. let's show you the storm chaser network. this is what that tornado wedge, we call it a wedge when you don't see a point on the bottom of the tornado. people say what does that mean. it means it is large and causin

so we still have some time. >> jacqui, we have to get to a break. we'll continue on the other side of the break. there are reports of a hospital hit by a possible tornado in iowa. back in two minutes. >>> welcome back, everyone. we're following breaking news on cnn. the left side of your screen, you're looking at radar from wichita, kansas. this is a tornado emergency and if you look on the right side of your screen, salina, kansas, that's what was on the ground today. we're following this, been following it all day on cnn. this warning for this tornado outbreak came more than 24 hours in advance because of new warning systems. and also tonight in creston, iowa, there are reports of a tornado. what's believed to be a tornado hitting a hospital. jacqui jeras is our meteorologist and is following all this for us. what do we know about this hospital in iowa? >> still not a lot because communication is out in a lot of areas and power is out. we have a radar picture to show you. this was a couple of hours ago in southwestern parts of the state. we know t

jacqui jeras, "sunday night mysteries."reminiscent of the movie "2001" space odyssey, they found something weird on mars. i don't know. would it be weird? tell us about it. >> that's a monolith. that's what you're looking at. in the movie, apparently the aliens had put a monolith on earth and the moon. could there be a monolith on mars? >> what's a monolith. >> it's a stone. how could something so perfect be standing out so perfectly all alone out by itself on this planet. could it be naturally caused or did somebody put it there? the masonry of martians. could it be? that's what some people are saying. these are actualitily images taken from the mars reconnaissance orbiter. they were a couple of years ago taken. so the buzz on the internet gets regenerated every now and then. so we had to debunk this myth. i hate to disappoint you. it's probably not the work of martians or alien life. it's probably just a rock. and there are a couple of reasons we think that is. first of all, see the shadow in the picture? >> yes. >> that

and jacqui jeras is tracking this for us. jacq jacqui, there's no time for people to drop their guard. how's this shaping up right now? >> today won't be exactly the same kind of day as yesterday. we won't see quite as many tornados, but there's still quite a risk, especially across parts of the upper midwest. at this hour, we already have a tornado watch in place. that means conditions are favorable for conditions to develop. it's this line we're watching along the cold front, across parts of central missouri and then into northwestern parts of arkansas. for the most part, we've seen some wind damage here, with winds in excess of 60 miles per hour, but within this line, we could see some rotation and that will be a concern. now, the next area that we're going to be watching for this potential is up here in the upper midwest. believe it or not, yeah, that's snow you're seeing way over there in western parts of south dakota. that gives you an example of just how different these air masses are. so much colder behind the system,

jacqui jeras is tracking this for us. tell us the latest. >> we think the next couple of hours, the atmosphere is really going to explode across the upper midwest. at this hour, we're focusing in on parts of arkansas, and into missouri. we've got a strong cold front that's pushing through here, igniting thunderstorms. some of these have been severe, with some hail and some damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. no rotation with these storms just yet, but we could see some smaller scale tornadoes that develop down here. now, the bigger tornadoes we think will be developing in the next couple of areas. and this is the area in here that we're going to be watching for things to develop, and then head on up towards the north and into the east and parts of wisconsin. we already have one tornado warning right on the state line there, between nebraska and south dakota. it was producing a funnel cloud earlier, but this is in a very rural area, and no damage has been reported. so we think a tornado watch will likely be issu

cnn meteorologist jacqui jeras now in the cnn weather center. gosh, jacqui, the hail with this storm also causing a lot of damage, right? >> it was amazing. take a look at the pictures we have for you, wialison. this is out of o'fallon, illinois. reports of softball to baseball-sized hail. knocked out windows and windshields on cars. this is from kathy bollington in louisville, kentucky. louisville had very large hail, golf ball to baseball-sized hail reported in that area as well. there were about 220 severe hail reports, all across the midwest. and when we say severe hail, we're generally talking about 1-inch in diameter or more, and that's about the size of the quarter. when we're talking about tennis ball-sized hail, baseball-sized hail, that's almost 3 inches across. that can do a lot of damage. when that's coming down at you at about 150 miles per hour from tens of thousands of feet above, that can cause a lot of damage and certainly injure you, and why you need to stay inside when there's a severe thunderstorm warning. because hail can be

