let's go back over to james longman who's in tel aviv for us. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. i'm still at this strike site in central tel aviv which was hit last night. you just do no not see devastation like this in central tel aviv. people here are not used to this. this is now a country in a state of war, and fighting continues down close to the borders where hamas militants infiltrated. shocking scenes of people being gunned down when they were out on their morning routines, barricaded in their homes, desperate for help, and a hostage situation also ongoing both here in israel, but also in gaza. men, women, children, the elderly. some of the images absolutely horrific. those people being taken on the backs of the motorbikes and cars driven into gaza, and that is now going to further complicate israel's response because yes, there have been air strikes overnight, some 250 palestinians have been killed, but will israel move in with a ground force? we've seen israel forces on the border with gaza, but that could further destabilize this ent

foreign correspondent james longman starts us off from tel aviv. good morning, james. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, george. i'm at a strike site in central tel aviv. you can see this building entirely destroyed. the cleanup operation has started. cars all along this street destroyed as well. this doesn't happen in an area like this. people are in shock. they should be enjoying their weekend. instead this is a country at war because the fighting is continuing in six locations along the border with gaza where hamas militants infiltrated, and the images are truly shocking. taking them by surprise, killing them on the spot where they found them. we now understand at least 500 israelis have been killed and as many as 2,000 injured. hostage situations are also ongoing both here in israel and in the gaza strip. hamas says they've taken dozens of hostages, men, women, children, and the elderly, and that is going to further complicate israel's response. yes, we've seen air strikes overnight as many as 250 palestinians dead, but will israel send in ground

our foreign correspondent james longman has the latest and joins us now. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. the situation in gaza is getting increasingly desperate. more than 1,300 now dead in relentless bombardment. there are vulnerable women and children inside gaza. the idf says that hamas has now lost control of certain parts of the gaza strip. apocalyptic scenes in gaza as entire neighborhoods destroyed by israeli bombs. this man in gaza saying they've killed our children and killed us. we don't know where to go. now more than 1,300 people killed in gaza, 6,000 injured. the health ministry said most hurt are women an children. young patients rushed in by car, ambulance, families desperate to get help, hospitals overwhelmed as officials warn they are now working at full capacity and there is no place for the wounded from israeli air strikes to be treated. >> the palestinian health system has less than a week before it collapses. all supplies are running short. >> reporter: the bombardment comes in the wake of hamas militants' unprec

let's get an inside look at those preparations from abc's james longman, who joins us live from sderotel. james, good morning to you. >> reporter: janai, hi. yeah, we are about as close as anyone is able to get to gaza. it's about a mile in that direction, and we have been hearing all morning the sound of outgoing -- you can hear it now -- hitting inside gaza and can see where contact has been made as well and also hearing small arms fire, which suggests that israeli forces are coming into close contact with hamas fighters, but we don't have a clear picture of what is going on in gaza right now. what we do know, you heard from ian there, is the idf is in gaza. hamas says they're leading leading israeli soldiers into ambushes. the idf denies that and say they haven't taken any casualties, but overnight 150 targets inside gaza were hit. the israelis saying they're trying to hit underground terror tunnels, as they call them, underground infrastructure, combat spaces and say they killed two hamas commanders, one in charge of aerial defense and one in charge of naval defense. one was in cha

. >> martha: so let's get more on the hostage situation now with abc foreign correspondent james longman has been here in israel all week, and james, so good to see you. i know you have had a really emotional week talking to survivors and families of hostages. >> yeah, martha, you know, it's been extraordinary actually. i think what's the most striking is the intimacy of the killing on saturday. that's what really, i think, the survivors explained. the idea these men came into their homes and murdered their families in front of them. that will stay with me a long time. 16 years old, the last thing he heard his father say was, i've lost my arm, and his mother, her body landed on his and he had to hide under her body from hamas as they searched the building for more victims. it's terrible. others have been waiting on news for loved ones and they haven't been getting it. >> martha: they haven't gotten any news. they're not keeping in touch with people? >> no. i mean all week this week, we had a horrible image -- i met a family. a 22-year-old was at the festival in the desert. her father was
