jade hernandez is live in the city. jade, what's happening right now? >> reporter: well, i can tell you the parade is starting on time with the sound of firecrackers. you can see behind me, these are just some of the floats getting ready right here at second and market. now, this parade route showcases about 100 floats and 5,000 participants. it began here around 5:15. we spoke to one group earlier which had 80 young people walking a 168-foot-long dragon. of course, that's special because this is the year of the dragon. you can see so many dragons, very colorful. in fact this is the group we spoke to earlier. a lot of the participants and volunteers of this particular dragon are immigrants. i was told by the group organizer that it was very special for them to participate this year. just to give you an idea, some stats on the parade this one and a half mile parade route winds through the city heading west on geary street, returning east on post, north on kearny street. the finale, of course, is in china town. that kicks off the new lunar year. many of t