they're amazing pictures, jacqui jeras has those pictures.eat when they send us pictures and video. >> it's amazing. let's roll it and we'll talk about that. this is from benjamin, and he was in burdette, kansas, actually shooting over the state line in oklahoma. this is the same woodward storm we were talking about, that unfortunately was fatal. and at the time that benjamin was shooting this, look at that. we call that a stovepipe tornado. certainly capable of causing a fair amount of damage at the time that he shot this. it happened to be in a hurl area. he felt fortunate as it crossed over into kansas. i've got to put on my mom hat for a second. we love your ireports. we appreciate them. and we value them. but we value your life more than we value your picture. so we want you to be careful and play storm chaser out there, and make sure you're in a safe place when you're doing things like that. or wait until the storm is over and shoot it after. >> jacqui, thank you very much. we appreciate that. >> sure. >>> the president of the united st

jacqui jeras, we've been following it here since last night. it was our breaking news all day.do we need to be on the lookout for? what's the latest? >> well, today day three of that event and we'll have day four tomorrow but the good news is the threat is really diminishing tonight. look at this. just a sliver of our tornado watches left from wisconsin stretching down into parts of arkansas. so, as you go to bed tonight, things are going to be looking better. just a slight risk then from the u.p. of michigan stretching down towards the gulf coast, and i think our best chance of severe weather then will fire up once again for tomorrow as our storm system heads eastward and temperatures warm up throughout the day and this is the risk area here in the eastern great lakes. it includes you in buffalo and includes you over towards cleveland and into pittsburgh, pennsylvania, and the risk that we're talking about more likely to see wind damage. i think the tornadoes are going to be few and far between, and one other note is that we have non-thunderstorm wind gusts that have just been

jacqui jeras in the weather center. it looks windy where rob is, but adding to his list of what people look out for, what are the indicators? bad weather on the way? >> it is, so here is where rob is right now. he's in hennessy, oklahoma. this is where oklahoma city is, to the south. what i want you to take a look at is what is happening out west. this is the dry line where rob was talking about and where thunderstorms are initiating. this is a couple hours away from where rob is. we think the second round is going to come in late tonight after the sun is done. that's what makes this so particularly dangerous, is that it's going to be impossible to see some of the tornadoes as they move on through. this is what we call that high risk day. storm chasers are out there all over the place, not just rob marciano, but we're watching this with a network of storm spotters. this is near dodge city, kansas, and really central parts of kansas right now is the area at greatest risk for the next two hours for rotating thunderstorms

jacqui jeras tracking the story. it looks like it started yesterday, and more than 24 hours notice, this is unusual and very dangerous. >> it is, yeah, in fact, you mentioned it yesterday saying a high risk was issued for today. that's only the second time in history that the storm prediction center has done that. we had a tornado in norman, oklahoma, yesterday. today, 11 tornadoes reported. why haven't you see video? it's been rural. little damage or populated areas getting hit and the big damage is in central kansas and stretching into central nebraska. here is what we call a high risk day. this is really a serious situation. when we talk about a pds watch for a tornado watch, which is what is happening in nebraska and kansas, it's called a particularly dangerous situation where large violent tornadoes stay on the ground and cause a lot of destruction for a long period of time. how bad will it get? well, we could have 100 tornadoes out there in the next 24 hours. but if they don't hit anything. it's not so much of

jacqui jeras is here with the details on that. rain slogged in the nation's capital.ork. >> yeah. all across the northeast really. this is a southeastern soaker yesterday. today it's transitioning up to the carolinas and mid atlantic. it's got a long way to go before we're over and done with, with this rain. that's just one aspect of this storm system. we are concerned about flooding, because this is going to be a long duration event. we're talking about flood watches in place for all of the big cities, into the northeast. we could see as much as two to four inches of rain before all is said and done in the next 48 hours. urban flooding can be expected, in addition to coastal flooding like atlantic city, new jersey, could get in on that. on the back side of this system, we're talking snow. that's right, it's april. we're talking the "s" word. we could be talking as much as a foot in a few locations. you really have to get up in the elevation for this to be impacting you. pittsburgh might get a couple of inches here. most of this is starting out as rain. it will transi
