i'm jake tapper. we're going to begin today with yet another deadly terrorist attack. this one by isis eerily similar to paris, massive bomb explosions and violent shootout rocked indonesia's capital city of jakarta this morning. it all began when one of the terrorists detonated a suicide bomb near a starbucks in a bustling shopping district in jakar jakarta. that's an area usually packed with tourists from around the world. and then in an alarmingly coordinated manner other terrorists launched a gun battle with police. at least two civilians died in this attack. 24 others were injured. let's now go to cnn senior international correspondent ivan watson who is in jakarta, indonesia, for us live. ivan, what's the latest information you're getting there on the scene? >> reporter: well, the police say that all of the attackers, there were five of them, they all died after the initial attack began here at this starbucks and then it kind of fanned out through this square. i'm going to spin right around here

i'm jake tapper. three dangerous and possibly armed criminals made a dramatic escape from a maximum security jail in california over the weekend. the orange county sheriff says they cut through steel bars and made their way through plumbing tunnels to the to the roof and then climbed down five stories using a makeshift rope. since disappearing last friday, these three inmates, one of whom has a previous homicide conviction and is accused of castrating a man, the others have reported vietnamese gang ties, authorities have no idea where the three are. let's bring in paul from los angeles. paul, how similar is this to the two convicted murderers who escaped from the state prison in new york last summer? >> well, jake, it's similar in this. it was very elaborate. it involved crawling and hacking through metal and somehow getting ahold of equipment that would allow them to cut this metal. it's different in these ways. basically there was a fight staged that delayed the head count at this jail which gave th

i'm jake tapper. dr. carson is the guy who spent new year's eve hoping things would turn around for him in 2016. last week five carson staffers quit after announcing staffing changes were in the works and it all played out as a very public spat. when i sat down today with dr. carson and his new campaign chairman retired general manager bob dees in their virginia campaign headquarters, i asked about the campaign's messy shakeup. what wasn't happening that needed to have been happening? >> operations. the ability to execute. there's a special talent involved in execution. and a lot of people in politics, in medicine, in law -- in everything, don't have that ability. doesn't mean they're not good people. it means you need to add that in. >> one of the things that we've heard in criticisms from people who used to be running your campaign, barry bennett and others, is the way that the staff changes were announced don't speak well of your management style. their criticisms, not mine. what do you say to that

i'm jake tapper. president obama said he'll leave a seat empty at tuesday night's state of the union address to mark the victims of gun violence. this follows the president's executive actions to expand background checks. that move inspired ted cruz to post this photo shopped image of obama on his website declaring, quote, obama wants your guns. i asked cruz about this in our exclusive skboouf on board his bus tour of iowa. gun control, restrictions on gun ownership, gun grabbing as you called it in the e-mail, a lot of that in the news these days and a lot of questions about background checks. who should be able to buy a gun who should not. do you think somebody who has been convicted of domestic abuse against a partner or girlfriend/boyfriend should that person be legally allowed to buy a firearm? that's an issue that is debated a lot. >> well, it's existing law if a domestic violence abuse you're not eligible to buy a firearm. that's existing law. i mentioned my obligation as president is to enforc
