james holmes recalled barely holding it together. jurors listened to holmes talking on camera to dr. william reid, a court-appointed psychiatrist. reid was evaluating if holmes was legally sane, whether he knew the difference between right and wrong when he murder 12 people. holmes told reid he has always been a loner. >> reporter: holmes said having to talk to people often made his mind wander. >> reporter: holmes talked to read in july of 2014, two years after the movie shootings. by then, he was taking antipsychotic medication and antidepressants. he admitted to a hatred of mankind and that he sometimes saw himself as mentally ill. >> reporter: holmes also admitted he was paranoid, for instance charlie walking into that movie theater he thought he was under surveillance by the f.b.i. and hoped he was because then agents would stop him. >> rose: we know more tonight about the case of dennis hastert, the former house speaker, charged with violating banking laws and lying to the f.b.i. about why he made a series of large cash withdrawals. according to the indictment, after half hastert left the house in 2007, he was paying hush

reid reporting for us in baltimore. chip, thanks very much. in another case today, a veteran cop cried as he recalled the movie theater massacre in aurora, colorado defendant james holmes is on trial for murdering 12 people and wounding 70 others. he has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. mark strassmann is following the case. >> reporter: officer justin grizzle was one of the first cops to step into the carnage of theater 9. bodies lay everywhere. he went from one to the next looking for survivors. >> of course, the one that i'll always remember is the little girl. >> reporter: six-year-old veronica moser-sullivan lay lifeless on the floor. >> had to step over her because i knew she was gone. and continue on. which is absolutely the hardest thing i had to do, but going back on my training, i had to save the ones that i knew i could try to save. >> people are running out of the theater and are shot. >> reporter: grizzle's cruiser became a makeshift ambulance. a young man rode up front, a bandaged wrapped around his head wound, in the backseat, another cop held the man's girlfriend. ashley moser was critically wounded and unconscious, shot in the face and
