join me in welcoming james clapp. [applause] i want to begin with the russia and the u.s. relationship with russia. the russian u.n. ambassador rice said in the last week that relations are as bad as he has seen them in the last 40 years. characterized the u.s.-russian relationship. james: it is not at its peak by any stretch. we had a lot of difficult issues in syria and ukraine, just to name two. stressed time for the relationship. if it is worse than times i can recall, i am a cold warrior in the thrill that. it is worse than that. some pretty bad times than where we were nodding along at all. there -- they are still communicating. are in a constant dialogue and that is a good thing. i think this will be clearly a challenge for the next administration, the management of that relationship area -- relationship. charlie: why do you think is driving putin? ames: he has a vision of power.ussia as a great it is externally important to treated andsia be respected as a global power on a par with the united states. and i think that has a lot to do with and telling his behavior.
