jade hernandez joining us live from the scene. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. the couple inside of this home very lucky this morning. when we arrived firefighters told us it's not unusual but they have a fire hydrant in front of the home so that helped out a bit this morning. you can't see from the front of this home. there is a roof collapse on the backside of the house. by the time firefighters arrived this home was fully engulfed in flames. two people were inside when the fire broke out. the couple along with their three pet birds managed to get out safely. they did so without phones in the house to call for help or smoke detectors. firefighters poured water on the side of the house because fire threatened the house next door. when firefighters arrived they realized the flames were effecting a home along madison here in bay point. we spoke to one of the occupants of 236 madison. he told us his girlfriend owns the home. >> i grabbed the hose. i started squirting it up to the air vent. we don't have a telephone. >> a fully involved attic fire. it was reported

jade hernandez is live on the scene with more on what's happening. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. a lot going on here right now even at this hour. this is tailor and redding. firefighters wrapping up right here. even the american red cross still out here this morning. this fire broke out around 9:00 last night. we've been told there was partial roof collapse and that the fire crawled up the fire escape. we can tell you right now everyone is accounted for but there were half a dozen people rescued last night. this was a three-alarm fire. as i mentioned the american red cross is out here. they set up across the street. all total there were about 20 injuries. six of which suffered smoke inhalation and taken to the hospital. this six story building is located at 201 eddie street. we spoke to the battalion chief. >> fire damage, yes. the fire got up in the walls and they had to open the walls up and squirt water to put them out. there is fire damage from the first floor through the roof. >> reporter: as i mentioned before, half a dozen res

jade hernandez is live at golden gate park to tell us what happened and how the police are responding to this. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. just a half hour ago we watched a san francisco police officer drive by our location right here in golden gate park. he had his spotlight on and patrolling slow through this area. golden gate park through the day is safe. at night they have seen the work of vandals and violent attacks. last friday inside golden gate park police say four people pistol whipped a homeless man and burned down his tent. then on monday, a passer by discovered an unconscious man beaten so badly the 33-year-old could not remember the attack. the police are also finding vandalism. a police captain showed us yesterday where they destroyed park benches and hacked down redwood trees. they say they need the publics assistance in order to. there seems to be an influx of wonder. >> what is our concern this time of year as it warms up we are getting an inany objection of homeless tour. and these folks that are living out here becomes victims of those folks for r

jade hernandez has been out this morning, visiting a lot of viewing parties. de started at this one in san jose. she's now on her way to another one in san francisco. jade will join us at 8:00 this morning. >>> turning to local news, we're following overnight news in san jose. investigators are looking for the cause of an early-morning house fire on drake street. kraig debro tells is this same home burned -- tell us this same home burned a few months ago. >> reporter: good morning, tori. behind me is home that burn this morning as well as four months ago. there's still some of it left. there's concern that the same thing could happen for the third time. no one occupied the home. it's still a mystery how did the same house catch fire twice? firefighters made sure people were safe until a water- carrying engine arrived four minutes later. according to firefighters, those four minutes might not have made a difference. >> flames, probably 0, 30 -- 20, 30 feet in the air. >> reporter: this was back in january of 2011, the so same building that served as a marijuana

jade hernandez has more. >> reporter: this video shows flames erupting from the roof which partially collapsed. fire crawled from the bottom to the top of the towers in the tenderloin as firefighters rescued about a dozen -- about a dozen residents. >> i heard a lot of smokes and i looked out my windowle it started at the first floor, from the fire chute all the way to the top. >> once we got up there, there was metal and lath and once we got up there, we were able to do horizontal work and put the fire out. >> there was so much smoke, i ran back in and i tried to get my cats but the smoke was too thick. >> reporter: too thick which the firefighters brought to her -- >> the firefighters didn't find them. they wouldn't find them. ed red cross found them -- the red cross found them. >> reporter: inside that fourth floor apartment where the american red cross kept on the spotlight where they searched for the animals. 2 residents suffered from smoke inhalation and went to the hospital. 63 residents are displaced. a few of them boarded a bus bound for nearby hotels. 6 other residents were

