joining us now from capitol hill is jake sherman, co-founder of punchbowl news and an msnbc contributorle budget thing first. where do things stand there? >> well, the speaker said, as you noted, that he's got the republicans plan to mark up, which means consider in committee a budget resolution as early as thursday. he said it's going to happen thursday. the only problem is we don't even know what that's going to look like. and this budget resolution is planning to cut between 1 trillion and 2.5 trillion in government outlays and will have huge impacts across the government, and also will plan to extend the trump era, the 2017 tax cuts, in perpetuity, permanently. that's going to cost upwards of $5 trillion. we haven't seen anything here. and the speaker says it's going to be out tonight. they've been saying that now for a couple of weeks, so we'll have to see if that comes to fruition. on top of that, if you if you put this all together, this is the bulk of the trump agenda right here. this is the everything that trump wants done legislatively. tax cuts, energy policy, border policy a

jake sherman, we're going to go to yasmin in a second. we're having some audio difficulties with her. so, jake, i'm going to begin with you on this. it was a statement that he had to have known would have gotten a giant reaction, not just here at home, not just on capitol hill, but around the world. what i found most interesting about the reaction, though, is that the republican party has done so little to push back on donald trump since he won reelection, certainly in the past two and a half weeks. all of his nominees seem to be going through. but yet on this issue, you are getting some notable pushback. we're going to put some of it on the screen for you. there's rand paul saying, what are we doing? this is not what you campaigned on. lindsey graham saying it's going to be problematic. but then again, he's also saying he's going to keep an open mind. what is the reaction on capitol hill to this? is there any anything notable that you've been able to uncover? >> katie, the best. >> quote. >> you didn't even read. >> thom tillis. there mig

jake sherman is co-founder of punchbowl news and an msnbc political contributor. mark mckinnon is back with me as well. vaughn, how realistic is this idea of using the threat of a government shutdown to force the administration, i don't know, into some kind of negotiation. how does this fit into democrats overall plan? >> right. okay. march 14th is when government funding expires. that is just about one month away here. and for democrats, i'm sure they're in the minority in the house and the senate. but look, house republicans can only afford to lose one vote on any legislation moving forward, including on whether it be a continuing resolution, a budget or debt ceiling extension. but when you're looking at the senate, they've got to get 60 votes. they're going to need democrats here. and that is where you saw senator schumer in a letter to colleagues just a few moments ago, stating that, in fact, that they are going to seek on an array of fronts to not only support government workers who come out as whistleblowers, but also essentially sign on to briefs for litiga
