. >> jamie mcintire, the white house is reluctant. what kind of weapons does ukraine want from the u.s? >> a whole lot of things, secure communications, and the kinds of things that the pentagon and the white house are considering are things that they referred to as defensive lethal weapons things like for instance antitank missiles that could take out russian tanks. russia has been putting a lot of tanks into eastern ukraine. also something called counter battery radar which has the ability to track incoming rockets and mortar rounds and redirect fire back at the source of those things. and also antiaircraft systems that could perhaps neutralize some of these small drones or unmanned military vehicles that the russian backed troops are using in order to gain surveillance and intelligence. there is a range of things that the united states is considering providing ukraine so they could essentially bolster their defenses. >> would these defensive weapons give ukrainian government enough to counter the russians? >> president obama touche

to washington now for reaction, jamie mcintire joins us. how close are you to u.s. officials to confirming the death of kayla miller? >> well, john frankly not very close, unless i.s.i.l. produces some more proof of its claims which you said the u.s. is very skeptical of. usually when there's a complaint of unintended civilian casualties from an air strike the u.s. central command launches an investigation. obviously this is not something they can do in this case. what i can tell you though is that in this -- there were air strikes in the area where i.s.i.l. claims that kayla mueller was killed and they were led by jordanian f-16s flanked by u.s. f-18s. there were no hostages held at this storage facility, weapons storage facility that was targeted so there is some speculation that if kayla mueller is dead that she may have been brought to the site just before the strikes or that she might have been killed elsewhere and then brought there as part of i.s.i.l.'s propaganda campaign. >> so is this news having any impact on jordan's request for more arms to fight i.s.i.

jamie mcintire, it's been the claim of ukraine that they can't win a war with blankets and things like that. >> the pentagon has been watching with great frustration as russia has continued to pour hundreds of pieces of equipment including p-72 tanks into eastern ukraine and the forces that are backing the government are outmatched on the palt field and that has given a new impetus to the idea that defensive weapons to the ukrainian forces but there has been no decision made yet. >> what kind of weaponry are we talking about here? >> well, you know, one of the things as i said that the ukrainian forces are facing are these russian tanks. they have nothing that can stop a tank. they can really use some u.s. tow 18th tank missiles to stop these tanks in their traction. that is supposedly a defensive weapon but any weapon can become an offensive weapon too. the united states and military advisors at the pentagon are weary of pouring more arms into this race essentially fueling a proxy war between the united states and russia on the battlefield of korean. >> we've just heard from germany t

jamie mcintire is with us from washington. jamie, did the pentagon give away any big secrets? how much do we know about this operation? >> tony, dozens of reporters crammed into the small office, while the u.s. central command briefed them on the battle against i.s.i.l. in iraq and syria. the pentagon believes no tactical information was given away but the conops, concept of operations how five iraqi brigades would be mounting an assault in april to may time frame, although that could slip and that three kurdish peshmerga brigades would also pin in the fighters by block in supply routes and routes of escape in the east. it was much more information than we were given and the things they talked about were obvious to anyone who was paying attention. >> i think we're getting all too fixated on mosul. yes, it's important terrain yes, it's going to have to be retain. everybody recognizes that. >> so there have been a lot of statements from the pentagon and other officials in recent months about the coming offensive in mosul. so the pentagon doesn't consider that it really gave away
