joining me now, ferguson's mayor james noel. i would like for you to describe for me what is happening in ferguson right now and how do you keep this from escalating even further? >> we're having a difficult time especially at night which was mentioned before, discerning between those who are peacefully aseming and unlawful protests and hiding among the peaceful people who are trying to have their voices -- we would like to have all of those who wish to protest and assemble to do so and we try to do so in a productive manner and a save manner. unfortunately, when evening hours come, those who want to cause problems and hide under the cover of darkness, and hide behind lawful and peaceful protesters, they come out and they cause problems, and unfortunately, there's a lot of people in the way when that happens. >> sir, do you think police have responded with an overly heavy hand in the michael brown shooting? i go back to the candle light vigil that was held in which you had police officers on top of . s.w.a.t. trucks looking at t

just in the last hour, this was the mayor of ferguson, james noels, talking to our own tamron hall. >> there is not a racial divide in the city. >> according to whom? your perspective or african-americans in your community? >> that is the perspective of all residents in our city. absolutely. the vast majority of my community and i mean i put that number in the 95th percentile is supportive of what we have been doing and what we're going to do to go forward. >> liz, i got to -- just got to wonder, you have a white mayor, white council, white school board and white police force. are they in complete denial aft reports hearing from the community that there is long-standing resentment and police harassment and other indignities against the african-american community? >> it's stunning and confirming. it demonstrates what happens when you have an elected person in office, well, actually, he ran unopposed. he is the mayor of ferguson. >> you have to wonder about the disengagement that leads to that. >> it underscores the concerns and the argument that is are being made about how african-amer

james noels thanks so much for taking the time to be with us.first and foremost, is there anything you can tell us, understanding that you are trying to separate yourself from the investigation. but is there anything you can tell us with regard to the incident that sparked all of this, the shooting of michael brown. >> well, absolutely. unfortunately, no matter how the investigation turns out, the situation is a tragedy for the young man and his family. it's a tragedy for our community that we've seen the community torn apart for this. again, we've turned this over to st. louis county police department. we want this to be a fair and impartial dew process for both the victim and the police officer. and so we're staying completely out of it. we're not even looking to have any information for ourselves until we see a final report. >> but at present, we are being told that there were two officers who were hurt in the ensuing violence last night and, again, that police were fired at from the crowds at a walmart that was being looted, that s t shots w

we're three nights into violence now, i think you need a little bit stronger call, mayor james noel,e given. he says they have handed over the investigation to the fbi and at the state and county level so there's no more of this impartiality question about whether they're investigating. is that an indication that maybe this police department felt it couldn't handle this? >> well, what happens usually is you have -- because i used to be on the officer-involved shooting team, so anytime there was a shooting that occurred at the hands of a police officer and an individual died, you have to do -- put it together, interview all the witnesses, go to determine whether or not it was a good shooting, meaning valid and it wasn't something you need manslaughter or homicide charges. so it's always better if you have impartiality, sometimes due to budget constraints. certain cities can't handle their own investigation, but once you have more confidence there a public perception level, if you have someone, an outside agency coming in, doing the questions, asking -- like we did the district attorne
