jade hernandez joins us from san bruno top explain why. jade. >>> good morning. at this point we don't know how much they would have to pay for expenses. pg&e is facing a whopping $763 million tab after the san bruno blast september 9th. and funding is an issue. talk swirls around where that money will come from. pg&e says lawsuits will most likely be covered by the companies insurance. they will allow them to pass the cost allock to customers. if this work is direct result of negligence, shareholders not customers should bare some of the burden. part of the problem is the company expects to spend twice the amount on pipeline tasks, record searches, and other activities related to the san bruno blast. the cost expected between $200 and $300 million. regulators have ordered pg&e to conduct has sparked heated debate. that is not over. that's why we are here at the san bruno bart station this morning. how do they feel about shouldering part of this burden? we will talk to some of the bart passengers here this morning and folks here in san bruno. we will bring that t

jade hernandez tells us about demands. >> reporter: good morning, dave. the reason bus drivers are so upset the escorts are only coming at night. we moved to where this shooting happened right here at this bus stop. it's right at the corner of third and grove. the bus driver on this route is scared as are other drivers. ac transit granted temporary protection. last night several sheriffs deputies tailed bus drivers to make sure they did not run into problem. that's when bullet holes riddled one bus which left one of eight passengers hurt from flying glass. the driver reported a group of eight men approached his bus as the group outside moved to the back of the bus. the driver heard gunshots and saw bullet holes in his window. ac transit said the shooter had someone in mind when they opened fire. this is the fifth violent incident this year. ac transit spokesman told me drivers at night along the 376 line will be the only ones receiving a law enforcement shadow for now. >> right now we have stepped up our efforts in the evening but this plan was put into p

jade hernandez is looking into the potential impact on the 40,000 daily commuters and joins us live this morning from palo alto. jade. >> reporter: good morning. we are live at a cal trains station here in palo alto. cal train riders are facing more of things they don't want, service reduction, station closures and even fair increases. cal train today is expected to schedule a hearing in which board members would declare a fiscal emergency. this emergency could burden riders in the future. cal trains is facing a $30 million deficit. the solution at the time effected riders. in january cal train reduced its midday train service and raised fairs by 25 cents per zone boosting the price up to $8.50. the spokeswoman for cal train says the agency's biggest fiscal problem is a lack of dedicated funding stream. the budget is made up nearly of entirely fair revenue and funding contributions from three transit partners. now those agencies face their own deficits this year and can't contribute as much as they normally do. this morning ktvu received an e- mail from a woman describing herself as a fr

ktvu's jade hernandez has information about one of the passengers who was hurt in last night's shooting. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. the west contra costa county sheriff's office is investigating the shooting. it happened near this intersection at third and grove. you can see if we walk just a little bit just a few feet from a bus stop. now we're live at this bus stop near richmond. the ac transit bus was driving by this intersection last night around 9:30 when someone opened fire. the bullet sprayed the side windows of the bus. we understand there were a handful of passengers aboard. one passenger was hurt when shattered glass sprayed everywhere. the bus we're told rolled to seventh and pennsylvania where it stopped. right now investigators are looking into whether someone on board was targeted or if this was a random shooting which endangered those on board. now one of the injuries -- none of the injuries were considered serious. as soon as the bus starts rolling in this area we'll hear from passengers. more on this story in just about 30 minutes. we'r

jade hernandez is in san jose with what is required to take part in this new offer. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. that is right, they have to attempt to find housing and a job. we spoke to one bus driver this morning and we asked him what he thought about homeless people receiving free rides and there is some concern over how it will effect other riders. line 22 runs through this bus stop in east san jose. it's the longest route and there has been issues of homeless people riding to stay off the streets. in a month riders at this bus stop and any other could see changes. the vta is offering homeless people who qualify for pilot program free rides. the keyword here is qualified. the free rides are for those homeless enrolled in a program to help them find permanent housing. participates must find a photo id and stickers kinding the bearer -- indicating the bearer may get a free ride. now the goal is to get the homeless on their way to a job or medical appointment which would help them help themselves. they also provide a similar program in san mateo co

ktvu jade hernandez joins us now from san bruno to explain why. good morning, jade. >> reporter: we are live at a coffee shop here in san bruno. we are asking customers how they feel about pg&e making customers shoulder some of the cost of the explosion last fall. we are live in san bruno this morning. we learned that many haven't heard about the possibility of them picking up part of the tab. pg&e is facing a $367 million tab after the pipeline blast that turnrd homes into infer owes. even though they would pick up lawsuits filed by residents pg&e may ask state regulators to let the company pass along some of the expense to customers. the type of pipeline test and inspections that regulators are commanding are more costly than first expected. this year alone the costs are expected to between $200 and $300 million. it has sparked heated debate over who should pay for this. we asked residents what they thought about pg&e push to get cost emerge not shareholders to help with the cost. >> i want to live in a safe environment. again, if they are truly

jade hernandez joins us live. she is in oakland. how is it where you are, jade? >> reporter: first off there are wind advisories throughout the bay area. we're live in the oakland hills behind me. you can see behind me the trees very blustery. commuters will notice the difference driving this morning. let's take a look at one of the traffic cameras on the haywood bridge. a wind advisory was issued just after midnight on the bridge. a wind advisory was issued for the alameda-dublin area. you're taking a look at what it sounded like outside a half hour ago here in oakland. law enforcement agencies in several different cities received calls about the high winds in certain areas. oakland police answered a couple of those calls. contra costa county also heard about hearing minor issues with the wind. we contacted bail arms this morning we were told they are not allowed to comment whether strong blustery winds left them fielding more phone calls. but just gauging the drive from walnut creek to oakland and from oakland to the oakland hills this morning winds seem much s

