it's on that ship on the way to jakarta.skip jeffrey thomas the editor in chief and managing editor of airlineratings.com. thank you for talking with us. this is such a significant turning point, both the black boxes now have been located. one of them on the way to the lab. how long do you predict it will likely be before we have some answers to what exactly happened to that doomed flight? >> rosemary it could be as soon as thursday or friday this week. if the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder when they bring it off the bottom later on today or tomorrow morning, as long as they haven't been damaged, then the download -- we should get some answers very quickly. it's extremely important in this particular investigation that we do get those answers, because the airbus a-320, there's over 6,000 of them flying around the world at the moment. they do about seven or eight flights a day. it's a real backbone of the world's aviation fleet. so it's very important we know as soon as possible. >> so much can be learned

our step vaessen joining us f from jakarta. thank you. >>> they have recovered the flight data recorder. what could this reveal? >> it includes dozens perhaps hundreds of parameters. flight data not during this flight but up to 25 or so hours prior to the time aircraft crashed. so if there was something occurring several flights before this fatal flight they may find something there. >> we're talking about the speed of the aircraft. it records it every several seconds. the mechanics of the aircraft. >> depending on how it's configured. it could be recorded several times a second. standards the industry are recording far far more data than similar devices 20 or 30 years ago. >> what are the chances the information on the flight data recorder could be wiped out? >> depends on whether the flight data recorder was damaged or operating at the time of the flight. that won't be known until they download the information. when that is downloaded, provided it is not scrambled in any way they will be able to get useful information out of

that box will be transported back to jakarta. that is where investigators will begin the process of downloading the data. the box looks like it is in relatively good condition. investigators who do this all the time one in particular in australia that i spoke with when the black boxes are in good condition, it is like plugging a usb stick in the computer. the cockpit voice recorder the investigators are saying they are 100% certain where it is but weather is causing problems in the java sea. the deep currents we have been talking about for the past week and a half preventing divers from getting in the water to take a look at it. of course the flight data recorder discovered under one of the wings of the plane from flight 8501. they are still looking for the fuselage. it is believed where most of the bodies of the passengers and crew remain at the point. families saying do not forget about us. one gentleman who lost seven relatives on the flight say i'm really thrilled about the news about the flight data recorder. i hope this cle

jakarta. >> joining me is the semiior lecturer in aviation studies at london's kingston university.nk you for joining us on the program. seth's picture dissenters pay a secure picture of the state of the aviation sector in indonesia. why are they threatening to revoke airasia's license? >> essentially, every commercial aircraft that takes off has to have a permit to fly through airspace of different countries. it seems here that what's happened is the airasia had a permit to fly through the singapore route every day essentially up until october. what's happened since then is the indonesian authorities have reduced that flight frequency of seven flights a week down four flights a week and it seems as if the airasia permit didn't allow it to continue flying on a sunday. there is a bit of after technical caveat here in that although the aircraft took off local time on a sunday actually international aviation works on british meantime and on greenitch meantime it was still saturday so there is a bit of a tech technical caveat there the investigators would have to look atnnich meantime,

it is on a ship and it will make its way officially they're jakarta. back to you. >> yeah. david, i want to ask you -- we heard reports from the innesian search and rescue agency who said that based upon initial analysis that it is possible the plane could have "exploded or broken up apart about landing on the water." can you walk us through what that mean? >> reporter: this gentleman came out last night and said the plane exploded when it hit the water. that is my assessment. he's not a transport safety investigator. we've talked to many of them. they say, look, it's clear the plane broke apart. let's not speculate. we have the tools to go in, get the data and figure out what happened. actually i talked to one of the senior investigators with the national transport safety committee a few hours ago. we're talking about the condition of the flight data recorder and what would happen next with the black box. here's what he told me. >> the condition is good. it's good. no fire no signature of fire, i mean. and then no cracks. downloading is very fast. let's say one hour. then

the recorder will be brought to jakarta and it will all be investigated right here and people hope here a few weeks to a few months, more will be clear about what exactly has happened during that fatal flight. we only know that the pilot in the last minute asked to increase altitude and then all contact was lost and it crashed in to the sea. both of these pieces of equipment should give us more clearance about the actual cause of the crash during bad weather conditions that fatal sunday morning. >>> and the school that was the site of one of the worst attacks in pakistan's history has reopened. 150 people, mostly children were killed when taliban gunmen storm the army public school in december. wall have his now been raised and electronic fencing added to boost security. many other schools around pakistan though, have installed security measures that are similar. kamal has more. >> reporter: although the government has reonly the schools across pakistan, there is apprehension that there will be more deadly attacks like the one that took place on december 16th, lead to go 150 killed incl

