jacqui jeras is talking about the problems. you talk about the fact they can't get boats in the water? >> the river has been in flood and over the weekend in particular with the historically high levels. so you can't get the boats in the water to help with some of this cleanup. now let's show you the area we are talking about. here is the state of montana. so this is not yellowstone national park here. this is on montana on the yellowstone river. we zoom in and show you this area. now, that river has been out of its banks and if you've ever seen a flooded river, there is also a lot of of debris in there. that is another concern. eight boats on stand-by right now. if the conditions improve, they hope to get those in there but, otherwise, using measures like trucks offshore to pump the water out of there. in addition to big absorbent damages, think of a cloth diaper, to help suck that up and move it out. the one good thing about the river being in flood is the current is moving very quickly and so when there is a fast current, th

let's go to jacqui jeras. what's it looking like? >> brutal, actually.go, you just showed, by the way, they had thunderstorms that rumbled on through and while you may think thunderstorms will provide heat relief. it's temporary. that moisture has been added into the atmosphere so the heat index will start to soar. the heat index in chicago right now 80 degrees. it's 88. that's the temperature your body feels in minneapolis. when you wake up to that wet bath, that early in the day, it's just extremely uncomfortable and down right dangerous. the best thing i can tell you, today is the last day of the heat across the upper midwest. still going to hold across the southern plain states but most eastward. we'll feel heat indisbetween 100 and 120 degrees. many suburbs of the twin cities yesterday got up to 100 to 124 degrees for a heat index. that's down right dangerous. the shaet on the move. it's heading toward the east. these advisories you see in effect, these are excessive heat watches. get ready because this stuff is on the way. we're talking about tomor

jacqui jeras is in the extreme weather center for us. good morning, jacqui. >> good morning, guys.reary start in a lot of cities across the eastern seaboard. not a lot of rain going on but a lot of cloud cover. stray away from your tv, come over and take a look at this power cam from atlanta. isn't that a cool picture? the clouds cutting off the top of the building and when you see things like that we start getting worried about getting airport delays. 74 in atlanta, showers and thunderstorms expected this afternoon. all across the southeast, heaviest along the gulf coast and we could get as much as two inches per hour. not severe here but this is where we're expecting it across the upper midwest. moderate risk through the dakotas and new england could see severe thunderstorms this afternoon as well. outside of those storms, the heat continues to be a top story in the weather department with advisories in effect across the central part of the country again. day 24 now for you for dallas, that's the fourth longest streak of 100 degree plus days and looks like we could break that rec

turning to our meteorologist jacqui jeras to show us where the intense heat will be, jacqui. >> it'sble and covers so much of country. over a dozen major metropolitan areas having heat indices that are at dangerous levels. the part of the country we're talking about stretching hundred of miles from iowa all the way down to almost the gulf coast. you start to see the bright pink area, kansas city down towards tulsa, memphis, even southern parts of illinois, those are excessive heat warnings where the heat index is feeling as much as 115 degrees at times. this is just the tip of the iceberg. this isn't just this weekend, folk. this is lasting at least into tuesday for most of you, and will last even longer than that for some folks in the central plains, like oklahoma city. your heat advisory stays into effect all the way into next saturday. unfortunately the news is not good for you folks. people are having a hard time in the heat. pictures from milwaukee, wisconsin this morning. the temperature was 85 degree. that was enough to send ten people to the hospital during the first rock and

. >>> intense heat is hitting several areas of the country right now and our meteorologist jacqui jerashere with all the details for us. >> let me tell you, a lot of the south central part of the country dealing with unbearable conditions here. here's a picture out of little rock, arkansas, the temperature is 95 degrees, but the temperature your body feels, 107. heat advisories in effect as well as an air quality alert, this advisory will stretch into early next week, this heat is really going to build the next couple of days. so use a lot of caution if you k let's show you the areas we're talking about. you can see from southern parts of nebraska all the way down into parts of louisiana and mississippi, feeling like 100, to 110 degrees and that, like i said is going to build over the next few days. look at the temperature your body is going to feel tomorrow. 110 in little rock, 106 in memphis, 104 degrees in jackson, mississippi we have also got some stormy weather to talk about. it could bring a chance of severe thunderstorms and we have been seeing a little bit of that in parts of co

jacqui jeras in the weather center. usually folks are a little concerned about tropical depressions or tropical storms on the way. and in this case, they really wanted them. >> you did. you want a weak one, one that will come in, move slowly and bring some torrential downpours. that wasn't the case. don came in as a weak tropical storm. look at that thing, it fizzled out. no longer a tropical depression anymore. it has become extra tropical and very, very minimal moisture, even left with this thing as it falls apart and moves across parts of mexico. this is the radar loop to show you, parts of southern texas got a little bit, some of the outlined showers and thundershowers brought more rainfall, more rain around houston than we did near brownsville unfortunately. maybe half of an inch or more for a few of these people. we were hoping for some kind of a -- not necessarily a drought buster. but maybe a little bit of dent would have been good. look at some of the cities and the rainfall deficits they had since january. we'

jacqui jeras in the weather center now. i have never seen that before, a house would shift because of dryness, i know definitely because of moisture, a house can shift. that's extraordinary. >> it's the same type of effect only opposite. the ground moves, i have seen pictures from our i-reporters and things just of cracks that go all the way through their lawn because the ground is shifting because things have become so dry. and we were hoping to get a little bit of relief, a lint of rain in here for what was tropical depression don, it's basically not existent, it's hard to even find it on the satellite picture as it moves through the rio valley here. it did bring some rainfall, but not nearly as much as we were hoping. this map will show you the rainfall totals in the last 24 hours, about a half of an inch. that's all you saw on the texas coast, so unfortunately doing nothing to help the drought situation here really, maybe just add a little bit more humidity to make thing a little bit more uncomfortable for you today. he

