jake: -- tell me about him.ake: yeah, clay was a texas kid i met in my first infantry platoon in the marine corps. i was pretty old for being having just enlisted, and he had taken kind of a wandering route to the marine corps himself after high school, going to a couple of colleges, dancing in and out of working at youth camps, spending some time on ski slopes as a ski bum. i wouldn't have necessarily a lot in common, but we had a similar maturity and so we just quickly clung onto one another, and very close friends very quickly. he was wounded early in our tour in iraq, and that was hard for both of us. for me to get my friend sent home, to see him wounded, and then for him to be home knowing that i was continuing daily missions and patrols in the deadliest province during the deadliest year of the war was just nerve-racking for him. we both ended up joining the sniper platoon at around the same time. and we were sent to sniper school together and assigned to be partners, which is really a significant thing in

i'm jake tapper. the coronavirus pandemic is raging out of control, and for the second day in a row, the united states experienced a record breaking and heartbreaking number of daily deaths. 3,744 american souls taken yesterday because of covid breaking the horrific record set the day before. this as the rollout of the vaccine is proceeding slower than initially promised. president trump returned to the white house just moments ago earlier than expected after bailing on his new year's plans at mar-a-lago, but the virus killing the americans he swore in oath to protect is not the reason for his early return. instead, it is because republicans are preparing for another doomed last ditch effort to try to overturn the election results. again, this effort is guaranteed to fail, but it is where the president is focusing his energy in these last few days. cnn's kaitlan collins joins us live from the white house. have there been any indications from the president or his team that they're even remotely focused

>> well, jake, thanks for having me on.with as you can imagine the fda reviewing every bit of information that is available about the pfizer vaccine. it's been a great day for science. if anyone's tuned into the 7 hours that they're ongoing now, you can see how seriously these independent experts and scientists are taking every piece of information. so we'll have confidence when they make a recommendation to the fda that the vaccine would be useable under this emergency use authorization. as you've mentioned right before it's a very complicated distribution plan that will happen. the first dose will go to people soon and then a second dose three weeks later. and there's very few doelss of vaccine available. so i don't think we'll start seeing a really notable impact in the large population until we have a lot of people vaccinated. that's still going to take us probably into next spring because of the number of doses that are available and how complex it is to get it downstream. and as you know trying to convince people to t

>> jake, this is so important.ve had a lot of questions and as you can imagine, this is why we do our line-by-line review of the data. our conditions for use, is what we call them, specifically states that if you have an allergy to any component of the pfizer/biontech vaccine, you should not take it. the places where the vaccine is going to be given, there should be the tools available to administer medications and support should someone have a severe allergic reaction. your point is well taken. we do not think that this a highly frequent issue that will arise. but we want to be careful. vaccine safety, medical product safety is top of mind for us. >> where can people find the list of ingredients, for want of a better word, in the pfizer/bionte pfizer/biontech vaccine so they know what the ingredients are so if they're allergic to it, they shouldn't take it? >> so i would encourage providers, patients to go to the product labeling, as well as the conditions of use. we've been transparent with that and we posted it

>> hi, jake. thanks for having me again. as you pointed out this last month has been a very difficult month for the united states in terms of record numbers of cases and hospitalizations and deaths. and so i think the challenge is really the strong recommendations to discourage people from traveling is really important. and encouraging people to not congregate because we know when we have travel, when we have da da congregation and groups of people that's when disease spreads. right now when there's so much disease spreading throughout the nation, we really would recommend discouraging travel. i think another thing that can be done and also making recommendations if people are going to take the risk of traveling they do it safely, they continue to wear their mask, they continue to wash their hands. they try to maintain the 6 feet distance so we can actually try to travel safely if people are going to do that. but really discouraging travel is the best thing that can be done. and if people decide to travel they do it safely.
