ktvu's jade hernandez spoke exclusively to a woman almost hit by the same suspect. >> reporter: the r nurse was parking her car when she saw something coming toward her. >> so i tried to dodge him because he was coming head on and he actually ran into the cement pot that stopped the car. >> reporter: san francisco police arrived shortly after to find this car and its driver slamed into the concrete planter at st. mary's medical center. >> he got out of the car with his hands up and asked the cops what happened. >> reporter: they found a pedestrian who had been struck and killed in the crosswalk. police say this man, who suffered only minor cuts to his face and hands struck the pedestrian going at least 60 miles per hour if not more. he never slowed down. in an attempt to get away from the accident and police the department says he damaged four cars here along the medical center and left pieces of his own car and four different locations. >> when you have a lot of scenes it takes more time to investigate because you have to put the pieces together and collect evidence and see where the

ktvu's jade hernandez just arrived there on scene. she's with us live now with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. within the last hour we've learned that the man shot along this trail is undergoing surgery right now. he was shot in the shoulder. his family called pittsburg police when they discovered what happened last night. pittsburg police have turned over this investigation to the east bay regional park police because the shooting took place on the trail which is park jurisdiction. this was the scene just about 20 minutes ago. we've been told by police this morning the young man shot said he was along the trail near crestview avenue around 11:30 last night when one of four men shot at him two or three times. only one of the four men, the victim said, had a gun. the victim would not say if he knew or had a connection with the suspect. but the victim does live in the neighborhood and near the trail. park police believe the shooting was not random. >> there were some gang affiliations and some words exchanged it would suggest tha

just about 30 minutes ago ktvu's jade hernandez got important new information about what may be behind this killing. jade. >> reporter: we're going to hear more from the san jose police spokesman but he told me this morning that the victim is latino, he is in his 20s. investigators don't know at this point if this is gang- related, but they are investigating it as such. i want you to take a look at what the scene looked like just about an hour ago. this deadly shooting is the 20th homicide of the year. and the gang unit has admitted they battle gang issues here in the city. and many of this year's early homicides were tied to gangs. this morning police are looking into whether this homicide is tied to gangs as well. this is what we know so far. someone reported hearing shots fired after 11:00 last night at checkers here in east san jose. when police arrived they found a man bleeding in the street with gunshot wounds. he died at the hospital. the shooting took place in a neighborhood filled with apartment complexes. so we don't know if the man lived in the area or whether he was visitin

ktvu's jade hernandez joining us live to tell us what investigators are doing right now. jade. >> reporter: fire watch continues at this hour, dave. building inspectors and investigators are expected to be back out here looking at this building. the damage is apparent from the front of the park hotel where the fire started. what isn't clear is what caused flames. we did however speak to firefighters who explained this morning firefighters had to use thermal imaging to check on hot spots. you're looking at news chopper 2. a three story apartment building located near fulsome last night around 5:30. burning timbers fell from the hotel causing the fire chief to evacuate firefighters from the building. flames spread to two adjacent structures. one commercial, the other a six unit apartment building. a handful of people were treated for smoke inhalation. at least 75 people were requested help from the american red cross which set up a temporary shelter around the corner at the gene friend recreation center. >> we had lines let into the building in case we find hot spots. the t

ktvu's jade hernandez is out there. she's live in pittsburg. jade. >> reporter: this shooting took place nearly 12 hours ago and yet the suspect's car right here still in the parking lot where the suspect driving ended up after a short chase involving a pittsburg police officer. this investigation as you can tell is not over yet despite a dramatic arrest. a pittsburg police officer noticed a car roll through a stop sign last night. the officer tried to pull the driver over and the suspect sped off. the short chase ended behind a wells fargo bank near the atlantic plaza shopping center here in pittsburg. what happened next authorities say pushed a 13 year veteran of the police force to open fire after the driver got out of his car and opened fire on the officer. the suspect then ran past west boulevard and mad lin street where police lost sight of him. until hours later a 27-year-old took off toward a fourplex, the home of an acquaintance. police finally coaxed him out of an attic where they found him suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. t

reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time now 6:02. a young woman has died after a tragic early morning accident. this happened just after 1:00 a.m. on northbound 101 in marin county. just look at these pictures. a 22-year-old woman her car hit the guardrail on the right side of the freeway then her car stopped in one of the lanes. that's when it was smashed into by a van going about 65 miles an hour. she was killed by the impact. four passengers in the van were treated and released at the scene. firefighters say the original crash may have broken the car lights on the woman's car and it was hard for other drivers to see her. >>> meantime a pedestrian died on a south bay expressway just hours ago and a chp investigation continues. now this happened in campbell just after 11:00 last night on the san tomas expressway. southbound lanes were shut down for about two hours. police say a man in his 20s was hit and killed by a car. the driver did stop immediately and is cooperating with investigators. we still don't know why the young man was

