melissa: i want to panelists to react to this, james freeman that is a big shake-up. howard schultz is the name and face of the brand. he is the guy behind starbucks. you wonder if it is connected to politics at all. he was big advocate of hillary clinton. if you believe wikileaks on the list of people being considered as a vp pick. now stepping down at starbucks. what do you make of it? >> you think maybe depression over the election? melissa: i was going to let you say that, my friend james freeman. >> we're kidding. obviously, you're right. huge news. this is a guy who built the company. maybe it is not quite a big of a shift in terms of how it feels internally at starbucks, because as ashley mentioned he will step into a role to focus more on technology. that has been a big focus for him for a while. he spends a lot of time thinking about mobile payments. ideally he would love to have a starbucks solution that becomes a standard for other retail stores too. that end of the business i think has gotten a lot of his attention for a long time. melissa: scott, that is

stuart: james freeman is with us.ou make of this tussle at the top for control of the democratic party itself? >> i think perez is the call here. i can't believe they want to go with ellison to make it that extreme. but the firing of the press staff by chuck schumer is interesting. did they say what about james comey and the russians, what about fake news? stuart: while we have you, would you like to make any comment on professor paul krugman, a "new york times" columnist who on the day of the election gleefully suggested the stock market would crash and it would not recover. >> obviously we have seen how wrong he is in many things. we have seen the tax and regulatory reforms driving this rally. we have seen the mercedes effect. but also if you are talking about why we have a little bit of a wet blanket, we talked about the oil rule. there is also a new obama rule limiting coal production. so it's this kind of reminder right now, there is still another month and he's doing a lot of midnight regulations. this is a sign

we're back with dan heninger, joe raggo, mary kissel and james freeman. s, we're reading some of our friends on the left saying donald trump is inheriting one of the greatest economies that any new president has never inherited. are you buying that? >> well, i would say it has great potential when you move from the obama agenda to the trump agenda. >> what about the state of the economy now. how strong is it? >> it's been bumping along given great burdens placed on it by washington, but what you've seen since the election is that rise in not just consumer confidence but business confidence. you see the small businesses in the nfib survey looking to grow again, looking to hire again, and i think we'll see an end to what's been really an investment recession in terms of companies not willing to invest in expanding new plant and equipment, new products and i think that's what the trump agenda promises. >> just to put a number on the last year, third quarter over third quarter, 1.7% growth in gdp. for the previous year not so great. >> i think the answer you a

james freeman, big meeting, technology guys yesterday.went well but i don't sigh much response on the market today to technology. >> well i think, you shouldn't see, here's the difference between the trump policy and obama policy trump policy is about creating growth for everybody and i think technology will share in that. the obama white house, a lot more focused on their friend in silicon valley, how do we help them? net neutrality, which we've seen diminishing investment in broadband internet networks. but, with this trump meeting here, i think maybe, maybe, a few of those ceos who don't like him i think for non-policy reasons in many cases are thinking, well, we have something in common here. tax reform, repatriate all that cash overseas, these could be good things. stuart: my heart goes out to the investors and some of our viewers who are not in the stock market. ashley: yeah. stuart: they have got some money. they're not in the stock market. come january the 1st, their 401(k) contribution has to be invested. are they going to put th
