so the fact that it is hard to remember presidents from the 19th century is what james madison and the members of the constitution said that's what they were aiming for. they want those people to be unmemorable because the stars of the show would be members of congress. so i decided to look in on the three most noted members of congress during the first half of the 19th century. my continuing recovery from writing biographies came of that. for a while i had a long-term project of writing the history of the united states through biographies. i eventually wrote six volumes in this connection which -- collection which started with benjamin franklin and ended with ronald reagan. if you read those biographies they link together to give you the history of the united states from that 18th century to the 21st century. i thought it was a pretty good idea. one of the things that i concluded by the time i got to the and was that there are certain stories that are hard to tell. if you are writing about presidents, they are a very convenient character to hold your story on. but there's a lot going
