i'm jake tapper. and we start in the politics lead. the president firing his national security adviser john bolton. the two have a long, well-documented history of disagreeing on matters up to today when the two had different takes on how bolton ended up on the wrong side of the white house fence. the president tweeting in part, quote, i informed john bolton last night that his sfrss are no longer needed at the white house. i disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions. according to john bolton's tweet which came 12 minutes later, quote, i offered to resign last night and president trump said let's talk about it tomorrow. the news came just before a white house briefing that boltan was scheduled to attend. secretary of state mike pompeo and steve mnuchin who both reportedly clashed with bolton behind the scenes were notably all smiles at this briefing. a source close to the administration tells me that bolton's exit is the result of, quote, an administration with dysfunctional processes and bureaucracy that attracts people width to

i'm jake tapper. we begin with breaking news. house democrats right now holding their first impeachment inquiry and it has gotten ugly fast. testifying today is former trump campaign manager corey lewandowksi who at the direction of the white house is refusing to answer most questions. lewandowski never worked in the white house. which makes the white house claim of executive privilege quite questionable according to legal scholars. democrats want him to talk about meetings with the president described in the mueller report. including one in which the president told lewandowski to order the attorney general jeff sessions to say publicly that the special counsel investigation was not fair and to announce that sessions would be instructing mueller to refocus the investigation to look at future elections. lewandowski is doing everything he can to frustrate the democrats seeking his testimony. cnn's manu raju is on capitol hill. manu, what has lewandowski been able to see about the meetings he had with president trump? >> reporter: r

certainly think adam schiff's comments this morning on the state of the union, i think it was, with jake tapper that he does believe that we've crossed the rubicon, in a sense. he's been wary of impeachment in the past, and are the extent of reports suggesting they are, is this the rallying cry that democrats finally need to move forward with impeachment. however, i do think nancy pelosi's statement, as it has in the past, with many of these impeachable offenses that jerry nadler rallied around, she said this may be a new stage in our investigation. but once again, she went shy of calling for impeachment. so i do think it's up to democrats at this point in a political sense if they do believe this is something they want to pursue in terms of impeachment. they have to keep the public engaged, right, and the problem with the mueller probe is that because attorney general bill barr got the first word, it was in many ways the final word, that the president was totally exonerated. so in this specific case, democrats, i do thirng, are trying to learn from past mistakes and make sure the public stays
