. >> for more now we're joined on the phone by jamie richards a park ranger at yosemite. and jamie, the closure obviously a big financial hit for yosemite. talk with us about just how much of a toll it took especially coming right at the height of the summer tourism season. >> reporter: the ferguson fire has certainly been a challenging incident for us and we are starting to see life come back to the valley and we are starting to see things get back to a sense of normalcy around here. but for about 6 weeks, you know, parts of the park were closed. and we have had several challenges. we know that it's disrupted a lot of people's vacation plans and we want to remind everyone, now is a great time to try to come back if you can. >> how many potential visitors to yosemite did you believe canceled their trips over the past several weeks? >> well, we see thousands of visitors every day. and it's unclear to see how many people ended up having to cancel versus how many people are going to just try to come back at a later date. a lot of our visitors are local in the gateways. they a

park...the fire has forced the iconic tourist site to close indefinitely during peak season...jamie richards / park ranger: while anticipated, we certainly hoped it wouldn't happen like this....crews have been able to contain the ferguson fire at 38 percent. and two weeks to the day - the fatal carr fire in shasta county has claimed it's seventh victim over the weekend when a pacific gas and electric worker died while trying to restore power.the carr fire has grown to 164 thousand acres and destroyed more than 1 thousand buildings. tom bosenko, shasta county sheriff: "this has been the largest and most destructive fire in shasta county history." all this wreckage has forced california to call on fire crews from more than a dozen states and now from abroad...flying in fire fighters from australia and new zealand into redding on monday.sot: they have had a lot of success setting up the containment lines and then backburning, which means removing the fuel away from the head of the fire.the carr fire is 47% contained. thousands of firefighters are putting in long hours some in triple-digit heat,

while the area's reopened, jamie richards says some food and lodging services are still unavailable, and the highway 41 entrance into the valley is still impacted by fire activity. >> the wawona road from just north of wawona to the wawona tunnel is closed. it will remain closed. i don't have a timeline yet on when we're going reopen that. >> along with visit, to mariposa community also celebrated the reopening of both the valley floor and highway 1406789 since the fire started, the city's businesses have taken a hit during what is usually their busiest season. county officials say they're applying for some loans in hopes of helping businesses stay afloat. >> we're going to claim economic injury with the closure of the park for over a month. it is ten times worse than it was last year. >> but mariposa business owners are hoping to see some revenue soon. meanwhile, yosemite range sayers they're just glad visitors can once again enjoy the sights and wildlife from inside the national park. park rangers say that there are still fire crews and fire activity inside the national park so the
