meteorologist jacqui jeras is leading the way. jacqui, what's going on? >> reports on the southwest side of wichita of power flashes. so that tells us that tornado is moving into the city, into the southwest part into the suburbs, going towards downtown. this is a tornado emergency. we know this tornado has been as much as between a quarter of a mile and half of a mile wide. so this is an emergency where you have to be in shelter, in your safe place right now. there's been heavy rain the last 20 to 30 minutes across wichita. the tornado itself somewhere in this area right here. if i switch this over to velocity mode, i'll have a better idea. we're talking in this area, it's getting close to the national weather service. here's wichita in the downtown area. there you can see the storm moving through. notice this just turn to that bright orange. that's some of that debris. so this is just outside of the national weather service office, which they have evacuated by the way. that has a storm shelter in the basement. we're tracking storm chasers. there are doz

jacqui jeras, we've been following it here since last night. it was our breaking news all day.do we need to be on the lookout for? what's the latest? >> well, today day three of that event and we'll have day four tomorrow but the good news is the threat is really diminishing tonight. look at this. just a sliver of our tornado watches left from wisconsin stretching down into parts of arkansas. so, as you go to bed tonight, things are going to be looking better. just a slight risk then from the u.p. of michigan stretching down towards the gulf coast, and i think our best chance of severe weather then will fire up once again for tomorrow as our storm system heads eastward and temperatures warm up throughout the day and this is the risk area here in the eastern great lakes. it includes you in buffalo and includes you over towards cleveland and into pittsburgh, pennsylvania, and the risk that we're talking about more likely to see wind damage. i think the tornadoes are going to be few and far between, and one other note is that we have non-thunderstorm wind gusts that have just been

jacqui jeras is tracking this for us. tell us the latest. >> we think the next couple of hours, the atmosphere is really going to explode across the upper midwest. at this hour, we're focusing in on parts of arkansas, and into missouri. we've got a strong cold front that's pushing through here, igniting thunderstorms. some of these have been severe, with some hail and some damaging winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. no rotation with these storms just yet, but we could see some smaller scale tornadoes that develop down here. now, the bigger tornadoes we think will be developing in the next couple of areas. and this is the area in here that we're going to be watching for things to develop, and then head on up towards the north and into the east and parts of wisconsin. we already have one tornado warning right on the state line there, between nebraska and south dakota. it was producing a funnel cloud earlier, but this is in a very rural area, and no damage has been reported. so we think a tornado watch will likely be issu

choices, because it could get more difficult as the right goes on. >> thanks, sharon watson. >> jacqui jeras, look at that, as we look at those live pictures and see it on radar. jacqui, don't go anywhere. >> one more thing i was just told by the producer, is a tornado warning? wichita has been upgraded to a tornado emergency. that's a very rare thing. this is something that's pretty new, don, and there have been some new strong warnings issued with these warnings just this week and that's something the national weather service has been implementing. 2011 was such a deadly tornado season. so they're making changes and doing them this week just in time, as you can see, to help people understand the difference between tornado warnings. because sometimes we'll get a tornado, it will be indicated by radar. we're not sure scientifically where some storms produce tornadoes and why some don't. they can rotate but that funnel never gets to the ground. so when you issue a tornado emergency, that tells you that life and property could be gone. so here's the latest on that storm, tornado emergency in w

cnn meteorologist jacqui jeras now in the cnn weather center. gosh, jacqui, the hail with this storm also causing a lot of damage, right? >> it was amazing. take a look at the pictures we have for you, wialison. this is out of o'fallon, illinois. reports of softball to baseball-sized hail. knocked out windows and windshields on cars. this is from kathy bollington in louisville, kentucky. louisville had very large hail, golf ball to baseball-sized hail reported in that area as well. there were about 220 severe hail reports, all across the midwest. and when we say severe hail, we're generally talking about 1-inch in diameter or more, and that's about the size of the quarter. when we're talking about tennis ball-sized hail, baseball-sized hail, that's almost 3 inches across. that can do a lot of damage. when that's coming down at you at about 150 miles per hour from tens of thousands of feet above, that can cause a lot of damage and certainly injure you, and why you need to stay inside when there's a severe thunderstorm warning. because hail can be

jacqui jeras in the weather center. it looks windy where rob is, but adding to his list of what people look out for, what are the indicators? bad weather on the way? >> it is, so here is where rob is right now. he's in hennessy, oklahoma. this is where oklahoma city is, to the south. what i want you to take a look at is what is happening out west. this is the dry line where rob was talking about and where thunderstorms are initiating. this is a couple hours away from where rob is. we think the second round is going to come in late tonight after the sun is done. that's what makes this so particularly dangerous, is that it's going to be impossible to see some of the tornadoes as they move on through. this is what we call that high risk day. storm chasers are out there all over the place, not just rob marciano, but we're watching this with a network of storm spotters. this is near dodge city, kansas, and really central parts of kansas right now is the area at greatest risk for the next two hours for rotating thunderstorms

