jana katsuyama is live now in san francisco to tell us what this big day on wall street means to the average joe, jana. >> reporter: well julie just one look at the ticker behind me and you can see stock after stock that ended up today. the dow jones is an average of just 35. but for people who are looking at their retirement funds and investments it is a hopeful sign. the markets rise today gave investors a taste of the optimism back in 2007 when the dow surpassed the 14,000 mark five times. >> i hope it's fantastic news. i hope it's a good sign right. >> reporter: the market rise is lifting spirits, people relieved to finally see their investments grow. after the dow dropped as well as 6,600 in 2009. >> it's a good sign. it's continued to go up so no complaints there. >> we're moving in the right direction and compared to a lot of other countries i think we're in a good position. >> reporter: manufacturing and auto sales are being credited for pushing the dow higher. a job's report shows that while unemployment rose, 157,000 jobs were added in january. >> i think there are definitel

jana katsuyama tells us this incident has left students unnerved. >>> police say the attack happened on the north end of campus just east of several lecture halls on science hill along a wooded trail. today we found santa cruz police investigators going over the site. a young woman was visiting the campus and she was walking along just before 10:30 when the attacker beat and raped her. >> the victim did not know the assailant and it happened in the middle of the day. so that's shocking for the campus and quite unusual. >> reporter: students received an e-mail alert. many say the wooded trails are often used to get around campus. >> this is really shocking i didn't ever think anything like this would actually happen. >> part of it is there's no direct path to get from one part to another so that's why we have a will the of these trails that go through the woods. so that's how you get places. >> reporter: police say the victim was taken to dominican hospital. she describes the suspect as a white man 30 to 40 years old, 5'11", 200 pounds green eyes a too ta on the rite bicept and a -- g
