and professor james peterson of lehigh university, a contributor. >> karen, can you name the republicanlle put up their hands and admit they need voting rights act in their district because of a propensity to discriminate which is in fact what the supreme court is now asking them to do? can you name one? >> i can't name a one unless they are no longer in the house or the senate i would say. no, i mean look, i have to say, martin, essentially what this decision said is, we agree there's still discrimination. we just don't care. that's really what this decision said. if you noticed they did say they understand there's still discrimination but don't think this is necessarily the way to handle it. i think this is a rallying cry for progressives, center left and left people for 2014. we have got to take this as a very serious sign that if we don't start now with all the voter i.d. and all the shenanigans we know we'll start to see again and all the things we need to do to make sure that people aren't disenfranchised in 2014, we're going to have a very different looking congress. >> they've a

joining us now from philadelphia is professor james peterson, director of africaner studies at lehighrofessor, does the edward snowden leak take the attention off the attorney general or does it add to his woes? >> this is interesting because i feel like the attorney general has been taking the attention away from the president in terms of the department of justice and the challenges that they've had around leaks and what's been revealed about the kind of information they've been collecting. but you're right that this nsa story has now eclipsed even that. we're not talking about any of those so-called scan das anymore. we're having the range of strange bed fellows conversations where libertarians on the left and right are sort of coming together to critique this administration almost as if this kind of stuff hasn't been going on fortom sim now. so i think the nsa has in some ways moved the mark a little bit off of attorney general eric holder in terms of the ways in which the government surveils and collects data on the citizens of the united states. >> except the get holder mob does

james peterson, director of africana studies at lehigh university. you're a young guy.hinking about the legacy you teach in this regard. more and more of the republican party with the exception of the clintons have been able to make a lot of penetration to working class whites pulling them to the conservative side for social economic reasons. and in the '60s when bobby was killed he was trying to hold together that demolition coalition of working class people in both groups, white and black. >> he was. at least based on his rhetoric and appeal, i think he was doing a great job. the coalition he was pulling together 82 days into that campaign. unfortunately he lost his life. the coalition he was pulling together is the coalition that essentially re-elected president obama minus the working class white folks who have broken more towards the conservative side. one of the things that happened was the industrial complex and how it gets politicized between working folk and democrats, have made some of the whites break to the conservatives. and the policy has been signed to bl