ktvu's jade hernandez joining us live with why pg&e's releasing the gas in the first place. jade. >> reporter: that's right. gas line 132a is a small feeder line. and pg&e is testing it later today. first they'll release a gas inside of it and then they'll push high pressure water through it. that small feeder line meets a major line right here at shoreline boulevard and middlefield road. now if gas line 132 sounds familiar, it should. it's the same line which runs up the peninsula and exploded in san bruno last fall. a few weeks ago pg&e held a meeting. the utility alerted neighbors they would be testing the pipeline today. the pipeline runs under businesses and homes from shoreline golf links to the middle school. pg&e says they still aren't too sure who will pay for the testing which is expected to cost as much as half a million dollars. this is what residents can expect to either hear or see today. you're looking at video provided by pg&e of high pressure water testing. gas inside 132a will be quickly released into the atmosphere. it should dissipate quickly. mountain vi

jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you for the update, jade. >>> it's three minutes after:00. >>> an oakland police officer is being hailed as a hero after quickly responding to an overnight fire. it started around 11:0 last night at an apartment near 38th avenue and carrington. kraig debro has been coveringth story all morning. >> reporter: oakland firefighters pounced on this fire and stopped it from spedding to other unit -- spreading to other units. someone else being hailed a hero is a police officer. this is the terrace to the apartment and this is the window where officers yelled inside. an adult male said he was taking a shower when he heard a loud pop. the man said he left the shower, he found the fire but didn't have time to rest. the police officer found a blanket to cover the man and pulled him from the apartment. the man said he also saved others. >> i heard the cop banging on the doors and next thing i know, i guess, he kicked in a few doors and he was trying to make sure there was nobody in the apartment. >> doing my job, doing what they pay me to do. i love

ktvu's jade hernandez joining us live to talk about repairs that bart says just can't wait.t are they talking about, jade? >> well, we moved in the last hour to show you the bay bridge. this is just one of the spots that you're going to experience delays over the weekend. the good news is, the bridge won't be closed entirely. the bad news, select eastbound lanes will be closed from 8:00 at night until 5:00 in the morning, both saturday and sunday this weekend. westbound traffic won't be affected. the detours will allow construction crews to work between existing and new bridges, to complete the new eastbound lanes. it'll have a slightly different approach after the weekend. >> bay bridge commuters aren't the only ones to experience a slow down in the commute as well. this picture shows damage done by a fire back on december 19th. over the next two weekends, expect delays and different routes due to repair work. bart is calling the work vital maintenance to the damaged electric case. we were told this morning the riders most affected, dublin and fremont riders. emphasis was o

ktvu's jade hernandez is getting reaction to bin laden's death from fremont. jade. >> reporter: good morning. we're live in front of the office of a nonprofit group which pushes understanding between muslims and the u.s. and the executive director of this group sent out a statement three and a half hours ago. the executive director says "with a major chapter of the war on terror closed by the death of osama bin laden, we hope for a new chapter of dialogue and peace between the u.s. and muslim world." the statement is directly from the executive director. his organizations model leading the way towards a better tomorrow. we spoke to a stanford professor who gave us his reaction on the news. he's a middle east history professor for the university. >> well like all americans i imagine i'm happy that he's been killed. i would have preferred he be put on trial, but if not this is the next best. >> reporter: we're live in fremont this morning because fremont has one of the largest afghan communities. we hope to have more from those who are reacting from bin laden's

ktvu's jade hernandez joining us live now from pittsburgh pittsburg to tell us about the shooting and arrest. >> reporter: dave, that car is the suspect's car and it remains in the parking lot where it ended up yesterday evening. this is a routine traffic stop in pittsburg. but then a dramatic shootout, man hunt and arrest for some who were just out shopping it was all too much. >> when i got off the bus i just seen two brothers run across the street. that's all i know. >> reporter: news chopper 2 shows us the scene after shots rang out around 5:30 yesterday evening. a pittsburg police officer on routine patrol noticed a car roll through a stop sign. instead of pulling over the suspect sped off forcing the officer into a short chase. but the suspect driving wasn't about to give up there. he got out, pulled out a gun and opened fire on the officer still sitting in his patrol car. the officer, a 13 year veteran of the force, returned fire but the suspect managed to get past the boulevard and maudlin street until hours later 27- year-old jones was tracked to a fourplex. the home of an ac