jade hernandez has more. >> reporter: proving the difficulty of ensuring safety, but caught in the act, these copper thieves picked the wrong day to sell. officers found 30 pounds wires inside the thieves -- in the thief's truck. >> to do what these individuals were doing, it's probably gonna get worse. >> reporter: those aboard the special safety train today are not only on the lookout for thieves but pedestrians and drivers illegally crossing railroad tracks. >> the first line of defense we have is that horn. and you whistle and you whistle and whistle. they don't get off and then you have to put the train in emergency. >> reporter: we spoke to several engineers, one in particular who told us about a tragedy that still haunts had him. a military officer in a hurry to beat a train. it takes a mile to stop a train going 55 miles an hour. >> when i got out, there was a picture of -- it looked like he in a cap and gown with his dad. on the other side of the picture, he and a baby -- that was tough. >> reporter: union pacific police, along with local police, conducted arrests and issued c

ktvu's jade hernandez live in concord now to tell us what the neighbors are saying. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. when we arrived this morning concord police had pulled crime tape around the home in question. this home is located along bedford between belmont and lexington road in concord. we know at the top of this hour this might be a homicide related to a domestic dispute. police are not looking for any suspects this morning, but they did identify a body found inside of a home along the 2300 block of bedford road. after being called to the house last night around 8:30. someone at the home called dispatch for help. concord police at this point won't say how the victim died, whether the victim was man or woman or name or age of the victim. concord police have indicated this is a homicide investigation. more information is expected to be released this afternoon by the department. the department is asking anyone with any information in this case to call the department. we spoke to neighbors this morning as dave mentioned who did not feel comfortable go

ktvu's jade hernandez has more now on a group of homeless people who have been living in that building. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. smoke continues to billow from this former car dealership. and about 50 people lived inside of the building when the fire broke out. three of which are still out here this morning. there's a lot of stuff out here this morning. no one right now wanted to talk to me about what they were going to do next, but yesterday one woman voiced her concerns. >> where are we going to go? >> reporter: vallejo firefighters were call today this building at 4301 sonoma boulevard at 1:00 yesterday. it's the third fire here in three weeks. fire investigators believe someone may have been using a torch to cut metal out of the building in what used to be the dealership's auto repair shop. hours after being reported firefighters took these pictures. the building had become a refuge of sorts for homeless people. firefighters found three feet of debris and trash in some parts of the former dealership. the building could be torn down as early as tomorrow. a city

ktvu's jade hernandez talked with some of the people who had to run for their lives. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. in the last 30 minutes we've learned more about this building which caught fire around 9:00 last night. we know now that this fire started at the bottom floor and crawled all the way to the roof via the garbage chute. within the last hour firefighters had a flare up on the roof. now ten firefighters are on fire watch. this building is located at 201 eddy street right here in san francisco. it's the franciscan towers apartment complex with 75 apartments inside. one of the residents we spoke to did not see flames, but got out as quickly as he could not knowing flames had turned this into a three-alarm blaze. >> i was in my room. and all of a sudden i smelled smoke. so i ran out of my room, the whole hallway's full of smoke. i just panicked and ran downstairs as fast as i could. >> reporter: we know right now that the american red cross is sheltering 63 people plus an additional 26 people with special needs are being housed at a different fac

jade hernandez has new december december -- new details. >> reporter: nearly 12 hours after the crime took place, the dream scene is -- the crime is still here. in fact, the sergeant's car is in the parking lot. she got out of her squad where this morning when she noticed a suspicious individual. within minutes, she was fighting for her life. >> very quickly it got violent. he started to attack her, punch her, and basically she said he tried to stomp my head into the ground. >> reporter: the sergeant, the 20-year veteran of the dublin police department is not being identified at this point. we're told she suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. what dublin investigators an the sheriff's department tried to do this morning is to determine what triggered the transient known for fighting and public drunkenness. his name has not been released. we've been told so far, that the sergeant noticed a man hanging out alone around 1:0 this morning on amadar plaza road and st. patrick way. the sergeant called for backup before getting out of her car. she approached. an attack ensued. a

