the second job she held for a couple of years in the early 70's in jakarta. while i was interviewing her a man came into the room and introduced him as someone who had, it turned out, in his late fifties or early 60's at this point and had been a teenager's house boy in the house in jakarta where they had lived in 1970 and '71. his job had been to kind of keep an eye on the president. this guy, you know, he had been a teenager, come in from a small village to try and make some money to help his parents support his and her siblings. he remembered everything. a very impressionable stage. he remembered the hostel in detail, the whole cast of characters. what he did it with a young barack and what the relationships were like. i just stumbled on this person in a city of 16 million people. similarly i went out to the villages, the villages where she had worked with a man who had been sort of the person i was most close to, an indonesian man, a journalist toward the end of a life. he was willing to give me a couple of days to take me to a number of the places where

indonesia she then picked up her 6-year-old son and moved him to indonesia so then they moved in jakarta together the next four years so the first ten years he was with her the whole time then she made the decision because of the desire to get him a better education than she was able to get for him in indonesia at the time and the belief that he needed an english language education in order to have the opportunity to go to a great university she sent him back to hawaii by himself at age ten or maybe nine plus on the plane to live with his grandparents and go to the school he ultimately graduated from and she was as i said mary that time to an indonesian. she had a second child who was an indonesian husband so she stayed in indonesia initially, went back at christmas to be with him and joined him the following spring and live with him throughout middle school so there was a period of distance and then she was back with him and then in 1975 when he was i think in eighth grade and getting close to high school she had finished her graduate work, her coursework at hawaii and anthropology and
