c-span: the james baker law firm out of houston has an office in riyadh. we know of the bin laden family involved in the carlyle group, and the relationship with george herbert walker bush to all of that. you see where i'm going with this. the bush administration has a lot of people that have relationships with saudi arabia is that a bad idea? >> guest: well, it is very hard to judge the nature of those relationships. and i think, having been judged wrongly on a pretty shallow basis, i'm really loathed to judge individuals without full possession of the facts. so, i don't want to comment on individuals. but i think, given the difficulties that now have risen in the u.s.-saudi relationship, they need to be dealt with at arm's length. and not, in my view, given the kind of sympathy that we would accord to a country that was working hard to prevent the damaging consequences of their past policies. c-span: what's the basis of -- as you say in your book, the hatred for israel by the arab countries? >> guest: i think there's a whole range of views here, but some

there is a great quote from james baker to the treasurer secretary in this book, work hard, study and keep out of politics. he writes many of the followers hated compromise. it was better to lose anything than to give an inch. they didn't understand how the system worked. principal without praying ma terrorism is perilless. then you are dealing with politics so what is your advice to mcconnell and harry reid when they get together so you guys can end this? >> it is the ronald regan somebody who is with me 80% of the time is my friend and ally and not some 20% traitor. there are areas of agreement. senator susan collins of maine has come up with a proposal and a number of republicans and democrats have sat down together to look for finding solutions to get the government open again and that's what we need to do. we need to get the government open and people back to work. that's what the american people expect. they want their leaders to gofn and to function. that's why i will be on the floor of the senate in the next 45 minutes to push for that. >> we thank you so much. it is day 13 an

. >> i spoke this week to james baker. i wonder what he thought of his senator.ame during the government shutdown, texas' tea party ted cruz. what do you think about the man representing your state? the houston chronicle was in an article. do you think ted cruz represents your views in the republican party? >> well, i'm not sure that he represents my views in the republican party, but i'm not going to sit here and dump all over my junior senator, particularly given the fact that he worked for me in 2000. he was a very fine lawyer in that -- in that recount battle we had in florida. and he was a good solicitor general for the state of texas. was he wrong on this most recent episode? in my view, yes. it hurt us. it didn't gain us anything. we kicked the can just three months down the road. we didn't accomplish anything. it didn't take a rocket scientist, in my view, to figure out that if you don't have a senate and you don't have the white house, you're not going to be able to defund obama care. it was a maximumalist position and therefore i think it was a mistake.