ktvu's jade hernandez is there now. and, jade, i understand there's new information, right? >> reporter: well, dave, we do have new information at this hour. we can tell you that concord is investigating this as a homicide investigation. they have the yellow crime tape up around the home where this homicide happened last night. now concord police told us that this involved one victim. but we've just witnessed two bodies being loaded up into the medical examiner's van. as i mentioned earlier, police are not looking for any suspects this morning. but they did tell us this was a homicide investigation. we have now just learned two bodies have been loaded up into the medical examiner's van. this is the latest that we know at this hour. concord police went door to door to every home on this block. they asked neighbors what they saw and heard. and within the past hour as i mentioned, the medical examiner has arrived. now the m.e. will take the bodies away as soon as the detectives wrap up this investigation here at the scene. this home is located on bedford between belmont and lex

ktvu jade hernandez joining us live she is in berkeley. how do people find out about this in the first place? >> reporter: homeowners we spoke to heard rushing water. they had no idea it was this. >> i was awakened by a very, very loud sound of water rushing. i looked out the window and saw water coming down both sides of my house. >> reporter: you are looking at one berkeley homeowner woke up to this morning. his backyard is along shattuc avenue and los angeles. when he first arrived he and his wife did not rush to pick up sandbags because they waited for the water to turn off. it took an hour between 2:30 and 3:30 before they could identify and shut off the water. an east bay mud water said a six inch steel pipe burst over night. for now, residents along this block about 30 households will be without water for three to eight hours. the homeowner says he will have to wait for daylight to see what damage it caused. >> the neighbor across the street has a lot of water coming up under his garage and some of the neighbors have a little water

jade hernandez is at at & t park. jade will have much more on the security efforts coming up for you at 6:30. >>> in just a couple of hours from right now, jury deliberations resume in the barry bonds' trial. allie rasmus tells us about the testimony that will get a second hearing this morning. what is going on? >> reporter: dave, today the jury will take a closer look at the testimony in a key witness in this trial. that witness is kathy hoskins. she was bonds' personal shopper for a number of years. she testified on the stands that she saw the personal trainer inject bonds in the belly button. now the jury will have to decide whether barry bonds' committed perjury when he told the grand jury back in 2003 he never knowingly took steroids or human growth hormone. bonds' faces three charge of making false statements one charge of obstruction of justice. they could find him guilty of some of the charges, all of them, or none at all. because of the intense media attention on the trial, they are not expecting a hung jury.

ktvu's jade hernandez is there now with what's happening right now and what firefighters are planning this morning. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. about 20 minutes ago we watched a big flair up right here at this dealership. when we pulled up this morning we could see the smoke and smell it. as early as tomorrow this building could be torn down. it's been burning since yesterday afternoon at 1:00 as claudine mentioned. it's the third fire in three weeks. the vallejo fire department investigators believe someone was cutting metal out of the building possibly using a butane torch which sparked flames. garbage and debris inside reached three feet in some spots. that's one of the reasons why firefighters believe this building could be -- could continue to burn this morning. to give you some background, the cadillac dealership closed two years ago and became a sort of last resort refuge for homeless people. about 50 people are left without a place to stay now that flames are bringing down the building. vallejo firefighters couldn't do much about the fire inside the former d

ktvu's jade hernandez has been out there all morning. in about 30 minutes from now she'll have the very latest on what firefighters plan to do today. >>> oakland police are investigating after a shooting victim was dropped off where paramedics were working on an unrelated case. it happened just after 8:00 last night. paramedics on 17th and international for an unrelated call when a car suddenly pulled up. the passengers inside dropped off this shooting victim and then drove off. the shooting victim later died at the hospital. police are searching for that car. it is a silver dodge daytona with tinted windows and bullet hole on the driver side door. >>> stanford police have released a new description of a man who broke into a graduate housing apartment and sexually assaulted a sleeping woman. investigators say he's a dark skinned man about 30 years old. 5'6" with a chubby build. he has wavy black hair and rounded nose. that attack took place on saturday night uncouple stock circle. police leave that the attacker got in through an unlocked