jacqui jeras tracking the story. it looks like it started yesterday, and more than 24 hours notice, this is unusual and very dangerous. >> it is, yeah, in fact, you mentioned it yesterday saying a high risk was issued for today. that's only the second time in history that the storm prediction center has done that. we had a tornado in norman, oklahoma, yesterday. today, 11 tornadoes reported. why haven't you see video? it's been rural. little damage or populated areas getting hit and the big damage is in central kansas and stretching into central nebraska. here is what we call a high risk day. this is really a serious situation. when we talk about a pds watch for a tornado watch, which is what is happening in nebraska and kansas, it's called a particularly dangerous situation where large violent tornadoes stay on the ground and cause a lot of destruction for a long period of time. how bad will it get? well, we could have 100 tornadoes out there in the next 24 hours. but if they don't hit anything. it's not so much of

and jacqui jeras is tracking this for us. jacq jacqui, there's no time for people to drop their guard. how's this shaping up right now? >> today won't be exactly the same kind of day as yesterday. we won't see quite as many tornados, but there's still quite a risk, especially across parts of the upper midwest. at this hour, we already have a tornado watch in place. that means conditions are favorable for conditions to develop. it's this line we're watching along the cold front, across parts of central missouri and then into northwestern parts of arkansas. for the most part, we've seen some wind damage here, with winds in excess of 60 miles per hour, but within this line, we could see some rotation and that will be a concern. now, the next area that we're going to be watching for this potential is up here in the upper midwest. believe it or not, yeah, that's snow you're seeing way over there in western parts of south dakota. that gives you an example of just how different these air masses are. so much colder behind the system,

. >>> let's get straight to our meteorologist jacqui jeras, we have tornado warnings in st. louis?ver downtown as we speak. it's a radar indicated tornado but skies looking very ominous, this is from the earth cam network, showing the st. louis arch, it literally turned from day to night looking like that. there is a possible tornado, in addition to that we're getting reports in overland, missouri of baseball and tennis ball-sizeded hail. so a lot of damages and a lot of threats associated with this storm. it moving through the downtown area right now, the tornado warning in effect until 6:30 central time, so that's just about ten minutes left on this warning, but we think this is a very intense storm that will stay strong as it moves through the entire metro area and makes its way to illinois. if we get any ground reports on that tornado, we'll break n. >>> we'll have our top stories coming up next, and imagine looking at a website full of missing children and seeing yourself. that's what happened to a philadelphia man, his story is just ahead. you know how to mix business... with

jacqui jeras in for rob marciano. tell me this is over. >> i hope so. i don't see anything in the long-range models that would indicate anything less. we will a book ended winter. our snowtober and our april snow. there's the two-footer park, laurel summit, pennsylvania. ten inches in newfield, and covington, about six inches of snow. for the most part the snow is winding down. still a bit of action coming in off the great lakes. there's a bit of wet weather moving up into parts of maine. our big low is there in ontario. it's pulling away. the winds will be a bit stronger. this could be impacting your travel if you're going to the airports. one other consequence of the wind. check out these pictures. they pushed the waves up. incredible rocking waves off of lake erie. there you can see it. this is in cleveland, ohio. those waves will continue to be strong for today as the winds are kicking still around 25 to 30 miles per hour. the rest of the country still quiet. a big flip-flop in temperatures. way below average in the east, and way above in the west.

. >> jacqui jeras is in the newsroom now. >> there's been a lot of standing water around the miami-dadea. record rain already reported since midnight, 2.86 inches and then the next 24 hours, we could be talking about an additional three to five on top of that. parts of south florida could get as much as eight inches of rain before all is said and done. we have a lot of tropical moisture that is in effect here. and this is affecting much of the caribbean, parts of jamaica, up into cuba, up into the bahamas in the atlantic we're getting all this rain and we are looking at flood advisories in effect, including you in ft. lauderdale. the ft. lauderdale air show had to be cancelled today because of the wet conditions. good call but kind of a bummer. things are calming down but we do think things are going to continue to fire up tonight and tomorrow. storms in parts of colorado and new mexico. this is the general area for severe weather tonight. many of the same areas that got hit this weekend, up towards kansas city and up toward st. louis. that frontal boundary remains parsed so you're goin
