. >>> we'll speak to james clyburn about this. i want to bring in my panel, though. basel, we're going to start with you. what does that tell with you messaging from people like gates and greene? >> i think -- we always talk about this country being divided, but it certainly seems so more so than ever before. certainly along cultural lines, but i think it's so much more than that. i think that you have leaders on the republican party who are content about drumming up, energizing, mobilizing their base, all things we are hearing about critical race theory. the intentionial is troubling, but i want to warn some of nigh friends and colleagues, whether you're republican or democrat, i care about mott raise, care about the policy. but i caution them to think this is not a one-off. >> evidence of the political divide, but can it be calmed when some have become far stream? then you have the remnants, the left jersey fraction of our party to attract supporter. clearly marjorie greene and gaetz, they're -- the water. it's something that our party you know they're trying torri

so, you know, already yesterday we were able to meet with majority whip james clyburn via zoom.with majority senate leader steny hoyer, hakeem jeffries. instead of moving all over the capitol, we're able to have these meetings and talking substance. >> wasn't that part of going? >> of course. now that we have a setback -- obviously you have to make the adjustment and we're making a really good adjustment. we're quarantining for ten days. when that's over, i think things will get back to normal. we'll take advantage of every minute we're here. >> do you think if you can ultimately not achieve what you're hoping to, the move the ball on federal voting rights legislation, unless the filibuster would magically disappear, which it's not going to, you need to sway republicans. if you can't do that in the 30 days, might you stay longer? >> that's a great question. looking at it right now, we have managed, along with others, to keep voting rights at the top of the domestic policy agenda. we're hearing a lot about infrastructure this week, and that makes sense. we have made voting rights

. >> congressman, your colleague james clyburn told us he supports amending the filibuster to have alegislation in much the same way there's a carveout for judges and supreme court nominees. those folks only need 51 votes to get confirmed. have you seen any signs of support among the folks who need convincing? >> i want to echo what majority whip clyburn spoke about when he said we need a carveout. we absolutely do. one of the points i made this morning when we were speaking in the triangle is mitch mcconnell went against his own rules and created a carveout for amy coney barrett. we don't need to do this for partisan gain. we need to do this for the black and hispanic voters in states like texas, arizona, florida, georgia and north carolina that are about to be discriminated against in a way that we've never seen before, not sense the 1960s, if we do not get some sort of protection put into place. we obviously need to pass hr-1 and of course hr-4, the john lewis voting rights act, because for southern states and states that were previously under section 5, it reinstates that and giv