jade hernandez has been gathering more information about what happened. jade. >> reporter: claudine, firefighters are monitoring hot spots. it doesn't look like this home is destroyed but it is. the fire broke out a couple hours ago and the residents living in this home were very lucky. no phones in the home and no smoke detectors. the firefighters you are looking at poured water on the side house because the fire threatened the house next door. dispatch received a call about an outdoor house. we spoke to one of the occupants inside of the washington home. a man told us he walked down stairs to get ice cream when he smelled was a burning cigarette. that's when he knew something was wrong. he couldn't call for help because he doesn't have any phones in his home. luckily he was able to get himself and his girlfriend and birds out safely. >> we went down stairs to get ice cream. there was no smoke noticeable at the time. by the time i got the ice cream and went back upstairs above the garage, we go i smell smoke. >> flames destroyed the home and the cause is

live from oakland international, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> all right, jade. another southwest flight that took off from the bay area had to make an emergency landing. the flight was from oakland to san diego. it landed safely in los angeles last night after reports of an electrical burning smell in the plane's cabin. 142 people were on board. no one was hurt. this emergency landing is said to be unrelated to the cracks that forced friday's landing in arizona. >>> in redwood city overnight a mother and her four children safely escaped a fire that destroyed their home. it happened about 2:00 a.m. this morning in the harbor village mobile home park on bay shore road. firefighters say the mother woke up, she found the flames. her screaming woke up her 17- year-old son and he helped get the other children out of the house. the red cross is now helping them all find a place to stay. firefighters say it appears the fire started near a drier in the home. >>> vallejo police are looking for suspects in a shooting that seriously injured a man. that happened shortly befo

ktvu's jade hernandez is in alameda right now with details about this story we're following. morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. several people are very concerned about that, dave. we're live in alameda this morning because the focus later -- a little later, this morning will be on the grass in this neighborhood. a professor from uc berkeley's actually going to take samples from this grass here in alameda to his uc berkeley lab for radiation testing. you might remember the name. we spoke with the professor as the radiation from the nuclear plant made its way to the west coast. the professor and his students gathered water and air samples from the rooftop of his berkeley classroom and office. the environmental protection agency has tested last month's rainwater and found it exceeded federal standards for radioactive iodine in drinking water by 46 times in japan near the plant. but one group along with the professor called the food and water watch, national organization, says the epa is not releasing enough data about radiation from the japanese nuclear meltdown. they wan

ktvu's jade hernandez telling us it involves a discovery at a bay area high school campus a couple of years ago. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. it's unclear why the human remains which were found when this gym was built a couple of years ago weren't buried, but it is clear to the most likely descendent that it's time to do something. the human remains unearthed in 2009 have still not been properly buried. crews found the remains when they began building the new gymnasium. the remains are likely those of the tribe in the sack lin village once located in central contra costa county. no one knew the remains were still currently stored in 88 archives boxes. they date back 250 to 2,000 years ago. the district was responsible for paying the removal cost set around $25,000. this issue will most likely be addressed at the next district board meeting. it's still unclear where the boxes holding the remains are being kept. live from danville this morning, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> pg&e is hoping to avoid widespread water pressure tests on pipelines with missing saf

jade hernandez joins us live to explain why. >> good morning, we've been watching traffic for an hour now. caltrans shut down a lane on highway. you can see to my left, the electronic message board directing traffic away from the inside lane. drivers you are warned. one lane of eastbound traffic will be closed between 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 in the afternoon between bailey road and railroad avenue over the next few weeks. westbound traffic will be closed from 1:00 p.m. million 4:00 in the afternoon. b.a.r.t.'s project will eventually carry passengers from the pittsburg/bay point station to a station off hillcrest and antioch. that's yet to be built. so the station has planned one near the railroad avenue. caltrans needs to shut down lanes. concerned drivers should take alternate routes to avoid delays. >>> drivers will experience a lane closure in each direction, wednesday, thursday and friday. the westbound lane closure takes place from 10:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. the eastbound closure between 11:00 at night and 6:00 in the morning and -- it's expected to last a couple of weeks. one more n
