james carville is joining us right now. what do you think of this ticket, james?ll, it's going to be very interesting. i think from the democratic perspective, certainly going talk how they are both sons of privilege. ryan is from a wealthy family as is romney. neither have foreign policy experience to speak of. which is unusual. republicans have made this part and parcel of their strategies, going to come into play. democrats ask how much will romney's tax returns -- we don't get to see romney's tax returns. there's already a website that has, i think like 2,000 page briefing book on paul ryan up already. it's going to be an interesting choice. and to hold ryan budget, his tax plan is simply to governor romney's, neither one tell us how they will pay for it. tax expenditures that they will close. it will be very interesting, it does change the tenor of the race and to that extent, it's good, in the short term for governor romney. long term, i don't know. still a big debate here. >> it's interesting, james. yesterday, we spoke, i asked you who you thought romney s

ari fleischer, james carville, let me starts with you. a lot of conversation later but paul ryan to you, the headline, the major accomplishment or lack thereof. >> start with the proposition the conservatives tonight will think maybe they have a new reagan. this was a powerful speech. he threw down the gauntlet. this audience loved ann romney and condi rice. but this was the speech they were waiting for. we're going to have a great debate this fall. >> i think that paul ryan did a great job. he had to do a couple of things. he had to portray president obama as two things. divisive and a disappointment. to look at those persuadable voters and say, give mitt romney a shot here, and i think that's exactly what he did tonight, and he was the first person we really heard in this convention take on president obama directly and repeatedly and say this man has failed. >> ari? >> jolt of adrenaline. this was a jolt of optimistic adrenaline that he deliverrd tonight. that's something the republican party needs. the decisions to take on the future.

james carville is with me. i everyone, i have no idea how much to the degree you are catholic. but we were all baptized catholic. i found it amazing how powerful catholics are as a group in the country. ray, you sat down exclusively with mitt romney. we have a first look what you asked him when you asked why he picked dolan. >> i am making it very clear that the interest of religious freedom is having i support whole heart lid and i will work with him and others to ensure that each piece of legislation we consider is thought on its impact religious freedom and tolerance. >> so, ray, what do you think? how does his help romeny win catholics? >> i think speaks, james might agree. we are all catholics here. catholics look for what is being said and signs. and the fact that he is inviting cardinal dolan conveys -- he was the person in connection with president obama throughout the process. clearly a message is being send here. however, i have to say, and take a little umbrage with the way this is depicted. cardinal ryan caught a bit of hell -- >> interesting word. we are catholics

and cnn contributor james carville.d him in that beach shot in hawaii where the president was in no shirt, it's great reading and has all the inside gossip you want to know about. >> you're giving me "us weekly." this is devastating. >> tell me a little bit about what you found. there's infighting at the highest levels of the campaign. there was infighting between the president and between joe biden. what are some of the kind of biggest takeaways about the dysfunction in the campaign? >> well, i think the first thing to note, i covered the hillary clinton campaign in 2008. if you want to talk about real dysfunction, i think you have to refer to that. that's the granddaddy of them all. this is a by-product of the fact that in general, reelection campaigns are lousy. ask james. and this one in particular is lousy because the difference between 2008 in terms of what president obama can run on and 2012 are so great. so i think a lot of this dissonance, of this friction has a lot to do with the nature of this campaign. but t
