ktvu's jade hernandez is live in san jose with the details. od morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we're live in front of the santa clara county superior court. two things are expected to happen here this morning. one, a rally in front of the courthouse and a preliminary hearing inside. william lynch has already pleaded not guilty to attacking retired priest. but he is expected to go before a judge for his preliminary hearing today. he alleges the priest molested him and his brother when they were boys. he's accused of tracking the priest down in a retirement home and beating him. lynch was charged with felony assault. he has said in prior interviews he wants to use the trial to shame the priest publicly. there are those who agree with lynch and supporters of lynch are also expected to meet in san jose today in front of the same courthouse. lynch will face a judge. supporters say he was a very active priest and portrayed them. supporters say they want to expose the system which protects predators. the 65-year-old former priest has denied

ktvu's jade hernandez is looking into the potential impact for commuters. what have you been able to find out, jade? >> reporter: well, we've learned here at this palo alto station many of the riders who get off actually work at stanford. they received subsidized rides. but the riders are well aware service reduction and station closures could effect them. well, it looks like today that cal train is ready to take steps to declare a fiscal emergency as pam mentioned. a fiscal crisis is forcing cal train to prepare to schedule a hearing in march where board members would declare an official emergency. this could burden riders in the future with additional fare increases, service reductions and even station closures. now cal train is facing a $30 million deficit. i want you to listen what riders had to say this morning. >> currently i commute up and some of the areas that we're interested in would be closer to the blossom hill transit station. so some of those cuts were made, that would be very difficult for me in terms of getting here to work every day. >> i t

jade hernandez is live in san jose right now to tell us more about this program, what it's doing. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. 30 minutes ago, i got off the phone with the santa clara county, valley transportation spokeswoman. she told me the vta started to hand out these free passes back in 2007. we're at this bus stop. the bus just pulled you. now, this pilot program back then aided the homeless community but the vta has gotten the green light to continue that program. this is for those looking for permanent house and jobs. participants must provide a photo i.d. and a sticker indicating they are entitled to free rides in order to get on the bus. social security agencies will determine eligibility. an estimated 3500 people a year are expected to take advantage of these trips. the goal is to get the homeless on their way to job interviews or medical appointments which would help them help themselves. >> the county advocates looked at various services need to help the homeless, the at-risk, homeless population. they identified transit as part of the solution to hel

ktvu's jade hernandez has new information about one of the passengers injured in last night's shooting. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. that passenger wasn't seriously injured, but shattered glass to the face did cause some injury overnight. we spoke to a deputy patrolling the area this morning. he said he wasn't on duty when the shooting happened. but this neighborhood has had its issues. we're live at the intersection of third and grove. and just a few feet away is the bus stop where this bus stopped and then was on its way to its destination when the shooting happened. we're live in west contra costa county near richmond. the shooting happened last night around 9:30. this is the damage left behind. you can see the back window where the bullet struck. an ac transit bus was driving by this intersection last night when bullets struck the side windows of the bus. shattered glass sprayed everywhere. we understand that there were a handful of passengers aboard. one passenger was hurt by flying glass. but no one was shot or seriously hurt. the bus we're told rolled to sevent
