jamil. and also a week of a cease fire giving hamas over the last seven days or so a chance to come up for air, reorganize. and look, they have we're watching live photos there in gaza city of a hamas militant taking the stage. looked like they were maybe signing something. what do you think was happening there? >> yeah, that's hard to know. i do. i do imagine that hamas is going to use this opportunity as a propaganda victory to say, look, look at these israelis handing over 50 of our, of our of our toughest guys, 30 of them life sentences for each, for each female soldier. and you know, the hard part about these trades and these have happened many times over the years. the most one of the most famous ones back in the day, gilad shalit, you know, and you see these large handovers of prisoners. the hamas knows that by taking hostages and by kidnaping israelis, they can gain back a lot of their people. it creates all the wrong incentives. and yet it's hard to it's, you know, when you think ab

let's bring in our next guest here, jamil.e, jamil jaffer, national security institute founder and executive director. i would like to ask you, based on everything i told you about his military background, what does that tell you potentially about how this guy was turned into a potential extremist? >> well, it's really hard to know. this is a man who served in the u.s. military for 13 years in total, eight years active duty, including a tour in afghanistan come another five years as a reservist. primarily as an hr specialist, and i.t. specialist, but he still was military training and a staff sergeant at the end of his service, a number of awards come as you just laid out. that doesn't describe somebody who you typically think of as a jihadist, someone who have an isis flag attached to his truck and drive into a crowd in new orleans. at the same time we have seen this before. we have seen a military officer, previously in the attack down in the south there. it was radicalized online, following some jihads, so we have seen it h

that we have not fully gotten out of this stage, that terrorism is a threat, an important one. >> jamil, what do we need to have on our radar with all of that in mind? >> well, look, obviously we should be looking at the big upcoming events. we've got a presidential inauguration on january 20th, the sugar bowl tomorrow now delayed from today. the super bowl coming up, but also the swearing in of a new congress, a lot of things going on in the united states where terrorists could take action, inspire people inspired by al qaeda or i.s.i.s.. al qaeda remains a threat as well. and remember, as seth points out, we've been very active against i.s.i.s.. we've killed three of their top leaders in the last five years, including on december 20th. as seth was saying, we killed abu yusuf, also known as al, who also was a senior i.s.i.s. leader, and having taken him out, that could also inspire somebody or could push them to try and press somebody who they were trying to inspire to actually take action. now that's a concern as well. >> yeah, we need to be on higher alert for sure. seth. jameel, tha

>> well, first, i mean, i agree with jamil. one of the things that you that is really needs to be understood here is that you have so many factors in play. and and by the way, even when i was in government during the israeli-palestinian peace process, under under president obama, and in general, when you have cease fire negotiations, they are always tenuous, but they are especially tenuous with a terrorist organization and one like hamas that never negotiates in good faith. you can't believe a word they're going to say, and they have their own goals. and what's important about their goals right now is that they have all of their backers right now on the fence. iran is on the defense. hezbollah is decapitated. now. president assad has flown like a coward from from syria and gone to moscow. and so without its backers, hamas cannot exist. and it's going to grasp at every straw it can to stay in power. so when you've got that mixed with the domestic policies and issues you have in israel and netanyahu, he should know better than to

jamil jaffer. and we will catch up with dean struyven. higher bond is begin to constrain risk assets. priya misra writing rates have risen a lot and it will be a problem for risk if their tenure gets closer to 5%. this has been a real rate lead move which is a problem. i think we are near the peak. good morning. happy new year. let's start with the real rate move. what do you mean by that and why is that so important? >> i think it is useful to decompose the tenure. if i'm getting paid more, i get paid more for things. i can pay a higher mortgage rate. if real rates go up, that is when we talk about his monetary policy restrictive. i look at real rates. this entire move has been a real rate driven move. since the fed started to cut rates or since last year, real rates have risen by almost 100 basis points. 10-year treasury yield is up. that just tells you if they're trying to reduce the restrictiveness, they did not succeed on that front. maybe the economy does not need -- i do think equilibrium high rate is -- it is not here. the economy

again, jamil, this scene that you see, the soldiers there with arms. a process that so far seems to be going rather smoothly. what are your thoughts as you're watching this unfold? >> well, you know, look, 15 months of battle has, i think, worn down both sides. and i think patience has worn thin in israel with getting the hostages back. obviously, what happened on october 7th was atrocious. it's the equivalent of a dozen nine over 11 attacks on a population adjusted basis. so if you think of what we in the united states went through on nine over 11 and then multiply that by 12 and you have a sense of what the israeli population went through. but even more than that, if you if you if you hear about what happened on that day and you read the accounts and you go visit those sites, i had a chance to do about a month ago. it's really just the barbarity and the depravity of what these terrorists did to, to young women and men and the people they kidnaped and the way they treated them in those moments was is just appalling. and so you you have this real sense

and jamil, there's renewed concern whether copycats or not, that there are going to be more of these tech i.s.i.s. or al qaeda inspired lone wolf terrorist attacks with simple things like a car or maybe something that's very easy to get in the united states, a gun. what can the trump administration and what can state and local authorities do to try to get ahead of it? >> look, it's a really tough problem when you've got people who are committed to attacking others, willing to give up their own lives to do it and do it in a low tech way where they're killing a relatively small number of 15. >> anyone innocent dead is too many, 15 dead is terrible, right? but if you're conducting these types of attacks, it's very hard to combat. >> now, the ways you can go around, get around it is one try to identify these people ahead of time. >> that means surveillance, right? that means identifying these people. we have a lone wolf authority that used to be in law expired four years ago. >> congress failed to reauthorize it. >> we have section 702 that allows us to identify foreigners located overse
