i'm jake tapper. we begin with the politics lead. president trump today is once again claiming he will pursue expanding, quote, meaningful and intelligent back ground checks for gun sales as he has before in the past in the immediate aftermath of mass shootings in the u.s. such as after the massacre in parkland, florida, last year for example. president trump on his way to vacation at his golf club in new jersey said he is talking to congressional leaders including mitch mcconnell who the president claims is, quote, totally on board with this plan. though mcconnell's spokesperson almost immediately disputed that telling cnn mcconnell did not endorse anything in his conversation with president trump. the president has of course promised action on expanding background checks before. he has never followed through. and we should note earlier this year even threatened the president, threatened to veto two bills passed by the democratic-led house to strengthen background checks. pamela brown has more on the president repeating the congress

i'm jake tapper. we begin with breaking news in the money lead. a huge loss on wall street.ow closing in a moment down -- you hear the bell there, down around 750 points amid an escalation in the u.s./china trade war. alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange. allison, why? what prompted this big drop. >> because of an escalation in the tit-for-tat trade war why we saw the massive losses in the stock market. overnight the latest salvo from china devaluing the yuan and the currency against the dollar and a worry there could be a global currency war on top of the trade war. now china is saying this wasn't a deliberate move. but many believe it is in retaliation for president trump promising to slap a 10% tariff on the final $300 billion in chinese goods. that tariff going into effect on september 1st. it is something that white house advisers had tried to get the president not to do because especially of that timing, jake. it is

this is what they're telling jake tapper. and while dhs officials wanted to surge these resources to combat this threat, they really had a lack of support from the white house, and it's really evidenced in this 20 plus page report, the national counter terrorism strategy. it was released by the white house just about a year ago last fall. in that 20 plus page report it really focuses on the threat from islamist terrorists. it doesn't in fact mention white supremacy at all. it does mention domestic terrorism just twice, but it doesn't really go into detail here, and some of the senior officials that jake had been talking to said that, you know, the president of course is reluctant to recognize the threat from white supremacists and they put it this way of saying you know it will trigger it boss if it's something that was included in this broad report. so, right, the concern is there from dhs officials, however it's not being truly recognized or prioritized by the white house. you know, a senior administration official, though,
