the second job she held for a couple of years in the early 70's in jakarta. while i was interviewing her a man came into the room and introduced him as someone who had, it turned out, in his late fifties or early 60's at this point and had been a teenager's house boy in the house in jakarta where they had lived in 1970 and '71. his job had been to kind of keep an eye on the president. this guy, you know, he had been a teenager, come in from a small village to try and make some money to help his parents support his and her siblings. he remembered everything. a very impressionable stage. he remembered the hostel in detail, the whole cast of characters. what he did it with a young barack and what the relationships were like. i just stumbled on this person in a city of 16 million people. similarly i went out to the villages, the villages where she had worked with a man who had been sort of the person i was most close to, an indonesian man, a journalist toward the end of a life. he was willing to give me a couple of days to take me to a number of the places where
