jane: an suv bursts into flames. this whole episode is caught on videotape as neighbors rushed to rescue the mother and two little kids inside. jon: the battle over health-care reform shifts into high gear this week. republicans are coming out swinging, stepping up their criticism of the president's plan, calling it a risky and costly experiment. what many democrats outside of the cabal know that voters will not stand for these prescriptions for health care or for ourselves. jon: democrats are pushing ahead to passions -- to pass a bill sooner rather than later. that is mike emanuel live of the white house. the chairman of the republican party is coming out pretty strong against the administration's health reform push. what else did he have to say? >> calling on americans to call the white house and call their members of congress to basically fled their phone lines in the coming days. he also passed, mr. president, what is the rush? >> congress is trying to do this in the next two weeks. they want to get a bill done

jane: it is funny.ou start looking at your plant little differently than you did a couple weeks ago. why is this book is unsustainable, as they say? >> there are two main problems. a larger number of uninsured in the u.s., and the cost of health care raspberry sharply. there are about 46 million americans, and they lack health insurance, with people going to the emergency room to get treatment or going without care, facing high medical expense. the government is also spending money on taking care of programs like medicare, the single biggest threat the deficit right now. in order to rain that in, they need to make changes to the system. jane: republicans and democrats -- to the at this point agree on anything? we will put on points of agreement that you mentioned. >> one is that elected system reoriented to emphasize prevention and wellness, start paying doctors and hospitals for the quality of care they provide instead of just the treatment. another area is that it would like insurance companies to sto

actor john and jane. >>jane: thank you.hat made big headlines a couple of months ago. outbreaks of swine flu are causing some camps to close quickly or causing campers to go home early. it never really went away, i guess it is affecting these camps? >> it is. at least 50 camps in 20 states had had outbreaks of swine flu this summer. some have decided to close because so many staffers and counselors have become ill, especially special needs kids. both of these organizations the decided that it was not worth the risk, they canceled their summer programs. keep in mind, these organizations cater to children that have chronic medical conditions that leave them vulnerable to swine flu. >> are any of the camps taking extra precautions? >> the center for disease control has issued special guidelines encouraging them to have contingency plans in place and staffers on hand to know when and how an isolated child shows signs of having the flu, stressing good hygiene as well, stressing them to cough into their elbow, we visited a summer

jane: breaking news out of miami. police are searching for three gunmen who opened fire on a house fire earlier this morning. 12 people were hurt. three of the victims are said to be in critical condition. another person running for safety from the gunfire was hit by a car. witnesses say at least one of these gunmen came in wearing a black trenchcoat. this all happened in miami. investigators are trying to figure out the motive here. rick: new urgency to the search for a serial killer terrorizing people in the town of gaffney, south carolina. more than 100 law enforcement officers are now on this case. a reward for any information leading to the killer is now at $20,000. our investigators finding that thery are any closer to finding this man? >> if all of the traffic in and out of the police department is any indication, they're doing everything they can. they say that tips continued to flow in. they are trying to follow up on all of the tips. right now, the town is in fear. there's a general sense of uneasiness and u

jane: we can hear it. have you got the rundown as far as you know as what this memorial flashes going to look like? >> we understand that there will be performances, and it is expected to be a different scene. given the fact that there are a lot of people here who love michael jackson, we expect them to be there. the hope is that there will be a celebration here. he does have three children, and we expect them here in the next year of your hours or so. so those kids lost a father and while everyone here is thinking they lost in music icon, there are a lot of fans, it is a lot deeper for a lot of other people. and of course, for those three children. jon: thank you for giving us a preview. the term fluid was used, a term that security people do not like. the secret service has everything nailed down, and with grieving and distraught people and people were really angry that they cannot be inside the center, fluid is not a term i would want to be hearing if i were chief bratton. >> and he is a very controllin

how about that, jane? you know, michael jackson, he's been all over the world, lived all over the world. is it possible, do you think, that perhaps in this case if he was in fact taking diprivan he may have gotten it somewhere else? >> absolutely. remember, he went on three world tours that were extensive world tours. and dr. arnie klein said on "larry king live" last night that he was aware that michael jackson was those tours while he was in germany with an anesthesiologist. now, what's absolutely fascinating here is that we're hearing from the "l.a. times" that the l.a. county coroner's office has subpoenaed the medical records of a number of doctors, and they are even looking for radiology and psychiatric records. i would have to think that that wouldn't necessarily be limited to los angeles, or perhaps even the united states. i don't know whether you can subpoena somebody who's in a foreign country. but i would think if you wanted to get around the restrictions, you would go to a foreign country, espe

want to get right to them with my colleague jane velez-mitchell, host of "issues with jane velez-mitchell" jane, you've got dr. conrad murray obviously on the table. you've got timelines to talk about, what paramedics went through. let's start there. i had a chance to talk to cnn's randi kaye about -- she talked with a fire captain about what paramedics saw. first thing that stands out after the 32-second phone call. took them another three minutes to get there. so already four minutes gone right there that when they arrive michael jackson no pulse, not breathe. >> not only that. he admits through his attorneys, dr. murray, that he waited a half an hour before he called paramedics. if you add it all up and you include the 42 minutes that they spent working on him at the house, it's something like an hour and 17 minutes that they're working on somebody, and through most of that, at least what we know from when the paramedics arrived, he doesn't have a pulse, he's not breathing. so at what point do you declare somebody dead? and does politics have anything to do with that? in other words, i

jane, what do you make of this?>> well, i think these circumstances can be very troublesome for a star like mel gibson. essentially because he's had scandal and trouble in the past, it opens a pandora's box, and it really invites others to be rather aggressive with him. according to the reports that i've read, a photographer/reporter was trying to get a shot of mel gibson and his girlfriend and couldn't get it, and so handed the camera to somebody else, sort of an average joe, who ended up trying to take the shot, and that's when the problems occurred. so i think that we have to really understand how aggressive some of these paparazzi can be and realize how would we behave in the same situation? i'm not excusing it. dui. decisions. think police are questioning specifically some of the things that this particular man who went to the police and said his shirt was ripped by mel gibson, they're questioning that account, and they say witnesses have a different version of that. >> yeah. it sounds like from what i'm readin

let's go to jane velez-mitchell on that. jane, and you and i have talked about this.someone close to him needed to step up and love him and help him even if he wanted to try to push it away. there are so many stories out there, jane. can you help us get a clear picture? >> it's the dance of addiction, mike. and as a recovering alcoholic myself, with 14 years of sobriety, i'm very well aware of all the nuances. you have the addict and you have the enablers, the ones who cover up and facilitate. that's an addiction in itself. it's called co-dependency. and co-dependency can be extremely strong when you're dealing with superstars because they have so much charisma that it actually supercharges the co-dependency, where these people will do and say anything for this godlike figure and they will go into deep denial. i mean, we've had, one of the trainers, talking nationally about, well, i never saw any track marks or needle marks on his arm but in the same breath he's saying, well, you know, he did work out with long sleeves and a jacket. who the heck works out with long sl
