james comey and as we mentioned a source close to comey told nbc's ken dlanian he hopes there are tapesying that would be perfect. joining me, stacey plastic ket. importantly, she was senior counsel for then deputy attorney general james comey. with me, ron has kell, former 30-year veteran of the fbi and former assistant director at the bureau. welcome to you both. stacey, we'll begin with you. a lot of the president's narrative n plain english, didn't sound like the james comey people knew at the bureau. the desire to have dinner with his boss, for starters. but then asking to stay on four years into a ten-year term. and then reassuring the president he wasn't under investigation. did you have that same reaction? >> that does not sounds like the james comey that those of us who worked with him at the deputy of justice during his tenure as deputy attorney general know. james comey was a man of you had most integrity. almost to a fault. and we saw that earlier this summer with the way that he conducted himself, may in some instances seem to have overstepped the line. but i think that was

cnn political commentator, and ken cuccinelli, former arizona attorney general, who serves as president of the senate conservatives fund and supports the firing of jamesd to have both of you on, two different voices here. ken, let me begin with you. you heard sarah sanders at the briefing. she was forced to clarify because of the president's interview today on nbc news. there have been all kinds of holes in the white house's version of events that have now been, i guess, clarified further because of the president today. how do you explain that? >> well, first of all, if you look at rod rosenstein's letter, it's pretty -- just in length, it's short. i mean, he was very substantiative in it, but it was short. and you certainly come to the conclusi conclusion, well, this is perfectly legitimate, but shuler, there's more thinking and so on. and i think we're just seeing that being reflected now. i think they're putting it in the form of a timeline was useful, but really, this was the right decision, not necessarily done the right way. >> well, it sounds like the rod rosenstein letter was just in impertinent based upon what the president told lester holt,

little while ago the president had reportedly asked fbi director james comey to drop the investigation into michael flynn. joining me now, kenian. ken, what have you learned? >> chris, just now i'm looking at a letter from the chairman of the house oversight committee requesting from the justice department all memos and notes that former director comey wrote about his encounters with donald trump. and that's as expected. one of the interesting things besides the obvious, one of the interesting things about tonight is we're learning that comey memorialized all his conversations with the president according to a source close to comey telling me not too long ago. so what other memos are out there is one question we're wondering about. the second question really is, did director comey believe that donald trump was trying to obstruct justice when he suggested that it would be best if he shut down this mike flynn investigation, chris. >> and these documents, ken, just to be clear, these are documents that are essentially written as kind of deadman switches as for public consumption should something like this happen. >> absolutely.

ken, what is the late est on james comey? >> reporter: he is going to testify in what is going to be one of the more dramatic hearings in recent washington history. as you've said, a source close to comey today said that he did speak to robert mueller, the special counsel, and did get clearance to talk about some of the things surrounding his firing. we don't know specifically whether there are any guide post, whether mueller asked him not to discuss certain matters. what's been interesting is it wasn't clear comey was going to testify at all. we knew for a while he was interested in telling his story publicly, but once robert mueller became the special counsel there was a lot of speculation that mueller may ask him not to testify for fear that it could somehow impede his investigation. particularly if mueller is looking at the obstruction question around comey's conversations with donald trump. but now it appears mueller has green lighted at least some public testimony and it could happen as early as next week. we understand

some new details are coming to light on how former fbi director james comey reacted to his public firing. joining me now nbc's kenou reported mr. comey was just furious how this all went down. what is he saying to those close to him? >> to be clear i haven't spoke tone jim comey and i don't know that any reporter has. i am speaking to people who are friends of his, associates, and they are saying he was upset with the manner in which he was fired. he found out about it while he was addressing fbi agents in los angeles and the news flashed on the tv screens. he's more concerned with the way president trump characterized the dinner in january. one, he said comey asked for the dinner and, two, the president said jim comey asked to be retained in his job as fbi director. comey associates are telling me those things just didn't happen that way, alex. >> ken, dilanian, we'll talk mao about this more later. the fbi direct or's firing magnified for the first face-to-face meeting between president trump and top russian diplomats that took place just the day after the firing. the white house is now fighting back against cr

today we're learning more about how former fbi director james comey reacted to his very public firing with indignation. joining me now nbc's kenelaney. with a welcome to you, comey was furious about this, about how it all went down. do you think he's anxious to talk about it? >> alex, his associates tell us that he is. although he's concerned about how anything he might say will affect the fbi and that's his biggest concern they say at this point. of course he was upset with the way it all went down, you know, learning about the firing on tv screens as he's addressing fbi agents out in l.a., but, more importantly, people close to him are telling us he really wants to correct false statements according to him and his people that were made by the president. that he assured the president he wasn't under investigation. people who know him are telling us it's very unlikely he would have put it that way. >> so the president tweeted comey should worry about tapes, not the but tapes implying their conversation. comey would welcome a taping of their talks, you tweeted out yesterday. what are you getting from your sources on that? >> th

ken, in addition to sally yates' testimony we heard something interesting from james clapper.he was asked by lindsey graham about any kind of concern about trump business interests. anything from president trump's business that might have a tie to russia. clapper said he can't comment on that because that impacts the investigation. it was a moment that raised eyebrows. i want your take on that. >> my take, hallie, is we need to be cautious about that. clapper also said he hasn't been briefed on the fbi counter intelligence investigation and he only learned about it when comey disclosed it publicly. i am not sure what to read into clapper's statement there. there has clearly been a series of allegations that the russians have tried to influence trump through business deals. now, trump, of course, denies doing business in russia, but there are well documented instances where russians have invested in trump properties. just recently, a golf writer claimed that eric trump told him that trump was financing his golf courses with russian money. eric trump has subsequently denied that

ken delaney. he has some news. >> reporter: i've been speaking with a source close to james comey law enforcement official. how did comey view that request from trump about flynn? did he consider resigning? the answer i got was, no, he was disturbed by it, but he immediately documented it. he did not consider resigning. he felt he could manage the situation. he kept that information, though, from the rank and file agents who are working on the russia investigation because he did not want them to feel chilled. but it wasn't the kind of situation where he felt like he needed to take immediate action. you know, trump is the president. he felt, he's running the fbi, he's still continuing to be an independent fbi director. and he thought he could continue in his job, greta. >> do you know -- do you have any idea where this memo is or whether or not we're going to see it soon? >> i think it's likely that we're going to see it soon because i believe that the fbi has a copy of it and some other memos that comey wrote, some which are classified. the public may not see them, but congress is certainly already draftin
