more on this, joined by jake sherman, politico's senior writer. e we get to medicaid, let's start with this news of the day, potential deal on immigration. what are your sources telling you about the likelihood of a deal? >> i think politico is reporting or my colleague is reporting on twitter that the six senators have come to an agreement but let's be clear about what that means. six people are six people, right. so they need the other 94 people in the senate or at least some good majority of those people to agree to it. they need the leadership to agree to it. john cornyn recently said he hadn't seen the deal and people should share it. and then the big hurdle which is the house of representatives where paul ryan and other republican leaders are going to be under tremendous pressure to resist anything that sniffs of not conservative enough, so that's going to be the big sticking point over the next couple days. i want to keep this in mind because there's a government funding deadline next week about a week from -- eight days from today. the gove

politico senior writer jake sherman joins me. jake, the proposal didn't have much of a chance. we knew the white house didn't like it. at this point it's not even like it can get reshaped. for sarah huckabee sanders to say doa, that's suv one. >> listen, we're only a couple of days, again, two weeks from the government shutting down once again. mitch mcconnell has promised some sort of action on immigration reform on the senate floor in that time frame. so senators are meeting. they're trying to figure out if there is a pathway forward. it doesn't look good for many reasons. and let's start with the fact that the president and chuck schumer disagree on whether there will be a wall on the border. the president says there needs to be. chuck schumer says no. let's forget the senate. the house, which is the more conservative of the two chambers, is never going to accept something that the senate produces on a bipartisan basis. i don't want to say never, but unlikely. i've had people come to me over the last couple of weeks saying anything that's acceptable to unanimous see pel nanc

kasie hunt is on capitol hill and with me jake sherman. what was the white house trying to do there by allowing cameras to watch that entire time? >> reporter: 55 minutes. it wasn't the full meeting because after the cameras left the lawmakers stayed behind closed doors just a little bit longer before speaking with us. i think it was certainly intended to show that president trump is working to try to get something done on immigration, on apparently comprehensive immigration reform, apparently on daca, the program that protects those undocumented immigrants brought here when they were younger to this country. we sort of discussed the amazing optics in that. of course, remember there were still cameras in the room. i'm sure no lawmaker forgot that they were being watched on tape during this whole thing. there were moments where you saw both sides basically really lay out what they wanted. kevin mccarthy saying we definitely want border security. david purdue saying we want a deal with chain migration. president trump was saying i want you g

also with me, ashley parker of "the washington post" and jake sherman of politico. kasie, it was fascinating to watch that hearing today and to watch kerstin nielskne kir stin explain what words were spoken. it seems like everybody knew what words were spoken and she was dancing around them. >> reporter: she was, yes, put into a difficult position, repeatedly, by those senators. and cory booker, i talked to him after the hearing. he stopped short of saying that he thought that she was lying to the committee, but suffice it to say, it strain eed believabilit to think that she didn't or couldn't remember what was happen. and that was the sentiment that many senators conveyed to me after the meeting. i think the question now is, where does this go from here? lindsey graham referred to this entire -- the events of the last few days as an s-show. and he questioned what exactly happened to paycheck the president change his mind. he compared the way the president was in that open meeting that we saw last tuesday, to the way that he approached this private meeting, and grah
