when the first english settlers came to jamestown, they hoped to find the same kind of supplies of gold found by the spaniards. there was a bitter disappointment in not finding gold in what is now virginia. they brought with them jewelers and goldsmiths. america's first gold rush took place to where we are now in georgia in 1829. this was the georgia goldrush in north georgia. 100 miles north to the town of don monica, you can see the old lumpkin county courthouse has been converted into a gold-mining museum. it is about 100 miles up the road. what happened was, first gold was discovered, then people started pouring into the area in huge numbers because of the intoxicating possibility that gold would make them wealthy quickly. until then, this had been an area beyond the line of settlement. suddenly the white settlement catches up quickly. here is the governor, describing what it was like meeting the georgia minors in 1829. i want to let you know we have advisories all the way from syracuse, jamestown, and into erie, pennsylvania. this lake effect snow event is one of a couple we're going to be seeing this week. let's talk about maine right now. your winter storm warning continues. so we're still watching out for dangerous conditions. travel not advised for northern vermont and northern new hampshire and snow totals are still coming in. we've already seen 20 inches in some parts of maine, just mind boggling. early snow and then the lake effect snow comes in and those bands will be intense, so we could see several inches plus as it comes through. then by tomorrow the new clip is coming in over the great lakes and that will bring light snowfall accumulation, but on top of what we're already seeing. over the west, rain for california, los angeles getting wet, san diego, and arizona, plenty of moisture for phoenix and tucson. we'll watch for that and mountain snow at the higher elevations. what you can expect, not too much in l.a., quarter inch, but further inland, half inch of rain. keep in mind we're looking at

gil in jamestown, -- jamestown, north carolina, a democrat. caller: the gentleman who just called in, he was referencing the declaration of independence. having said that, the founding fathers, george washington, james madison, monroe, and jefferson, they were all slaveholders. consequently, if you look at -- the first article on the bill of rights of section eight, it states that militias were to be formed to suppress insurrection. all the founding fathers were slave owners and they were extremely afraid because of what slave revolt.the they were all afraid of a slave insurrection. having said that, that is why in the bill of rights we have militias. militias were organized in the states to hopefully prevent the so-called insurrections by enslaved people. let's talk about history and history as it is. my favorite amendment to the constitution, if you bear with me briefly, the first amendment and of course as stated by some of the previous callers, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment which respectively abolish slavery, gave us little rights --