david molko tracking the latest from jakarta, indonesia.d. >> reporter: christine, that is the crucial bit. not seeing it with their own eyes or photos. the information about the fuselage the main piece of wreckage from the search and operations director mr. cipriati. he has been speaking on camera in front of military briefings over the past couple of weeks. he is starting to walk back some of what he told cnn earlier. earlier, he said divers in the water located the fuselage. he specified in english the main body of the plane. the fuselage. now he is saying it is appears one of the search ships picked up the fuselage via some scanner on the bottom or another way of images. christine, mixed signals from officials. this one disheartening because of the sensitivity of this here. more than 100 families still waiting for news of their loved ones. 48 bodies recovered. the rest believed to be with that main wreckage. families, of course, waiting for news of their loved ones. certainly at this point, there is nothing confirmed by this official. s

we are joined from jakarta, indonesia. what's the search plan for today? >> the plan is to try to find and continue to search for big sections of the plane. the reason for that andersen is because there is a working assumption here from jakarta, headquarters, there may bea number of passengers in big sections of the planes. they're zeroing in on two images. hard to make out. you can see they're brown. in the brown sections there are those light sections. those light sections the, the government here believes that they may be parts of the plane. the emphasis here is on may. they don't know if it is ogs underogs -- if it is ocean junk. wreckage. garbage. they are interested in that. they want to got to two sections and figure out if that is the plane. the key of course anderson not just finding more bodies. but understanding what happened that will be held inside the black boxes. >> yeah going to take time. thank you very much. we want to focus now on the danger searchers and divers have been facing. paula hancocks was on board the ship and now joins back on

now this report from jakarta. >> reporter: a major breakthrough in the search to find some answers as to why the air asia plane crashed into the java sea. but since the data recorder dug out from the bottom of the sea, beneath the plane's wing. the machine records whether the plane stalled during its flight how much fuel it had, and what altitude it was flying at. the flight data recorder will now be handed to indonesia's aircraft investigators, who will be scouring the data on it to figure out why the plane crashed. >> this is my experience. we'll see today or tonight or tomorrow. >> reporter: but difrs s divers are still searching for the cockpit voice recorder. officials believe they know where it is based on strong signals the box is emitting but there's no visual identification of it. contained in the cockpit voice recorder, the conversations of those on board moments before the plane went down. these details will be invaluable to the relatives of those on board the ill-fated flight. it's now been two weeks since the air asia plane plunged into the java sea, killing all 162 peopl

kyung lah in jakarta for us, thank you. let's bring in cnn's paula hancocks. she's right there on the indonesian coast watching what's going on. what are you picking up over there, paula? >> wolf new information is coming out that's meteorological officials here in indonesia say that the airasia officials didn't actually pick up the meteorological report ahead of the flight. they didn't pick them up in person ahead of flight 8501. this doesn't violate any policies at this point. but it does mean according to meteorologists that they missed the opportunity to talk to them face to face so they could potentially tell them about any dangers that may be ahead in the atmosphere and the weather for that flight. it doesn't appear as though airasia has changed its policy since the accident. it appears they haven't actually gone in person to pick up that information. but airasia officials say there is actually more useful and easier information to look at the electronic version of this weather report. so this is information coming in to us very interesting and something

cnn's kyung lah is joining us from jakarta right now.d hearing over there, kyung? >> reporter: wolf what we're seeing here is the investigative part of this story really beginning to ramp up. here in the capital, there are two laboratories that we are aware of one is the dna lab. you just heard gary talking about the painstaking search for remains. this is going to be the part of the lab that takes it a step further, bodies that cannot be identified. the lab will take care of that but the other part is the debris lab. what's going to be happening there is that all the wreckage that is found at sea is going to be brought to this laboratory parts of the plane are going to be rebuilt. they're going to try to reconstruct the plane and figure out exactly what took this plane down and, of course that critical element of the debris lab will be recovering the so-called black boxes, the flight data recorder the cockpit voice recorders. that wolf will be the key that investigators are hoping will tell them what brought this plane down whether wirt

we have david molko with more from jakarta. >> reporter: a delicate operation, christine.in the water for the second day. officials hoping they will have better luck than thursday. under water visibility limiting them from getting close to the fuselage. not a lot of communication coming from the search zone this afternoon. that could be a good sign. that could mean divers are able to get close or get inside. christine, we have been talking about it for the past two and a half weeks here. the weather deciding the pace of the search. in some sense, it is extraordinary that searchers have been able to find what they have in last 20 days. two black boxes. the tail section of the plane. now the fuselage. we know from earlier last week when divers were down with the tail trying to rig up ropes and straps and slings to raise it to the surface, they described conditions down there. they said they were fluttering like flags hanging on to the ropes. i spoke to an official to see if the section is more complicated. they say it is pretty straight forward as long as conditions cooperat
