our correspondent jamal joins us, from a polling booth in ankara. this is the first time that the turks have been able to choose their own president. are you getting much of a sense of enthusiasm there? >> indeed, laura, it is. it will be the first time, as you say. it will be the 12th president since the turkish republic was founded. there is a lot of enthusiasm. some of the voters we spoke to said they cut the summer holidays short to come back and vote. there are not huge queues, there's a high turn out. the process is simply, easy. one ballot paper you go in and mark an extra person. you will not have the clogging up of the corridors. i want to ask you, what are the main issues that you are voting on here. >> the main issue that i'm voting on is if recep tayyip erdogan is elected as president, the regime of the country will change. it will become a presidential system, and this is something i do not want. and it is somebody that we cannot afford to have as a president. >> what is it that you believe is providing an alternative to recep tayyip er

jamal, he won with a good margin, a decisive victory. what were some of the highlights, what was the theme of the victory speech? >> well, it was a conciliatory speech, indeed, particularly coming from a man known for his fiery nature and his divisive statements. this was one of reconciliation, an offer to the opposition to try to move forward as he said. he said that there was no real losers in the elections, that had was a testament to the democracy of turkey, but he had words of advice for the opposition saying they should anticipate the new status quo and reflect on their positions and accept the new era that turkey has entered. as we heard. he thanked everywhere for taking part, and a real undertone to the historic nature of the elections, the first time in turkey's history that people directly elect their president. he made reference to the fact that the minorities in turkey partook in the elections. there was a kurdish candid, one of three contesting the election. a conciliatory tone. people will monitor to see what the first poli

the polls station opened jamal, a short time ago. how do you assess the turn out. is the result really a foregone conclusion? >> it is early hours, but there is a steady consistent flow of voters coming through. it is a much more faster and simple process than previous elections, in that there's one ballot paper and one choice for a voter to make. the process should be over a lot quicker than previous elections. in terms of foregone conclusions. well, most exit polls indicated that the prime minister recep tayyip erdogan is the favourite. it hasn't been an easy ride, when taking in corporation his main contender, ekmeleddin ihsanoglu. who don't see eye to aon a lot of things. they are trying to ensure that the party that governed turkey for over a decade doesn't continue on a trail of election wins. the likelihood is that recep tayyip erdogan will be victorious in a first round and there'll be no need for a second round. >> one of the things that the incumbent prime minister said is he wants to make the presidential position stronger than now. he wants to consolida
