i'm jake tapper. we start with breaking news. a dramatic sell-off on wall street as investors freak out over inflation and the distinct possibility of the u.s. economy sliding into a recession. the dow industrials lost more than 1100 points, the broader s&p 500 and nasdaq also falling sharply. let's get right to cnn's matt egan. matt, what specifically sparked today's sell-off? >> well, the big fear is that inflation is so high that it's starting to eat into corporate profits. retail giant target gave investors a scare by reporting a stunning drop in earnings, largely because of supply chain turmoil and rising costs. target lost 25% of its value today alone. its worst day since black monday in 1987. this comes a day after walmart sounded the inflation alarm, also suffering its worst day since 1987. the big concern is companies are having trouble passing along higher costs consumers and that perhaps corporate profitability has peaked. that's normally something you only see during big economic slowdowns

i'm jake tapper. we start today with our politics lead and the seismic health, political, and legal news. a document obtained by politico and confirmed as authentic by the u.s. supreme court reveals that the highest court in the land appears poised to overturn roe v. wade. nearly 50 years after that case legalized abortion in the united states. in this draft opinion, five conservative justices, samuel alito, clarence thomas, neil gorsuch, brett kavanaugh, and amy coney barrett argue in favor of overturning roe v. wade's holding of a woman's federal constitutional right to an abortion. the u.s. supreme court underlined in a statement today that this document is not a final decision by the court or a final position by any justice. it was circulated amongst the court at the beginning of february. the final decision is expected in june. democratic leaders across the country attacked the potential decision today as undermining fundamental rights to individual health care. >> i feel really angry about this.

i'm jake tapper. we start with our world lead and top white house advisers caught off guard by this response from president biden when he was asked in a news conference in tokyo if the u.s. would be willing to foe further than it has with ukraine to help taiwan in the event of an invasion. >> you didn't want to get involved in the ukraine conflict militarily for obvious reasons. are you willing to get involved militarily to defend taiwan if it comes to that? >> yes. >> you are? >> that's the commitment we made. >> now, president biden didn't specify what he meant by militarily, but the question defined the term as the u.s. military getting directly involved as it has not done in ukraine, to which biden said yes. the white house rushed to clarify, saying that the biden administration would send weapons, not troops, to help taiwan. but it's a far cry from the delicacy and ambiguity we usually see from u.s. officials when they talk about china and taiwan. this is, we should note, the third time in recent

jake? >> the legislation has measures in it that would punish doctors who provide any abortion. what does that entail? >> yeah, in addition to defining a pregnancy is, it also states that essentially a private citizen could sue an abortion provider when they knowingly provide an abortion or induce an abortion. and so what's going to happen here is that these abortion providers will be punished and could be held accountable legally, and that will have huge implications, as well. they're looking at what they can do in other states. that's why planned parenthood is looking at the nearby states to see if that's what they're going to do, move those abortions to other states, because they will not be able to happen in oklahoma once this is signed. >> the bill does include something of an exception for rape and incest, but there's a little bit of a catch to it, right? tell us about that. >> yeah, you have to report that rape to law enforcement before you can be -- or essentially be able to qualify