joining us now with more on the nation's heat wave is jacqui jeras.you said, it's dangerous and it's deadly. more than 30 people have died in this heat wave so far and unfortunately those numbers are probably going to continue to go up. >>> a little bit of a relief out there but not before some records are being broken. these just in from the national weather service, kennedy airport reporting a record of 102, philly at 100, as well as north little rock, arkansas, and a look at what it looks like in central park today, you'll want to stay in the shade because that's the best place to be in, try and get maybe a little bit wet from some of those found da mountains as well. that's part of the problem, this is covering many, many states, the humidity levels are extremely high, so your temperature on the thermometer doesn't have to say 100, it's the temperature that your body feels and it's feeling 105 in kansas city, 105 in memphis, and the northeast corner now in with this as well. we call this a big heat dome or an area of high pressure that's stacked u

let's check in with jacqui jeras it very dry. it is dangerous. cattle are being sold. growing. it is quite miserable. we saw earlier, homes are shifting from their foundations because of the cracked soil. >> yeah. that's a big problem. in the houston area, they have been dealing with that problem. this is the drought monitor. once a week, they will take a good look here, noaa will, at the conditions. the soil moisture, how much rainfall we had compared to where things should be and you can see the outline of the state of texas. we'll show it a little bit easier for you. and look at all of this dark brown. dark brown is extremely bad. that's an exceptional drought. we're talking nearly 75% of the state dealing with this. the entire state is dealing with at least some type of drought conditions. so it really is a very extreme situation and, you know, we have been dealing with a little tropical system there, don, which moved in late yesterday. and we were really hoping, not necessarily for a drought buster, but a little bit of relief, right? bring us a little bit of rain.

jacqui jeras in the weather center now. boy, this is like a broken record. it is so hot everywhere. really is no escaping it. >> imagine being that air conditioning repairman. inside a hot attic trying to repair a new system or install a new system. it really is brutal. this is the third weekend in a row that i've been standing here with you. we have been talking about these excessive conditions. now, it is not something to brush off like you mentioned. this is now hitting the meg lops, all the big cities in the northeast. we're talking about millions of more people that are suffering with it this beingend. lo look at the temperature, 102, 103 in new york city. washington, d.c., feels like 108 degrees. that's dangerous heat. we're in the thick of it now. you're going to be feeling around this range for next several hours. use a lot of caution. hopefully your air conditioning is working. if not, get out of there and find a safe place to be where you can cool your body down. now, we have seen a nice break in the heat here across the upper midwest. things look really hot, though, still

something tells me jacqui jeras is here to tell us not that cool days are right on the horizon. >> notch. >> more heat for a while, right? >> yeah. i mean, this is a really significant heat wave. >> it's incredible. >> parts of texas and oklahoma have already been in it for probably a good week already. they've been seeing those buckling roads and the drought conditions are just unbelievable. but the nation's midsection. this is where you normally don't see temperatures like this. like minneapolis and chicago, take a look at the heat index in those cities. unfortunately, we're talking about probably at least until the middle of the week. so this is a sustained event. this is a long event. and those overnight temperatures are going to stay very high into the upper 70s to lower 80s. so there's really no recovery time. and that's the biggest problem is that you don't ever get a chance to cool down, unfortunately. we've got what we call a big ridge in our upper level pattern. and that means it's going to kind of stay put here. we really need another big weather system to kind of push this

jacqui jeras with us now. it is an unbearableable summer. >> down right deadly. have died in the midwest now, unfortunately, you can coupled to the heat. the heat index yesterday in parts of minnesota up to 129 degrees. so yeah. >> for any state but especially for minnesota. >> they're not used to that kind of heat. take a look at this animation from noaa. it helps to put things into perspective. this starts on july 13th and watch as that heat just grows and expands across the midwest. really intensifies across the southern plain states, then slowly starts to shift its way off toward the east. that last image you just saw there showed you the heat finally beginning to move out of the upper midwest. that's going to happen by tomorrow. in the meantime, take a look at this. feels like 95 in minneapolis already. it's 10:00 in the morning here. 90 in fargo, north dakota. 93 in cedar rapids. 97 in chicago. here all those advisories that we've been talking about in the nation's midsection, but now we're going to see changes. all this heat starts to the shift eastward. w

. >> that brings in jacqui jeras.aboob is the word of the day. >> what's the difference between a haboob and a regular sandstorm. >> pretty much the same thing. haboob is a severe event. take a look at this video. this reached up to 10,000 feet in the air and at one point, was as much as 50 miles wide. so it's created by strong winds associated with a thunderstorm and just caused extreme conditions, almost zero visibility. lots of trees down too, by the way. about 8,000 people in the phoenix area without power. and, of course, it grounded flights for several hours. there were delays throughout much of the night. take a look here, too, as the radar, just to put this in perspective for you, here's tucson where the storm started and moved it ways towards phoenix and continued to push off towards the east. more of those monsoonal thunderstorms will be possible in the southwest today as that moisture streams into the area. we'll also watch for thunderstorms in parts of the midwest, into the southeast and even in the northe
