abc2 news jamie costello joins us with the latest. >> the national weather service said about a dozen tornadoes hit the area yesterday. today we're hearing amazing stories of survival. some homes were destroyed while others were still standing. >> oh, wow. oh mi goodness. >> according to the national weather service more than a dozen tornadoes pummeled the area. >> please take shelter immediately. >> reporter: a news helicopter captured one twister's fury. >> look, look, look, huge trailers, these huge rigs, the back ends of tractor-trailers are being thrown hundreds of yards. >> reporter: but tornadoes tore through neighborhoods, lifting roofs off buildings. more than 650 homes were damaged. yet, there are stories of survival. he hid into this storage space a grandmother is being hailed as a hero. she saved her three grandchildren by seeking shelter into a bathtub, even holding on to her grandson as the wind tried to rip him from her arms. >> i grasped him harder. >> tonight the national weather service is investigating how the tornadoes, which appeared to flatten some homes and graz

jamie costello joins us with a shift in policy. >> reporter: he as really frustrated tonight feeling that harford county is spinning its wheels when it comes to your safety a bill before the county council would have established a commission this that would make recommendations concerning fire and rescue, but some felt this was the step to have a paid career fire department and they didn't like it. county executive craig said that was never the intention. >> during the 30 years i've been here, i can't say that it has -- how we improve the public safety. the desire of amendments that keep changing day after day, woke after week resulted in my decision last friday to withdraw the bill and come up with a new solution. the status quo is not acceptable. >> he yanked it. mr. craig said this advisory board should not lab threat to anyone and anyimposing such a commission is not reacting in the interest of public safety. mr. craig will go to plan b and tell us about it later this week. jamie costello, abc2 news. >> a deadly accident claimed the lives of three generations of a new york family

jamie costello joins us with more on the trayvon martin case. >> reporter: much of the focus is on two, the 911 of screams heard. some say it is not george zimmerman's voice. the other is the videotape police say was taken the night zimmerman shot and killed martin. now it's been in hands of forensic companies. tend shows the wounds on martin's head. >> if the injury did occur on the night in question, it does corroborate, obviously, mr. zimmerman's story, but you have further witnesses. obviously, you have medical service emergency services personnel who treated him at the scene who can corroborate he had fresh injuries. >> reporter: meanwhile, trayvon martin's parents called on the justice department to have the attorney investigate. reporting for abc2 news. >>> some new evidence in the case of missing mom susan powell. it seems to link her husband josh to her disapeerchlts powell killed -- disaperns -- disappearance. powell killed himself and his children. police found a gas can, tarps and a shovel in his car and found susan's cell phone. susan also kept a secret safe deposit box wi
