i'm jake tapper.out of a historic moment for space travel. billionaire richard branson has just emerged from his spacecraft after successfully traveling to the edge of space. let me bring back my panel here. miles, now the ball appears to be in the court of jeff bezos. his flight is now just nine days away. how will that be different from what we saw today? >> well, it's a little different look for sure, jake. he's got the more traditional capsule and rocket approach. it's not the mother ship which separates from the rocket at altitude. it's also completely autonomous. there will be no pilot on board, just the passengers, and that's kind of interesting. one of the things that's worth pointing out is the bezos approach, the blue origin approach, does have a crew escape system. in other words, the capsule can be fired away from the rocket stack. if something goes wrong as they're flying toward the edge of space. so there is a level of safety there that, frankly, isn't available in the virgin galactic fl

i'm jake tapper.n infrastructure bill could face another test tomorrow after republican senators sank a key procedural vote on the $1.2 trillion agreement last week despite the handshakes at the white house a few weeks ago. the bill is not finished and key sticking points remain. joining us to discuss, the leading ranking member on the banking committee, senator pat toomey. negotiators are working through the weekend to try to resolve these issues in the bipartisan infrastructure compromise. if this group reaches an agreement by tomorrow, will you vote to begin debate on the lags, just to invoke cloture and allow debate to proceed? >> it does depend on what's in the bill, jake. the reason that the procedural motion was defeated last week is because we were asked to vote on something that truly did not exist. most senators think there's a good idea for there to be legislation before you actually vote on legislation, including voting to proceed to it. i'm totally open to examining it closely. and if it'

i'm jake tapper.nd we begin today in the health lead where the summer covid surge is showing no signs of slowing. right now the united states is averaging about 35,000 new cases a day, which is almost up 50% from last week, 50%. and the cdc director today said the more contagious delta variant accounts for more than 80% of those cases. it appears that the united states of america is going backwards when it comes to the pandemic. the debate over mask mandates has returned. investors are worried that the resurgence will threaten the economic recovery. now, disinformation is one of the main problems. and while it's not just a problem of maga resistance to the vaccine, it is also just empirically true partisan politics and the media spewing lies about the vaccine, that is getting in the way of science and health. 47% of republicans said they were not likely to get vaccinated. that compares with just 6% of democrats, which brings us to this latest twist in the misinformation battle after spending months an

but i would differ with with jake on this point. i think it's virtually impossible to guarantee a process that would be widely viewed as credible absence, some sort of external internationally supported process. before we even get to election though, we really should be talking about some kind of stabilization mechanism to keep the peace on the ground. i think there is a very high propensity for widespread political violence. gangs are armed to the teeth, the police have been over run in recent months by games. there have been a number of gruesome killings of police officers. we just can't really capture the full extent of the political crisis. that as jake rightly notes have been ongoing for some time, so before we can get to talk of haiti solving a political future, which of course it must in order for it to be tenable and sustainable in the long term. we need as stabilisation aspect to calm elements on the grounds that kids can go to school for the businesses can reopen the airport, the border remain closed and we need to investi

>> yeah, definitely, jake. what we're seeing anecdotally from the front lines is that there is a very, very small group of anti-vaxxers that have taken up much of the sphere of conversation. but the reality is that if we can talk to our patients, which is what we've done through the this is our shot campaign, myself, and other doctors, we've come together to mobilize doctors. we're noticing that nine out of ten of our patients, they want to do the right thing for themselves and their families. although there is a lot of attention on the anti-vax side of things, most patients want reassurance. they want data, and they want to do what's right to protect themselves. and so we're really trying to have as many of those conversations and giving people the tools, knowledge, and skills to disarm the misinformation, because that has -- we know vaccine misinformation is lethal, and we know it leads to a -- percent decrease. but we're doing it one conversation at a time one patient at a time. >> all right, doctor, thanks

i'm jake tapper. we start today with our health lead, and a surprising and dismaying move to stop all vaccine outreach to children despite the growing number of coronavirus cases among the unvaccinated. the decision made by tennessee health officials just one day after firing their vaccine chief because she tried to promote shots for teenagers. the move coming as the covid situation in the united states continues to get worse, not just in tennessee but across the country. the u.s. now averaging roughly 24,000 new cases per day. that's a 75% jump from last week. and a whopping 93% spike from two weeks ago while vaccination rates continue to go way down. 41% down from just last week. a big chunk of this problem is that far too many republican leaders in the united states have decided to spew what conservative writer joanna goldberg calls a, quote, geyser of paranoia. they reject science, specifically, the science that created the very vaccines that then president trump helped to fund and create through

jake beat susan wright. what do we think about what this says about trump's power in terms of endorsements, or is this an anomaly because the club for growth talked him into it at the last minute and convinced him that she was going to win. >> the turn out was only like 39,000 people. it was very low. and trump only won that district i believe by 3% in 2020. so this one's a little murkier. i'm watching ohio 15 next week, the special election for steve styver. it dollars a very wide field. i think that will give us more answers than perhaps this particular. donald trump doesn't have a perfect record when it comes to endorsements. he did not endorse lauren boebert. he endorsed their opponents. and those folks won anyways and are now in congress. so his record's not perfect. the danger for a republican is not will somebody else in my race get the trump endorsement. trump can use his megaphone to sink you more than he can use his megaphone to save you. >> thanks to everyone. really appreciate it. >> later we're

>> reporter: she has a warning for everyone, jake.ere this patient was, we visited that area today. the nurse told me last week they had one patient. this week every single room is filled with covid patients. some have two patients. the hospital telling us that they have seen numbers double in just the last week, and there is clear concern and a lot of frustration. so let's start with the concern. the director of infection prevention tells me that they are seeing cases rise very fast that is being driven by the highly contagious delta variant. if they continue the way they are going now, it'll just be a matter of days before they reach capacity and have staffing shortages not just because of burnout but also because of unvaccinated staff. now, as far as the frustration goes, i can really see that coming from the nurses who said they felt like they were in the clear, and now they're going right back to some of those peak numbers that they saw earlier in the pandemic. a lot of those patients, as you mentioned, are unvaccinated. 90% unva

jake, good morning to you.this january 6th select committee, can you break down what is going to be the public messaging to basically stay opposed to it? >> well, good morning, jacob. a few thoughts. there's going to be nobody on this committee, nobody at these hearings who's going to be defending donald trump or the republican, the modern republican party. i mean it's going to be a very tricky thing for kevin mccarthy. he has a very bad hand. he's been outmaneuvered by nancy pelosi for several months. he rejected the committee. kevin mccarthy rejected it and senate republicans rejected the committee that gave republicans equal power to democrats, so, you know, they had the opportunity to be involved here. they had the opportunity to investigate in a way that they wanted to, that they said they wanted to, and they didn't do that. >> if they set up what they're threatening to set up is sort of a parallel shadow republican committee, what type of authority or teeth if any at all would that have? >> zero. they hav
