so the thread is jamestown. that is where it starts. in 1519, 12 years later, the first african americans arrive at jamestown. they are not slaves yet. they are for the most part in gentry servants -- indentured servants. slavery will begin a little bit later. a lot of people wonder why did it take so long for slavery to end. well, slavery was in existence from us 200 years when robert e. lee is born in 1807. which is rather remarkable. and slavery will end in about four short -- well, long years at the end of the civil war. let's talk about ira aldridge. ira was not a slave. he was a free black. he was born in downtown manhattan, new york city in 1807. along with ira aldridge, robert e. lee is going to shatter aldrich -- shadow aldridge. ira aldridge, free black. not many opportunities for free blacks. were of the biggest challenges was to stay out of the hands of kidnappers to be taken back into slavery. ira would go to the free black school in downtown manhattan. that is where he becomes introduced to the performing arts and theater.

that led to the relocation of the capital from jamestown to williamsburg in 1699. nathaniel bacon felt ill in the fall of 1676 before the british were able to suppress the movement in 1677. bacon was a newcomer to virginia. he was wealthy but a newcomer. he was not considered part of the elite 200. there were also newcomers who had come this way and former indentured servants trying to establish their own way along the western front. bacon was able to gather a lot of support. in 1676, he is noted as having between 1200 and 2500 men in support of his cause. he led the largest uprising to date against the governor. moving forward, the landed gentry is concerned there would be similar uprisings. in a preventative measure, they start to separate servants quarters based on race. either identifying them as european or african. some historians have attributed bacon's rebellion as the cause for the encouragement of race-based slavery. the room we are in now has been based from the 1711 inventory from arthur allen ii after he passed. probate inventory notes all the pieces o

i would compare it in american history to some of the grizzly details of the jamestown settlement inere was at jamestown, but, you know, there were people who were literally starving at times as they tried to develop crops, as they tried to -- you know, the bull tongue plow, for example, didn't exist in brazil, so they were trying to make their own, trying to clear fields for crops and so forth and a lot of time their land grants were in very remote places. so even if you successfully grew something, it was very difficult to get it to a place where it could be taken by rail to rio de janeiro to be in a the roads were really bad. they're still really bad in brazil in rural brazil. so i'm going to read -- the next thing i'm going to do is read a brief description from a typical confederados. this is a person who visited awd]Ñ confederados. he was a civil war veteran from tennessee and these were the living circumstances of this veteran in brazil who is trying to make a go of at it a a farm mer ch the farm eers home is sichsed a fu mills distance in the large clearing at the forrest at