ktvu's jade hernandez joining us live now from danville to tell us what the police and school officials are saying. jade. >> reporter: parents in the san ramon valley school district received e-mails about this missing teen. and in fact they're still looking for her this morning. i want you to take a look at her picture. take a glimpse at 15-year-old allie bayliss. a sophomore at san ramon valley high. her parents reported her missing yesterday around 4:00 when her parents hadn't heard from her. she was last seen at the high school on her bike. bayliss is considered at risk and a run away. danville police and the contra costa county sheriff office rescue teams searched until late last night. police say this is not an abduction case. we spoke to the assistant principal yesterday. she described the kind of student allie has proven to be at san ramon valley high in her two years at the school. >> great student. she's a swimmer. was an ncs championship swimmer. she teaches piano in her spare time. she was just hired here at the rec center. very active student. >> reporter: bayliss was last

ktvu's jade hernandez tells us who is coming to the aid of these people who have been forced from their homes. jade. >> reporter: well, we have a new development. within the past 20 minutes firefighters found a chihuahua inside of that building. that building was destroyed and ravaged by flames last night. we've been told the fire department has called the spca. the dog didn't have a name tag, but firefighters tell me they are certain they'll find the owner. the small dog shaking from its ordeal seemed to be all right. we spoke to the firefighter who found him. you're going to hear from him in just a second. but we can tell you right now that firefighters are still on fire watch. and that's one of the reasons why the firefighter was able to go into one of the apartment buildings and find that dog because they were looking for hot spots this morning. about an hour ago firefighters switched out crews here. the damage is apparent from the front of the park hotel where the fire started. what isn't clear this morning is what caused the flames. there are a couple residents walking around this

ktvu's jade hernandez just spoke to a family friend about the little girl. jade, she's telling ut 4-month- old turn up in -- you the 4- month-old turned you -- turnup ed in southern california? >> reporter: that's right. she's safe and sound and headed back home. i want to show you the facebook page that was gathered for this little girl. "located safe." we know authorities were driving back here where baby was reported missing and they were still on the road around midnight. this is a picture of the baby, ramy amadea gallego. a friend toll us she wanted to speak to the baby's mother because she told us the circumstances surrounding the baby's discovery. we know this -- 4-month-old a mother reported she put the little one down saturday night and eight hours later, the baby was gone from the crib. 20 minutes later after finding the baby gone, they called for help. she was not the only infant in the home. her siblings were home but they were not hurt. >> i was shocked and heartbroken. i feel like i'm in a bad dream. i just -- i cannot imagine waking up to nurs

ktvu's jade hernandez joining us this morning live at the golden gate bridge with more on the reasons bridge officials are considering these new safety rules. jade. >> reporter: that's right. the aim to reduce speed is to actually cut down on the number of accidents on the golden gate bridge. the bridge district has proposed a 10 miles per hour speed limit. and they're holding two bike safety meetings and open houses today to discuss that. some cyclists say no way to a speed limit change. one main reason is the $100 fine for violators. now the first meeting is scheduled to take place in an hour from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 right here at vista point on the marin side of the bridge. and the second is from 3:00 to 5:00 at the district's administrative offices on the other side of the bridge. now there's also talk about a 5 miles per hour speed limit around construction zones on the bridge as well. coming up we're going to gauge reaction here on the bridge about a possible new lower speed limit and how it would effect cyclists in the future. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news.

ktvu's jade hernandez joining us live. she's in mountain view right now to tell us why pg&e is venting this gas in the first place. jade? >> reporter: that's right i just got off the phone with a pg&e spokesperson. i've been told they will be venting gas in preparation of pressure testing that will start next week. now, within the last half-hour we've moved and the reason we've done that is because gas line 132-a, which pg&e is ent having, is a feeder line and it connects with line 132. if gas line 132 sounds familiar, it should, it's the same line that runs up the peninsula and exploded in san bruno last fall. a few weeks ago, pg&e held a meeting and they alerted neighbors that they would be testing the pipe or venting the gas. the pipeline uns under businesses and homes from shoreline creek to the middle school. pg&e is still not sure who will pay for this testing. which is expected to cost around $100 million -- $00 billion. before the water testing next week, pg&e has to reduce gas from that line. mountain view and ant

ktvu jade hernandez joins us with what family members are saying about the 24 hour long search. jade. >> reporter: we checked in with the sheriffs office this morning. they told us the four month had been found hours ago. we don't know where and we don't know the circumstances surrounding the babies sis cory. and of course i want you to take a look at the little girl. she is four monday rammy gallego. when she woke up eight hours later the four monday was gone from her bassinet and from her home. the search immediately began. fag avenue family members began -- family members -- canine units came out and volunteers fanned out searching for the little girl. >> i was shocked and heartbroken. i felt like i was in a bad dream. i can't imagine to nurse my baby and not being there. >> reporter: now again we don't know the circumstances surrounding the four-month-old where she was found, if it was nearby, how the baby is. we hope to find out more from the contra costa family sheriffs office. they have tole me they -- they have told me they have been in contact with someone who can give
