joining us now co-founder of punch bowl news, jake sherman. he's an msnbc political contributor and probably not getting much sleep these days. jake, thanks for joining us this morning, so let's start with the government shutten down. give us an update on that, and give us an update on mccarthy's hold on power. >> i'll give an update on the government funding first which is government is in peril. the story is this. the senate is working on a bipartisan stop gap which is going to come to a vote at some point today, not today but sunday, monday, something like that depending on who gives up time and how they collapse time in the senate, the time needed to pass a bill. mccarthy has rejected that. house republicans have rejected that. they've all rejected that. that will was going to probably go nowhere in the house. so the question is two fold. number one, mccarthy is going to put a stop gap on the floor today. we'll have to see. maybe there's some momentum now they passed three of their four bills last night. maybe they'll give mccarthy a break,

the primary will be the show to watch in utah going forward. >> garrett haake, jake sherman, gentlemenank you very much. >>> turning now to fulton county, d.a. fani willis reiterated again that she does want to try all 19 codefendants at the same time. in a new filing, she argued that breaking the case up would create, quote, enormous strain on her office. with october 23rd, the trial courage scheduled with two codefendants out there, and it's coming up fast, what is judge mcafee going to do? joining us now is nbc news legal analyst and former federal prosecutor paul butler. she wants all 19 there. judge mcafee has said in a televised hearing, we all watched him, that logistically that sounds insane. he didn't use the word insane, but his tone of voice seemed to imply it. is there any way that fani willis is going to get this, and if not, why is she still continuing to say this is what she needs. >> he didn't say, but the judge meant insane. it's unlikely that all 19 defendants would be tried this year or even next year. the case is too complicated and the defendants would have legitim

joining us now is "punch bowl news" cofounder jake sherman. i mangled that at the top.lain the meeting at 4:00 p.m., the king and queen of the hill. >> there's a lot going on. it's a fast moving story at this point. this meeting was noticed a couple of hours ago. here's the lay of the land. the house floor is effectively paralyzed. kevin mccarthy, the speaker cannot move defense spending bills. he can not move hardly anything because of these holdouts, conservative holdouts who want him to lower federal spending. he's trying to find a way out o it. one thing they have discussed, we reported this afternoon, a mechanism called queen of the hill or king of the hill, you didn't mangle it that badly, but basically what it means, put a bunch of proposals on the floor, see which one gets the most votes and that goes to the senate. that's one option. another option being discussed is a couple senior house republicans about this. they want to try, good luck to them. they want to try to reframe this debate, and make this about border security. we're kind of far down the road, but

there's a report from jake sherman she woulthey would take ukraine money out. >> reporter: they can tryake it out and the senate will put it back in that's part of the problem here. in fact, in this defense bill, there's not even what you would call typical ukraine aid there's concern among some members like marjorie taylor greene that there's other money in here appropriated for other means that's dressed up as dollars that will be back channelled to ukraine. there's layers to this that would get one vote but perhaps loose others the defense bill is almost a lower priority they need to prove they can pass something. the defense bill will not keep the government open. they need something more broad based to extend government funding for a week or 30 days or six weeks or else the lights turn off overnight into next weekend. once the shutdown starts, it's harder to see how they get out of it than to see how they could avoid it now >> it's like a strike. how do you get out of it there's news on that thanks for all the work from capitol hill >>> there's a possibility a deal could be in the

intelligence correspondent, ken dilanian, and "punch bowl news" cofounder and msnbc political contribute jake sherman. there are 52 hours or so before the government shuts down. is there anything else happening that we're not currently watching on television? >> no, not really. there are a couple of things worth noting. number one, the senate is trying its best to cobble together a border security package to ride alongside their short-term stopgap bill. now, why are they doing that? they're doing that because house republicans say they need border security and a stopgap measure. this is going to be a herculean task, katy. absolutely herculean, to find something that could pass the senate and pass the house. we're not only talking about border money. we're talking about reworking border policy. that's very difficult to do in such a short period of time. so that's what's happening right now in the senate. the house is voting on four spending bills tonight. all of them might go down. they might not be able to pass any of these bills, and then speaker kevin mccarthy will move to pass his own short-term b

joining us is jake sherman. the clock is ticking.il next week. let's start with the basics. house and senate on two very different pages when it comes to government funding. the house has cut more than $100 billion from the deal that speaker kevin mccarthy cut with joe biden. now you're beginning to hear from house republicans like marjorie taylor greene that if they don't get an impeachment inquiry in the next two or three weeks, they will not vote to fund the government. so if you're playing the odds, you have to put it well above 50% that the government is going to shut down sometime between now and the end of the year. kevin mccarthy wants to extend government funding until november. but this is not the only issue. faa, farm bill, aid to ukraine, disaster relief, all of them are tied together. the farm bill and the faa both expire september 30th. so we're in what can only be described as an incredibly messy legislative push to the end of this month. >> with the senate in session, a lot of questions about senate minority leader mi

joining us with more punch bowl news is jake sherman good morning to you.o you handle that after i read your newsletter this morning? we should talk about the ukraine piece of the aid that is a sticking point >> andrew, the senate has been on the sidelines so far with the government funding fight is starting to move on their own stop-gap measure they are trying to keep that very clean meaning little or no ukraine funding for 45 days. a little bit of disaster relief. the only question is can kevin mccarthy who promised to fund the border and institute border policies and cut spending. can he put that on the floor the question is if senate passes this bill is should he upset the right flank of his conference to avert a government shutdown? if he puts this on the floor, he risks one of those snap votes on his leadership which would be very difficult for him i'm not saying he can't beat it, but they could challenge his speakership. that would be tough for mccarthy as we tick toward sunday, andrew, sunday night, the government shut shuts down. we will speak to m
