let's turn now to jake tapper, who is there with the president tonight in tucson. jake? >> reporter: good evening, diane. well, president obama touched down here in tucson not long ago, and the first stop for him was the hospitals where he visited with congresswoman giffords, her husband and other victims of the tragedy. president obama was working on his speech he's about to deliver throughout the night. and was even working on it on air force one as he flew here to tucson. white house officials say these off the cuff comments from earlier this week reflect how the president is thinking about the tragedy and tonight's address. >> as president of the united states, but also as a father, obviously, i'm spending a lot of time just thinking about the families and reaching out to them. >> reporter: the president has also been thinking about and reaching out to the many heroes. >> part of what i think that speaks to is the best of america. even in the face of such mindless violence. >> reporter: as with his previous presidential speeches, this one has gone through many edits.

let's bring in jake tapper. happy new year. we knew some of the newly elected tea party republicans haven't always seen eye to eye with the republican establishment. have you seen any signs of reluctance yet? >> yes, many of them wary of republican establishment figures as they were of democratic figures, but since the midterm elections, boehner was elected unanimously to the speaker position, and it's expected he will do a pretty good job of keeping them in line, at least in the short-term. >> we saw many of the tea party candidates campaign on the deficit and the debt. how much the country borrows. do you see this as one of the fault lines as we head into the new year? >> the big fault line is to raise the ceiling of the debt. it's now $3 trillion. he's going to need to have republicans fall in line to lift the debt ceiling to a higher number, and many candidates affiliated with the tea party say they will not do so. that will be a big issue in the months ahead. >> and jake will have much more on "this week" tomorrow morning,

in the meantime, we want to bring in jake tapper. you have been reporting on what the white house is trying to convey to president mubarak the last 24 hours. what have you learned? >> that's right, the white house has been criticized for being one step behind everything going on. but white house officials tell me that they're trying to convey to the egyptian leader three things in general in terms of the economic, political, and social reforms. they want him to undertake as soon as possible. first of all, political reforms. a good first step would be meeting with the political opposition parties and civil society groups, political reformers. second, respecting the freedom of information. right now, i understand that cell phones are working, but there still are some glitches when it comes to the internet. they need to lift that blockage of the internet. and lastly is that emergency law lifting the emergency law, repealing it. that law has been in effect since 1967 and allowed the egyptian government to disrespect civil liberties and b
