you're watching "world business today" live here on cnn. >>> in less than two hours time james murdochestioned by british parliament members about alleged phone hacking at the now folded news of the world tabloid newspaper. this time murdoch won't have his media mogul father, rupert by his side. we go to london. atika, is this likely to be pivotal for his fate. >> reporter: it is likely. this is his chance to basically defend himself and basically without his father by his side. it's going to be a crucial test. now, what it really -- the crux of what they're doing to be question him about is what's been called the forenevel e-mail, an e-mail that alleged that this phone hacking went beyond just one reporter. james murdoch says he did not know about that e-mail later, however, news international's lawyer and former editor of news of the world both say they told james murdoch the contents of this e-mail as early as 2008. that's something that james murdoch disputes and is he expected to defend himself on that later today when he's grilled by mps. interestingly you point out the kind of p

. >>> today is a big day for the murdoch empire and most specifically james murdoch, the son of the media magnet rupe per murdoch. the younger murdoch is increasingly seen as compromised as revelations about phone hacking at his father's giant titan of the media industry news corporation just keep on piling up. james murdoch is on the board at the parent company news corp. and that company's -- and at the company's agm last month, more than a third of the shareholders voted against his re-election. so he survived, but clearly a big revolt. the question is will he face a similar shareholder revolt today. nina dos santos is at brks squi brks's annual general meeting to test the mood. nina, does it look as if he'll survive or it will be a rerun, if you like, of what happened at the main board at news corp.? >> it may well be the latter charles. let's point out that news corporation controlled by the murdoch family owned 39% of british sky broadcasting. for that particular reason analysts are saying it's unlikely we could see too much dissent against murdoch and him not being a chair here. we

james murdoch signed off on that the blood. this inquiry will not focus on why he decided to do that. he said at the time needed not have all the details in front of him. he has given evidence of two senior executives at the newspaper have come forward to say that he did know that phone hacking was more widespread than news international has been saying and that he was aware of those key facts. will want to grow -- and it seems to be gross incompetence on his part. if he was proven to have misled a parliamentary committee, that would be very serious and it could even cause a contempt of parliament. certainly his reputation would be ruined. remember, also, there is its business position to consider. if mp's suggest that he was incompetent, then that would have serious ramifications for weather does inherit the rupert murdoch media empire. >> thank you. if you are a fan of eddie murphy, you might like the idea that he will host the oscar awards this year. he was going to, but ps pulled out because its producer has resigned. -- he

so it was james murdoch word against the word of those two former employees, and james murdoch said todayve their testimony was misleading and i dispute it. >> reporter: the questioning was more aggressive today than it had been in the past. at one point tom watson who has been leading this charge on the parliamentary investigation accused james murdoch of trying to buy employees' silence, and also not knowing enough about what was going on at his company. >> mr. murdoch you must be the first mafia boss in history that didn't know he was running a criminal enterprise. >> mr. watson, please i think that is inappropriate. >> reporter: he was questioned about recent revelations that the company had hired someone to con srubgt tkur sraeu lance on some of the lawyers representing hacking sreuplt hacking victims and their families. >> it is appalling, it is something i would never condone and the company should never condone and it was shock when i found out. and it's just unacceptable. >> reporter: now, bill, where we go from here, the committee will write a report that it will submit to the p

there was someone dressed up as james murdoch there. nside, murdoch was trying to defend himself against accusations that he mislead parliamentari parliamentarians. murdoch is in a bit of a catch 22 here. basically by saying that he did not know the extent of the problem, that he hadn't seen these e-mails that had been circulating as early as 2008 indicates that he didn't seem to know what was going on within his own company. certainly one mp called him incompetent for that reason. on the other hand, if he was to give any indication that he knew of this phone hacking scandal happening any earlier, then it would have looked as though some sort of a cover-up had gone forward. he was really in a very difficult position, trying to strike that balance. did he succeed? we'll have to wait and see what the reaction is, not only from the public but from news within international itself. in the meantime, there's more to come for james murdoch. next week the judge led an inquiry into phone hacking scandal. atika shubert, cnn, london. >>> strong sto

james murdoch, rupert murdoch has resigned. michelle kosinski joins us live.lling this a housekeeping issue. what does the resignation mean or is this just title shifting? >> that's what everybody is trying to figure out. it is an interesting change. the timing of this is obvious. and now we know that james murdoch is relocating from london to new york. what he's done, in september this did not just happen but we're only just now finding out about it. that he resigned his board positions on a couple different boards for the parent company of some of these newspapers. some of which were under scrutiny. one which of was facing lawsuits surrounding the hacking scandal. but he is still in charge of news international which is the overarching company that controls these british entities. so it depends on who you talk to. industry, analysts are trying to look at this and say he's scaling back his role in the company. is this for legal reasons? is this for looks reasons? the company is saying, well, he remains in charge. really, not much has changed. he is just reloc

it's reported today that james murdoch resigned as directors of the company that publishes "the sun" nbc's michelle kosinski has more details. where does this leave the murdoch family. his siblings are still involved, correct? >> right. this is not an enormous change. with but since this scandal, with the murdochs called before lawmakers to testify, there have been calls for at least james to resigned. however, he remains in charge of news international, which controls these british press entities. so is this a huge change? no. is it some change that we didn't know about until now? yes. most recently we saw james called back to testify in these hacking inquiries before a parliamentnary subcommittee, because former executives said his prior testimony, they felt was not forth coming. very uncomfortable moments for james murdoch here. he has denied knowing anything about hacking possibly being more extensive, but he's damned if he did, damned if he didn't. if he did know it was more extensive, that would mean his prior testimony was inaccurate. if he didn't know about it, then lawmakers

"no," he said.
