i'm jake tapper. it is a heated showdown. the obama administration versus the government of north carolina. the issue is complicated, but it does deal with transgender americans and their rights. any minute, we're going to hear from attorney general loretta lynch on this very divisive issue. on friday, the obama administration demanded that north carolina address what the justice department calls discrimination, pure and simple. this was a reference to the state's so-called bathroom law. the law would mean that transgender individuals would have to use public restrooms that correspond with the sex on their birth certificate, not with the gender with which they identify today. earlier today the governor of north carolina responded to the obama administration. >> this caused major privacy concerns about males entering female facilities or females entering male facilities. >> the feds shot back filing a countersuit against north carolina just minutes ago. and when the attorney general comes to the podium

i'm jake tapper.nning new concerns of saudi arabia's alleged ties to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. one of the former members of the 9/11 commission john layman now says that the report that eventually said that there was no evidence turned up of direct involvement in the attacks by the government or senior officials of saudi arabia, he says that came down to semantics and circumstantial evidence. of course, this comes at a time of tense talking about whether to release the full congressional report. and the infamous 28 pages which some say contains evidence of direct ties between saudi officials and the al qaeda terrorists. joining me now, jim sciutto. you spoke with mr. layman. what did he have to say? >> i spoke with him early this morning and he said when you look at the 28 pages, to be clear, from an earlier congressional report and not the 9/11 commission itself, and there n there at least evidence, not conclusions, evidence as of many as six saudi individuals in the u.s. at the time of the attacks

i'm jake tapper. what a day it has been. just two hours of polls closing in indiana and the stakes could not be higher in the republican race for the presidential nomination. if ted cruz and anti-trump forces cannot stop trump in the hoosier state they may not be able to stop him at all. trump and cruz engaged in a bitter and stunning exchange today. every time you think this race cannot get any more ludicrous, it does. it started this morning when trump cited a bizarre and uncorroborated report -- i use the term report loosely -- in the "national enquirer," the supermarket tabloid, which has endorsed trump and published by a friend of trump launching smear after smear against cruz and his family. think story shows a photograph from 1963, with a man soon to be standing with jfk assassin. it suggests the man is cruz's father, raphael. the problem is there's no proof na the photograph is cruzs. dad and cruz's dad says it's not him. mr. trump called in to the fox morning show and said the following -- >>
