english explorer captain james cook described it as a barren, stormy wasteland devoid of any habitation or interest, which faded in and out of view as the fog set in. he didn't even attempt to go ashore. [man] where we're heading for is the south end of three hole bay. from there, we go to cape aialik. it's gorgeous up here. even days like today, i like to come out. it can get miserable when the wind comes up. it's not much fun n metimes, but it's never boring. [narrator] even for expert navigators like bill stevens, the coast is still difficult to navigate with hidden offshore pinnacle rocks. with the help of the national park service, archaeologists have now begun to research this area and found that in fact there's been a very long history of settlement. [man] we knew this site was here. it hadn't been that well described, but it was found by some archaeologists who were working for the state of alaska following the exxon valdez oil spill, and there was great concern that some of these areas that were being impacted by the spill had archaeological sites on them that no one had looked

correspondent james cook has the story. >> more than 100 miles out in the sea, ribbons of oil are streaking the surface. from the air, a small slip appears to be breaking up. on the seabed, these pictures shot on sunday show bubbles of oil rising from a great thing. this is at the heart of the problem. the shell platform has been drilling for two decades. from the surface, a pipe line drops 310 feet to the seabed. it then snakes along for 7 miles and bottles oil back to the surface. the leak is a short distance from the well head. shell says 1300 bottles of oil -- barrels of oil have escaped. >> it took us until friday to gain access to where the leak is occurring. we depressurized the line, which caused substantial reduction in the spill, and now, we had a very minor or relatively minor league. >> minor, but still the worst for a decade. here in europe's oil capital, though, there is no panic. >> since the 1970's, this harbor has bustled with ships, and aberdeen has grown rich on oil, but the latest - are deeper and trickier to extract. does that mean there will be more spills? >> the cost

>> i don't know what james sperling is cooking up over there. he's maser in devising economically saleable programs. he's not an economist, but a smart salesman of economic policy, i think jared would agree. >> absolutely. >> if he comes up with something, that's one half. the other half is the president has to saying we're in a period of all sister. we can't spray water all over the place, we've got to drop one drop of water on each seed and be smart about how we're spending. he's got to convince the people that we're smart about it. the stimulus package has a bad rap, okay? it seemed like it was hasty, it was unfocused, some of the criticism is ahn fair, but it's baked in the cake. american people think that was a waste of money, that was watering the desert. >> well said. >> we can't afford to water the desert anymore. >> i've got to tell you, i agree with howard, i think the word "stimulus" is a bad work. pick up "new york times," "usa today" your local paper after the president speaks in september. will there be a big char that says 500,000
