i manage education programs at james monroe's highland. we are delighted to be doing the program of general jackson, president monroe, and the florida territory tonight. in partnership with andrew jackson's hermitage in nashville, tennessee. now, a little bit about how this program came to be. we are delighted to have aaron adams with us tonight who is the director of education at the hermitage. you'll be hearing a little bit more about her in just a moment. highland was fortunate to open new exhibits this past september. these exhibits for the first time in history interpreted the building into that you see the photograph as a guest house built during monroe's presidency by two enslaved carpenters named peter and georgia. prior to 2016, we thought this building to be part of the main house. this is a really significant re-curation to now have this building curated as it was as a guest house. in one of our exhibit goals, it was to really anchor this building in place. what was happening in highland and the world historically as the enslave

in examining the overlap between the lives of james monroe and andrew jackson, i was really struck with a few things. one, monroe and jackson are only nine years apart in their ages. munroe was 18 at the time that is represented in the famous portrait of washington crossing the delaware. it was not until the last year or so that i realized that the man holding the flag behind washington's monroe. and so, that was quite a new thought for me. jackson's 13 at this point, at least by 1780 jackson is 13. madison at this point would have been about 90 years older than that. while madison, in most people's eyes, would have been an average age to serve as a combatant during the american revolution, andrew jackson is serving at 13. he has 13 when this begins and he joins the american army on the example of his oldest brother who was killed at the battle of -- in 1779. often we get the question what is a 13-year-old kid doing in a military situation, in an army? what army would accept a services of a 13 or 15 year old boy? jackson is serving the american army largely as a messenger, a career. thi

james monroe remains a very close friend. thomas jefferson. and for the purposes of our story today, what we also know is that when madison realizes that we do need this thing called the bill of rights, amended to our constitution, one of the first things he does is travel to gunston hall and consult with mason about how best to accomplish that. mason lives long enough to see the bill of rights amended to the constitution and ultimately dies at gunston hall after a very brief illness in 1792. thomas jefferson was the last person to see last visitor to see him before he passed. and unfortunately, monroe was trying diligently to get there, but could not get there in time. so as we think about what all this means in its global context, there are a couple of key things that i'll just share by way of how i would define the global impact. most particularly of the virginia declaration of rights, and i've kind of got this divided down into a couple of different categories. one, it motivated other declarations. you know what? mason was able to do was c

was really no doubt that he would attend william and mary like his father, like jefferson, like james monroe, law he was one of three presidents to have attended william and mary, it became pretty apparent that he was going to pursue a legal career. shortly after he graduated from the college of william and mary, his father and another tyler relative took him on as a legal apprentice. a little bit later when judge tyler was elected governor of virginia, it could no longer supervise his sons legal studies, edmund randolph stepped in. randolph had been attorney general under george washington, and really presented young tyler with a very challenging way to approach the law. law tyler passed the bar in 1809 at the age of 19. now this is interesting because in virginia the law at the time -- they had to be at least 21 years of age to pass the bar exam. to even sit for the bar exam. but apparently the examiner could not ask tyler howled he was. perhaps as fathers connections allowed them to look the other way. but in any event he was 19. tyler passed the bar exam -- did not set a practice right a
