joining us now is former nay tor supreme allied commander retired admiral james stavridis.u for being with us. what does this tell you, the targeted raids into gaza trying to prepare the territory perhaps for the full ground invasion? >> yes, unfolding according to to plan, if you will, and that means continuously probing into this city-sized area, population a million or so. i credit the israelis for giving time despite the frustrations and the dangers of civilians leaving, believe me, it is better for them to leave gaza city, get to the south. gaza is a small place, but there is room to extract yourself from this city, get to the south. i think over time we'll see humanitarian aid flow into that region, hopefully egypt will open camps in the sinai. that's all in the future. at the moment, andrea, watch for israel to continue to do as much targeting as it can, go after ammunition, go after fuel, go after command and control nodes, if you will, prepare the battlefield and behind it, i think we're going to see that ground campaign begin within 24 hours. >> how do you lead th

. >>> let's bring in former nato -- admiral james stavridis. thanks for being with us.ian casualties in gaza are mounting. the humanitarian situation is increasingly more and more dire. if israel invades this ground incursion we've been talking about, this could all get enworse. what are the stakes for israel at this moment? >> enormous. the good news for israel is i see no scenario in which there is an existential threat for israel. it is not yom kippur war, it's not 1967, but israel's economy, its standing in the world, its diplomatic relations are going to be hinged upon the degree to which the israeli military can minimize civilian casualties when -- and i think it's inevitable, when they go into gaza, ana, and back to the humanitarian piece. i think the israelis are well aware how important it is to get that aid flowing as well. that helps their narrative as they move civilians out of the north part of gaza where they intend to go in, but they also need to work with the egyptians to get that aid flowing north from egypt as soon as possible. >> saying that the major

as well as former supreme allied commander, five-star admiral james stavridis.reign relations. good to have you all with us on this important monday morning. admiral, let's start with you. just your reaction to what unfolded over the weekend and, in particular, the government of israel and its intelligence and military, seeing some of the best in the world, their mission is to prevent exactly this from happening. how do you think they got so caught off guard? >> well, first and foremost, it is a sense in the country that things were okay, that they could, as they called it, kind of mow the lawn, mow the grass in gaza, go in and out. i think there was something of a place of complacency, to be honest. look, israel is going to spend years pulling this one apart, and it really is comparable in an intelligence sense, in my view, to the failure of 9/11, and the numbers here are really staggering. again, you have to remember, israel has a population of 9 million, 10 million total. u.s. is 35 times larger. so when you see 1,000 killed, think 35,000. when you see 2,000,

joining us now, former supreme allied commander of nato, retired four star navy admiral james stavridisle policy institute yakov katz. jonathan lemire, mike barnicle and katty kay are with us as well. >> admiral, were you leading israel and the israeli army, what would you be doing right now? what would the strategy be? >> this is not entirely theoretical. as you know, joe, i spent four years at u.s. european command and i was in charge of u.s./israeli military-to-military relations. good friends with general benny gantz. happy to see him go into the government. i would never presume to stand up and direct israeli forces, but i'll give you my sense of what they are trying to do. number one, avoid collateral damage, avoid killing innocent civilians. in all my experiences with the idf, i've seen them place that at the absolute top of their mission set. that's job one. job two, i think, is to try to find and rescue the hostages. that gets us to number three. why have they not started the ground assault? i agree with our reporting, which says they are ready to go. it's a very complex operat

bash, former staff at the pentagon and cia is here with us in washington and retired admiral james stavridis, nbc news analyst. good morning to both of you. admiral, if you were the military commander, hundreds of thousands of troops amased at the border with gaza, what would be the strategy be going into this very difficult battle theater? >> yeah. no secrets here. you're watching it unfold. you're seeing the initial rounds of precision-guided munitions that are taking out command and control networks. you're cutting off electricity, power, so that the terrorists can't access their own networks. and right behind them would be a major ground assault. tens of thousands, if not 100,000 israeli troops. give you a sense of scale, in afghanistan, i commanded 150,000 troops. that was operating across afghanistan, the size of texas. this is a tiny little enclave. there may be 100,000 israeli troops about to head in there. last point, special forces. israelis very good at this. they'll be trying to fix, find, protect those hostages. that's the basic sequence we'll see over the next 72 hours. >> and
