jamestown. we talked to graham woodlief, descendent of the group's leader, captain john woodlief, about how these colonists celebrated the first english thanksgiving in america. later, archaeologists marquart and describes his current project, looking for artifacts from the settlement to determine is exact location. graham: hi, my name is graham woodlief and i'm president of the virginia thanksgiving festival, an organization devoted to the history of the first thanksgiving. in america which was here at berkeley plantation. this journey began in the spring of 1618 when four gentleman met in london to form the berkeley company. their names were william throckmorton, john smith, george thorpe, and richard berkeley. who owned berkeley castle in england. they met in london because as i said they had been given a grant of over 8000 acres to start a settlement and to bring profits back to england. at that point in the early 17th century, england was going through a severe recession. poverty was rampan

so jamestown was spared. captain woodlief was spared. he was in england at the time and his family was in jamestown. captain woodlief eventually settled at scion hill across the james river from where the settlement was in what is known as jordan point today in hopewell, virginia. how did we find out about this? well, in 1931, the president of the college william & mary and the son of john tyler came across papers at the new york public library known as the nibley papers and they chronicled the journey across the atlantic and once they landed. dr. tyler was excited to find this as he lived on the james river and close to the berkeley plantation. he wrote an article in the richmond news leader in 1931 about his find and i think this is the first time people really realized that the first thanksgiving happened in virginia and not in massachusetts as many people believed. so he wrote his article and then told his neighbor who was mack jamieson at the time who owned berkeley plantation about his discovery and years later in 1958 the jamieson

so, jamestown was spared, he was graham woodlief, in england at the time and his family was in jamestown. the captain eventually settle across the river in what is known as a jordan point today. in 1931, dr. lion tyler, president of the college of william and mary, son of john tyler, came across the papers at the new york public library and the chronicle the journey across the atlantic from once they landed. , asas excited to find this he lived on the james river close of the berkeley plantation. he wrote an article in 1931 about what he found. he wrote his article and then he told his neighbor about his 1958,ery and years later, the jamison family invited the woodlief family to the plantation to celebrate the historic event that had happened on their land. the family started meeting in 1958 and three years later opened it to the public. today as we celebrate thanksgiving festival that has ,een held for the last 57 years it actually re-creates the first thanksgiving when the landing occurred and a lot of other colonial games and things take place, but the main purpose is we have been ree

jamestown is wrapped up with the finding of america. you found america. you begin america with the pilgrims. that is how you can build into history of all these turning points that allow you to move chronologically but assert origins at different moments. i told you before i was going to give away my example. 1643. does anybody remember now what at -- what did that confederacy is? so important that everybody remembered it? this turning point in history? the 1643 confederacy? what happened in 1643? we talked about two weeks ago. who united? who came together? student: wasn't it like some of the new england colonies to fight against the native americans? prof. van engen: yes. four new england colonies come together, uniting for common defense. this becomes one of the key turning points because it is a moment of union between the colonies prefiguring a much broader union of colonies, coming in 1776. people are celebrating 1643 in the 19th century. today, we do not remember it at all. this is how we think about public memory, cultural memory changing over tim

everybody thinks of jamestown as the beginning of the united states. that was 1607. a spanish explorer came out of mexico and wandered through this area, he didn't say. -- stay. he was able to record what he saw. we had explorers all the way from 1600. we are not, we may be one of the newest states that we are not the newest explored part of north america. i would like to point out that before mr. mcculloch got here and build his town, we had miners wandering around out here. minds time, there were 45 es in the mountains behind us. some were not productive at all. we have a lot of artifacts here. this is a box of, where you would store your dynamite. people had these little tobacco tins. why are these laying around and why are they in a stack of stones? if you were a minor and filed a claim, you had to have the claim papers posted on the claim. it weren't a lot of trees. they would make a karen. put a tobacco tin in it with papers saying, this is my claim, you can't have it. we've had the luck of finding some of these in the hills behind us. primarily, we are after g

and in 1907 when the 300th anniversary of the founding of jamestown was being celebrated, president theer rooseveodor oversaw the celebrations. and during these celebrations pocahontas once again is put forward as not only the savior but a founderes. she's made to resemble nothing less than lady liberty. she is the chesapeake pay and she looks westward over the entire country. now in 1924, something very interesting happens in virginia, and that is that the state of virginia is passing racial seg braci segregation laws. they are looking to pass an act called "the racial integrity act." this act is intended to safeguard, quote, the pureness of the white race by banning interracial marriages. so the act requires that every birth of a child born in the state of virginia is registered, and at that time that the child's race is also registered. now, the child can be classified either as "colored" or "white." okay? the legislation is intended to help virginia ban, prohibit and even punish interracial marriages, and this law actually is also designed to legislate american indians out of existen

congressman, neal ryan all those years ago to try to rescue constituents essentially being held hostage by jamestown. tell me what your book is about. >> the book is coming on the 40th anniversary of that horrific experience where over 900 people lost their lives. where a cult leader was allowed to operate both in the united states and in guyana, and he was doing all kinds of horrible things. sexual abuse, physical abuse, mind control. and we went down to find out and indeed we found out that people were being held against their will. they followed with a tractor trailer and shot the congressman fo 45 times. i was shot five times. i was left for dead on that strip for 22 hours and was able to rebuild my life. it took months, many operations and the book is about not just that but about all the traumas and experiences that i have had in my life. my husband was killed in an automobile accident when i was pregnant with my second child. failed adoption, sexual abuse. i was resilient. and this is how you turn heartache into hope. grieving into healing. i want this to be a book of personal survivor book.