ktvu's jade hernandez is live in san jose with the details. od morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we're live in front of the santa clara county superior court. two things are expected to happen here this morning. one, a rally in front of the courthouse and a preliminary hearing inside. william lynch has already pleaded not guilty to attacking retired priest. but he is expected to go before a judge for his preliminary hearing today. he alleges the priest molested him and his brother when they were boys. he's accused of tracking the priest down in a retirement home and beating him. lynch was charged with felony assault. he has said in prior interviews he wants to use the trial to shame the priest publicly. there are those who agree with lynch and supporters of lynch are also expected to meet in san jose today in front of the same courthouse. lynch will face a judge. supporters say he was a very active priest and portrayed them. supporters say they want to expose the system which protects predators. the 65-year-old former priest has denied

ktvu's jade hernandez is looking into the potential impact for commuters. what have you been able to find out, jade? >> reporter: well, we've learned here at this palo alto station many of the riders who get off actually work at stanford. they received subsidized rides. but the riders are well aware service reduction and station closures could effect them. well, it looks like today that cal train is ready to take steps to declare a fiscal emergency as pam mentioned. a fiscal crisis is forcing cal train to prepare to schedule a hearing in march where board members would declare an official emergency. this could burden riders in the future with additional fare increases, service reductions and even station closures. now cal train is facing a $30 million deficit. i want you to listen what riders had to say this morning. >> currently i commute up and some of the areas that we're interested in would be closer to the blossom hill transit station. so some of those cuts were made, that would be very difficult for me in terms of getting here to work every day. >> i t

jade hernandez is live in san jose right now to tell us more about this program, what it's doing. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. 30 minutes ago, i got off the phone with the santa clara county, valley transportation spokeswoman. she told me the vta started to hand out these free passes back in 2007. we're at this bus stop. the bus just pulled you. now, this pilot program back then aided the homeless community but the vta has gotten the green light to continue that program. this is for those looking for permanent house and jobs. participants must provide a photo i.d. and a sticker indicating they are entitled to free rides in order to get on the bus. social security agencies will determine eligibility. an estimated 3500 people a year are expected to take advantage of these trips. the goal is to get the homeless on their way to job interviews or medical appointments which would help them help themselves. >> the county advocates looked at various services need to help the homeless, the at-risk, homeless population. they identified transit as part of the solution to hel

ktvu's jade hernandez live at norman y. ma theta san jose international airport with more of a potential name change. what's going on, jade. >> reporter: dave, it could be a longer name. city officials want people to know that san jose's international airport is the true gateway to silicon valley. you don't have to fly into san francisco or oakland. no one is quite sure how to do that. so a committee today meets to discuss putting silicon valley in the name so everyone can see the connection. the discussion is to turn the san jose international airport name to the norman y. san jose silicon valley international airport. it's a mouthful and doesn't necessarily roll off the tongue. the struggling airport recently completed a $1.3 billion upgrade last summer. the name change is one of the ways the airport could spur business. since 2008 san jose's airport has lost a quarter of its passengers and a third of scheduled flights. talk of outsourcing police and fire protection. and remaining flights can be pricey compared to the othe

ktvu's jade hernandez has new information about one of the passengers injured in last night's shooting. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. that passenger wasn't seriously injured, but shattered glass to the face did cause some injury overnight. we spoke to a deputy patrolling the area this morning. he said he wasn't on duty when the shooting happened. but this neighborhood has had its issues. we're live at the intersection of third and grove. and just a few feet away is the bus stop where this bus stopped and then was on its way to its destination when the shooting happened. we're live in west contra costa county near richmond. the shooting happened last night around 9:30. this is the damage left behind. you can see the back window where the bullet struck. an ac transit bus was driving by this intersection last night when bullets struck the side windows of the bus. shattered glass sprayed everywhere. we understand that there were a handful of passengers aboard. one passenger was hurt by flying glass. but no one was shot or seriously hurt. the bus we're told rolled to sevent

ktvu's jade hernandez live this morning with reaction to the tragedy in patterson. >> reporter: we, you can imagine how surprised the hundreds of party son residents gathered here at city -- patterson residents gathered here at the city hall. everyone gathered for a vigil. it had turned into a prayer memorial. ♪ i'm gonna let it shine ♪ >> the hundreds of patterson residents wanted to show their support to the family who had just hours before received the news. the body of the clothes matching what juliani cardenas was wearing had been found. tabitha car, his mother, never gave up hope. but she said her ex, jose esteban rodriquez, would not hurt her son but authorities now say he drove the little boy and himself in the canal 45 minutes after abducting him. juliani's mother could not contain her anger for her ex- boyfriend. jade hernandez has been out, looking for the trouble spots.he's back with us live up in the oakland hills. >> reporter: good morning. that clear sky shouldn't fool you. there are still a couple of wind advisories in place here in the bay area. for some residents, the wind woke them up. for others, it just made for a crazy story to tell. >> it was really hard at 4:00 or 5:00 this morning. it blew my front door open. it blew a whole pile of leaves down the hallway. >> reporter: the chp officers found a huge tree branch at the thornton onramp this morning. gusty winds forced a wind veesry for the san mateo hayward bridge. this electronic sign warned drivers about the advisory after midnight. a second wind advisory was issued for the alameda county, dublin area after 1:00. both advisories are still in place now. the wind left a mark also in areas without advisories. in montclair, the signs in front of several stores blown over. one man said his dog polly noticed the winds before he did. >> she woke me up, because the winds were blowing, and trees
