i manage education programs at james monroe's highland. we are delighted to be doing the program of general jackson, president monroe, and the florida territory tonight. in partnership with andrew jackson's hermitage in nashville, tennessee. now, a little bit about how this program came to be. we are delighted to have aaron adams with us tonight who is the director of education at the hermitage. you'll be hearing a little bit more about her in just a moment. highland was fortunate to open new exhibits this past september. these exhibits for the first time in history interpreted the building into that you see the photograph as a guest house built during monroe's presidency by two enslaved carpenters named peter and georgia. prior to 2016, we thought this building to be part of the main house. this is a really significant re-curation to now have this building curated as it was as a guest house. in one of our exhibit goals, it was to really anchor this building in place. what was happening in highland and the world historically as the enslave

and finally james monroe. for jackson represents this this link now right that jackson begins to cultivate this conversation with james monroe in such a way that it begins to influence madison's own thinking about jackson at this point. and so really, it's james monroe in many ways who gets jackson pulled into the thick of things in the war of 1812 now madison is not going to direct jackson's move towards canada or to move to the right lakes region or the ohio valley instead he is going to point himself against the muscogee people and ultimately to, florida to alabama to new orleans where the war is going to end at that point. i love the two portraits of these men here at this point because again, it's showing them roughly the same age the same position and so it really it kind of creates. i think this wonderful visual reference point between the mover the politician and the mover the general in the military. course nancy do you want to move us on just one more step? thank you. so the war of 1812 of course com

in examining the overlap between the lives of james monroe and andrew jackson, i was really struck with a few things. one, monroe and jackson are only nine years apart in their ages. munroe was 18 at the time that is represented in the famous portrait of washington crossing the delaware. it was not until the last year or so that i realized that the man holding the flag behind washington's monroe. and so, that was quite a new thought for me. jackson's 13 at this point, at least by 1780 jackson is 13. madison at this point would have been about 90 years older than that. while madison, in most people's eyes, would have been an average age to serve as a combatant during the american revolution, andrew jackson is serving at 13. he has 13 when this begins and he joins the american army on the example of his oldest brother who was killed at the battle of -- in 1779. often we get the question what is a 13-year-old kid doing in a military situation, in an army? what army would accept a services of a 13 or 15 year old boy? jackson is serving the american army largely as a messenger, a career. thi

the problem is monroe james monroe is in a really tough bind. okay, he's in a tough bind because as an ambassador, he can't really make these crazy waves. you're just starting off as a country. you can't like, you know, go over there and start making these giant waves and say oh you got to release this and making noise demands. he had to walk this tight line. okay, and so what do you do you want to help out the wife of your friend? who's probably my likely be executed you want to help her out, but what you can what can you do? well, this is where elizabeth comes in. okay, so you can imagine this young woman in france with all this new stuff all this new sites and sound, you know, probably a little scared a little intimidated. well, what does she do? okay at the time there weren't a lot of fancy carriages in paris like for rent or things like that, you know, those times are you know, everything was in chaos. all right, and so they get a carriage and elizabeth has a gussied up. okay and make the carrots look really important like a diplomatic heri

james monroe like thomas jefferson and other presidents before him, inherited wealth, including real property and property, and people enslaved people. he enslaved at least. 177 black people, including enslaving some at the white house, monroe, while professing the evils of slavery, did not grant freedom to the black people. he held in bondage. with the exception of many meeting one man, peter marks. and that was upon james monroe's death. peter marks was granted his freedom additionally, james monroe believed that free black people should manifest their freedom beyond the shores of the united states in order to maintain the integrity of the social and economic order. how does highlands present the story of president monroe? the last founding father. and as an enslaver and a segregationist without leaning into the narrative of the benevolent enslaver. additionally how are the experiences of those who were enslaved, including peter marks? who? monroe man you made it. and peter mallory, the enslaved black man, a skilled carpenter who helped build the highlands. guess house in a way that

was really no doubt that he would attend william and mary like his father, like jefferson, like james monroe, law he was one of three presidents to have attended william and mary, it became pretty apparent that he was going to pursue a legal career. shortly after he graduated from the college of william and mary, his father and another tyler relative took him on as a legal apprentice. a little bit later when judge tyler was elected governor of virginia, it could no longer supervise his sons legal studies, edmund randolph stepped in. randolph had been attorney general under george washington, and really presented young tyler with a very challenging way to approach the law. law tyler passed the bar in 1809 at the age of 19. now this is interesting because in virginia the law at the time -- they had to be at least 21 years of age to pass the bar exam. to even sit for the bar exam. but apparently the examiner could not ask tyler howled he was. perhaps as fathers connections allowed them to look the other way. but in any event he was 19. tyler passed the bar exam -- did not set a practice right a

biography of marilyn monroe byjoyce carol oates, which is a work of fiction, but based on some historical fact. it's directed by andrew dominik, who made the assassination ofjesse jamesward robert ford, and it has a stunning central performance by ana de armas, who is absolutely brilliant as norma jean, marilyn monroe. the way that it plays her story, however, is not as a biopic, but as a horror movie. you know, in the past, you know, i've tried to sell movies to you by going, "it's not a horror movie." this is a horror movie. so it really is? it really is a full—on gothic psychodrama over—cranked really in many ways, kind of very cruel and brutal. wow. and it is a film about childhood trauma being revisited throughout adulthood. some critics have said, "well, it completely makes marilyn monroe a victim and it underestimates her talents as a comedian." well, those things may be true. in the end, it's not about marilyn monroe. it is a sister picture to the assassination ofjesse james, which was a film about how fame can kill you. this is kind of the same thing, but with a demonic edge. it's almost like the spectre of marilyn becomes a possessing entity that at first p
