she was a young girl when, when the jamestown colony was founded in 1607.like the pilgrims who would come later, the english were ill prepared to survive in the new land that they had come too. and really had to depend on the generosity of the local indians to survive their first few winters. so pocahontas, we all know the story i think we all know the story of how pocahontas befriended john smith in some versions of the story she was john smith's lover. which is gross she was 11 years old when she met john smith. but at some point her father is going to execute john smith. but pocahontas cast herself over john smith's body and saved him from being executed by her father. well, that's a good story, right? that is a cool story. and it makes for great myth. so much so virginians to this day love to trace their ancestry back to pocahontas. so at this point of course there are thousands of people with at least some credibility connect themselves to pocahontas and her offspring john rolfe. it probably did not happen. in fact it almost certainly didn't happen. jo
